I find it awful. Once knew someone who not only salted watermelon, but peaches as well. Disgusting.

No salt for me please. I know a lot of people love to salt their fruit but I've actually never even tried it! I like my fruit without salt and I don't see any reason to be ADDing salt to my diet so it's best for me to go on in blissful ignorance. I don't need to try it and find out I like it!

I've tried it an "No, Thank You!" I don't care for salted melon any more than I like sugared tomato slices (ick).

My mom salted and peppered cantaloupe growing up..and salted watermelon...

I'll eat it either way...but prefer unadulterated melon..

But melons and feta..are a yummy mouthful...

I do think that melons can definitely handle saltiness.

No salt for me on any melons. Some people like prosciutto on melons, but I don't like that either. I like sweet fruit to be sweet and not salty.

Yesterday we barbequed some chicken thighs, and so we added some corn on the cobb to the grill as well. I put no salt (or pepper) on my corn, and I also put no butter. The corn was very sweet, and the salt would have destroyed my appreciation of the sweetness. I think people are just used to having food taste salty, but it's one of the reasons I do not eat out very often - restaurant food is very frequently too salty for me to enjoy.

I can go either way too but usually only resort to salting one when I make a mistake and pick one without a lot of flavor. ometimes a bit of salt is the only thing that will make a melon that wasn't quite ripe worth eating at all.

I agree with Terri that salt and melons do go together... to me it explains why we love Melon with Proscuitto!

I do cantalope sometimes but that's it. Oh, I do salt and pepper pineapple before grilling it. Rep pepper flakes if there are no wimps eating it.

Nope, I don't salt any fruit, not even melons. My Grandmother used to salt apples, though, I didn't like that either.

I do like salt on corn, and lots of pepper but I'm happy without butter if the corn is fresh and sweet.

I've salted watermelon before, when it had very little flavor. But for the most part, no salt for me. Can't imagine it on a cantaloupe. NancyLouise

I prefer to put lime juice on fruit that most people salt. A friend of mine likes to eat green mangoes, and I think she might put salt on them.

My family always put salt on cantaloupe, but no one does now. I like to put powdered sugar on grapefruit and a little sugar on peaches. I like peaches without sugar, too.

Use to salt it when I was a kid. Can't imagine doing it now. However, watermelon salad is delicious and I think what makes it so is salty peanuts and feta. A great combo of flavors.

I do salt melon...especially if it's very sweet. I like the sweet/salty contrast.

No salt here. I remember seeing my husband salt a watermelon once and I was shocked. Never heard of it before. He doesn't do it anymore though. (But he does sugar his tomatoes, which I find yucky too)
But hey, nothng wrong with it if it's what someone likes.
I guess, though, if someone salted mine before serving me I would be shocked. Although, I have often been served ice tea with sugar, which I don't like either, so maybe it is just what people know and they don't think about others having disparate tastes. Interesting thread. I wonder if the salt thing is regional?

I've never heard of anyone doing that. Though, I love a starter made with melon, parma ham and a honey vinaigrette.

I didn't grow up salting any kind of fruit, though I know many people do. I suppose it is the flavor contrast that people enjoy. Or, as one friend who salted his watermelon claimed...the salt draws out the juice.

I do eat certain fruits with lime juice and hot chili powder at times, as I learned to do from a chef I worked with. He was from Mexico and that was apparently the way he learned to eat cucumbers, melons, and oranges. Very tasty, actually.

I can eat salted watermelon but prefer it not salted. Rachelellen, that made me LOL.. how much more juice could you want than a watermelon produces automatically? Funny, but I love watermelon and honeydew but never did like cantaloupe.

Barnmom, I would be annoyed if someone salted my melon before handing it over too. Smiles. At least ask.

I like salt on a lot of things but not on melon. I think it's more of a southern thing. If someone salted my melon I would probably have to whiz in their beer.

While I prefer my melons salted, I try not to salt because of BP problem! To me the salt tends to bring out the flavor. I would never presume to salt anyone elses melon! I am talking a sprinkle of salt not alot. To each his own.

I love Kosher salt flakes on watermelon and cantelope. I love salt on green apples or crab apples. Just small pinches - not too much.

I love a tiny bit of salt on a Beef Steak tomato. But I do not salt the Sun Golds that I mailed you. To me they have the most perfect balance of sugar and tartness!

My mom used to salt it and thus we grew up salting ours too. I haven't since I've been an adult though. When I think back about childhood dining, I think my mother and grandmother served everything either with salt or sugar - tomatoes, melons, cottage cheese I remember with salt but we also had tomatoes and cottage cheese with sugar - and lettuce with sugar, butter sandwiches with sugar, peanut butter sandwiches with sugar and so on and so on and so on.

Mmmm... butter sandwich with sugar!

I'm a salt-a-holic but NO salt on my melon. Tomatoes have to be cooked and salted... no sugar. Sometimes sugar on the grapefruit... but only if it is handy.

I've been buying chocolate candy bars that have salt in them... and hot pepper. Yucky... bad for you... don't buy them... you won't like them. ; )

I have only seen one person salt a melon and I thought it was wierd. It honor of this thread I just went and got out the bowl of cantalope and salted a piece.

Yuck!!! Not for me thank you. It probably didn't help that the canatlope is so sweet it almost tastes like candy. The salt just did not work for me. I will give it another try on a piece of fruit one day that is not perfectly ripe and see how I like it.

I must have lots of salt on my watermelon. I also salt green apples and like it okay on grapefruit. I used to salt cantaloupe, but do not know.

I only salt melon if it tastes like cucumber.

In India you can buy cucumbers from street vendors who will slice them lengthways and add salt and chilli powder. Very nice and quite refreshing.

I used to eat butter and sugar sandwiches when I was at overnight camp as a kid. We'd be starving by meal time and the tables would be set with bread, butter, sugar, salt and pepper before the meal was served. We couldn't wait for the meal so we made sandwiches of the butter and sugar. Not bad!

Growing up on a farm in the upper mid-west,
we salted cantelope, watetmelon, & apples.
Along with any vegetable we ate raw, which was most of them.

When I moved to Texas, no one seemed to have heard of salting any kind of fruit.
I got a lot of strange looks when I salted mine.
Over 40 years ago I was put on a low sodium diet.
It took awhile, but in time I learned to eat melons & apples without the salt.

And sugar sandwiches were common where I grew up, too.
A brown sugar sandwich was a special treat.
They seem to be unheard of here, too.

Except in my house! ;>)

No salt here on any melon, apples, nor tomatoes. I didn't grow up with it so never gave it a thought & since we lowered our salt intake in the early 80s we've become sensitive so I'm sure neither of us would like salted melon now. My Mom did put sugar on grapefruit but not for the kids. I haven't eaten grapefruit in many years 'cause of medication but DH peels grapefruit & eats just like an orange. I've never heard of a 'sugar sandwich'?

Yes, we ate sugar sandwiches too, sometimes made of cold pancakes left from breakfast, spread with butter and sprinkled with sugar. I still do that with a cold pancake once in a while!

I remember salting watermelon as a child in Ohio, but haven't done that since then.

Powdered ginger is good on cantaloupe. No salt, please.
