Ammonia from cloth diaper stained my hardwood - any way to fix it
Comments (1)It's not clear why there would be ammonia in a cloth diaper... or whether the damage is in the finish, the wood fibers below the finish, or both. Ammonia darkening can sometimes be bleached out with oxalic acid. Dissolve the crystals, brush onto the entire surface (not just the stain, because it may lighten the area). When the bleaching is complete, sponge off the bleach with a solution of baking soda and water (to neutralize the acid). If it's urine in the diaper and you're assuming the ammonia comes from that, realize that it may be impossible to fix; professionals usually remove and replace urine-stained boards, at least for pet stains. Even sanding through often won't remove them....See MoreOpinions please on darkening stain(pics)
Comments (2)What beautiful views you have outside your windows! We're also working on our forever house in Santa Fe and our windows look a lot like yours... About the poly'd windows. I faced the same problem a couple of weeks ago as a fellow helping us poly'ed a french door while we were away that only had 1 coat of stain on it, instead of 2. Did not look good. Here's what I did, that worked perfectly. I scuff sanded the poly pretty energetically with a maroon Scotch-Brite pad (which is equivalent to 320 grit sandpaper). The pads IMHO work much better on stain and poly than regular sandpaper or steel wool, giving a significant more even scuff or smoothing. And you can reuse them by washing and drying them, although they get thinner with use. I bought a box of 6" discs online. The scuffing was to give the poly "teeth" so that it would hold another coat of stain. I then painted on the second stain coat. I use Zar Salem Maple, a rich brown-y color with orangey highlights. The thing about the Zar is that it is *thick* and highly pigmented, and can be used as a top-lying glaze as well as a regular penetrating stain. Over poly, you want a stain that will do the glaze thing, as nothing more will penetrate the wood. You could also try a gel stain. MinWax gels are easy to get, but depending on how urgent your work is I suggest also going on line to the Lawrence-McFadden company. They have the most beautiful gel stains, in fact stain colors period, that I've ever seen. I'm using the Candleight color, which is very close to the Zar Salem Maple, but gives more pigment per coat. One coat of Candelight equals 2 coats of Zar, in my experience and less time spent is a good thing! Depending on the weather when I've used the Zar as a glaze I've also added some japan drier (according to the can instructions) as a top-sitting coat of this thicker oil stain can take up to 2 to 3 days to dry otherwise. I don't need to do this in the winter with the house heat on. You might experiment. After it's dry, I buff again very lightly with the maroon or even finer grey Scotch-brite, and poly. A final very light and quick buff to remove any dust nibs, etc, and that's it. You'd never know that it wasn't done all at once. If you're changing stain color, remember that it's like hair color--the existing color will affect the final result as stains are fundamentally transparent, unlike paints. For poly on doors and windows I've started using a waterborne floor poly, Mega from Bona. It's very low sheen satin-y, and one coat does it for me. It dries in 10 minutes. Comments (6)2-1 sounds good. Thanks! I typically try to work in odd numbers but was having a problem seeing the overall picture since I had so many pieces about. DH said he didn't care if I painted the bookcase. Thanks Franksmom! I'm hoping that the wall color won't be too dark for her tree mural. I don't want to go too dark on the leaves. That bureau looks totally different from when I bought it for $10 or $15 7yrs ago. It was burnt orange w/ big wooden knobs. I bought new glass knobs and glued on the 2 wooden decals. DH found small wheels at his shop and put those on for me to raise the height to a more comfortable changing table height for us. Jerseygirl - well you know the adult rocker needs to have the seat reupholstered and I've been going back and forth between cream or blue. Maybe a print w/ both colors? Her curtains are a natural muslin color w/ pom pom trim and her bedding is almost he same color as the wall w/ a brown toile print and a cream matelasse quilt. Soft pink sheets. Bumblebeez - that is an excellent point about focal points and I didn't want to take away from the bureau by adding too many painted pieces....See MoreDarkening finish on furniture
Comments (10)Thank you lukkiirish! Polyshades is a stain and polyurethane in one. Unlike regular Minwax, or any regular stain for that matter, it is intended to be used on finished wood. The lightest of sanding is all that is necessary just to provide a key for the stain to adhere to. The color is Bombay Mahogany, satin finish. I think the secret to success is following the instruction to apply only a thin coat at a time. I have used gel stain too but I don't like the way it looks when the sunlight hits it - you can see every brushstroke! Perhaps I should have taken even more care when applying it? The stools have been in daily use for 3 or 4 years now and apart from a chip on one arm that I need to touch up, the finish is holding up really well. I don't know if I would have the courage to tackle kitchen cabinets though! I suppose if it wasn't successful you would then HAVE to paint them :-)...See MoreUser
