Flood irrigated lots are a rare find these days. You will be able to grow many things that struggle in our salty soils but keep in mind that Salt River Project can cut your annual alloation of water if the reservoirs run low as they did in 2004 and 2005 when deliveries were reduced by 25 percent. This can be stressful for some trees and plants. Palo Verdes do not tolerate lawn situations or flood irrigation. Acacia will grow in lawns but I may not be happy under flood. Here are some choices that should appreciate the extra water but could handle a dry spell now and then. Honey Mesquite - look for the 'Maverick' clone which is thornless. Chinese Pistache - great fall color. Chitalpa - seedless cross between a Desert Willow and Catalpa. Light pink flowers all summer that attract hummingbirds. Desert Willow - blooms all summer with large fragrant flowers that attract hummingbirds. Lots of color choices. Sissoo (Dalbergia sissoo) - bright green leaves, semievergreen, frost tender when young - be sure to cover on cold nights. Arizona Ash (Fraxinus velutina) - an Arizona native that provides great shade. Citrus - all varieties Pine - Afghan, Aleppo, Canary Island or Stone Mexican Elderberry (Sambuscus mexicana) fragrant flowers in spring, berries in summer/fall. Southern Live Oak or Cork Oak Peach or Apricot Olive Bald Cypress I hope this helps.

Where I'm at in Seattle, I'm out of the flood and Lahar areas and we usually do not get the wind like some parts of the state - nor do we lose power very often (and when we do, it's rarely out for more than an hour) We RARELY have snow storms like some parts of the country (last winter was one - 3 day - storm in about 10 years) I can do without the hurricane excitement and I'm glad I live here and not in Florida - especially when I can come in after working out in the garden to have hot apple pie fresh out of the oven. BTW, I raise WONDERFUL figs in Seattle (outside year round) and I raise plenty of pineapples and bananas (inside) ... Working on the star fruit. Nice to have cooler weather - with a greenhouse, there is MUCH more that can be raised here than in warmer climates (just about everything from the warmer climate AND a whole lot more!)

Hi chris... welcome to the fig world. I grow many figs in ground in Bethlehem, pa. You have choose a perfect spot to planting it. usually it needs to be planted against a wall in a southern exposure where it gets as much sun as possible. I'm not sure how large your tree is at the moment, but i'm guessing it's probably around 2 feet tall. It may grow another 2 feet. There are many ways to protect it in winter. What I normally do with young fig trees is bending them to the ground and cover it with mulch, you can also put a tarp and cover it with mulch. you should have no problem. There are many nurseries that label the tree as Brown Turkey, but it may not be one. Good Luck.

Even if you got most of the thick roots the thin roots are lost, those are the ones that actually absorb water. I would have been much better if you waited a little bit longer actually and moved them when they were dormant, because the leaves draw more water than the disturbed roots can provide. The soft green stems and leaves are used to getting much more water so they are wilting. I would go ahead and clip all the leaves and hope for the best. Maybe you could leave a few at the top and see if the trees can handle keeping them happy. Leaving them all on you risk the whole plant drying out, the tree wants to drop those leaves but it takes time and it might dry out first. That is probably why the others died.
