Side effects of St. John's wort

St. John's wort has become the herb of choice for combatting depression. People who are taking it should be prepared for two known side effects:

  • sensitivity to light both to the skin and to the eyes
  • itchy skin

The sensitivity to light is particularly serious for fair-skinned people. If you feel an aversion to the herb or to any other herb, it would be advisable to discontinue its use. Your body is trying to tell you something. Listen to it.

If itchy skin is a problem, an application of vitamin A and/or zinc may relieve it. Again, discontinuance may be called for. The herb may not be for you.
