testosterone cream and libido

Years ago when I was suffering an acute loss of libido my doctor put me on testosterone injections into my buttock muscle. This caused me to become acutely sexual - wow I was so horny a few days later!! for a period of about a week then my libido slowly reduced until I needed another injection. Per coincidence at that time I developed a stomach ulcer from heliobactor pylori bug and I wondered if the steroid effect could have upset my immune system. I believe the methyl testosterone which is what is in the injection is not a good form and not the same as the natural testosterone. I now take natural testosterone cream and find it much more even - I don't get the high's and the lows. My clitorus has remained the proper size whereas before the injections it had shrunk to the size of a match head. No I don't feel horny all the time but I also feel a sense of well being. Lack of testosterone in some women can cause depression. I can usually achieve orgasm. Good luck.

I am curious about which "natural" testosterone cream you are on? Is this prescription only?

Testosterone is only available by prescription. Anything non-prescription is, at best, something that works by a different mechanism altogether and at worst pure snake oil.

"Natural" testosterone is the designation for the bioidentical, as opposed to synthetic (that methytestosterone), version. I do wish it had a better name, since the use of "natural" in a hormone context is so non-standard and confusing. This designation does however, according to my compounding pharmacist, convey the correct variety in a prescription.

Judy, my experience with it is similar to yours. While the cream didn't turn me into the sex fiend of my husband's wildest fantasies, it did tune my overall sense of wellbeing and energy up a notch that had been missing on just estrogen and progesterone. I find it also has a positive impact on vaginal lubrication and elasticity.

I don't know or really care if it's a placebo effect of taking Arginmax or not, but the clinical trial data that had been reported in the media is what led me to try it. I noticed NO change in my low libido at the time I posted Jul 6th. When I posted again on the 31st and thought backward, all I could remember was that for the previous 3 weeks, my libido had kicked in again. No, it is not raging and I'm not attacking DH when the sun goes down, but am able to respond and/or initiate now on a weekly basis when there wasn't a glimmer of a chance of that happening before. I ran out of Arginmax for approx 5 days before buying more, and this weekend (when we have more free time) will tell me if that lapse has made any difference. Recommended dosage is high--6 tablets/day. I followed that the first 2 wks or so, 3 in the am/3 in the pm, then dropped back to 3/day as I was beginning to doubt the PR but at the same time didn't want to run out too soon before I'd given it at least a month. Was about ready to give up when I discovered renewed desire. I'm not saying it will work for anyone else; just that for now, it's working for me. If it's all in my head, I don't even care.

The idea is that progesterone is the raw building material for a number of hormones, one of which is testosterone. In peri-menopause, our testosterone production drops dramatically. Testosterone is one of the key hormones influencing libido (but not the only thing involved in sexual response). Some of us can compensate for its decline; others cannot. The situation is worsened by taking estrogen, in a way, in that estrogen increases levels of a protein that binds testosterone. When you have fully-functional ovaries, these things balance out: you make enough testosterone to still have enough left after the protein gloms its share. When your ovarian production goes down, as in menopause, and you take HRT that contains estrogen, you are in effect hitting the testosterone with a double whammy: lower output and the protein to skim off what you do have. By adding progesterone, some women find they are able to manufacture enough testosterone again to regain their libido. Others, in whom the libido loss is due to some other problem, may not find progesterone helpful in that regard (although it may or may not be in other ways). Generally speaking, there's no way to tell whether it will help or not without trying it. But oral progesterone should work for this as well as the cream does. There are women for whom oral progesterone is ineffective--either because they do not absorb it or they too readily get rid of it--and for them, a trial of the cream form may be useful to see if it's route-related. The main difference between oral and cream seems to be that the oral route produces more sedating metabolites; otherwise, they should work the same way.

Bi-est and progesterone cream

About a 1 1/2 months ago my doctor increased my bi-est cream to 2.4 (2 clicks in the am and 2 clicks in the pm), progesterone pills (200 mg) 1 at night remained the same. I was also taking DHEA 10 mgs in the am. My DHEA level was extreemly high. All other levels were within normal range. My hair started thining, weight gain in the stomach/hips and internal itching from scalp to legs. Took a saliva test and doctor took me off the DHEA. Hair still looks thin, itching has continued and the weight has not come off. (side note - I exercise 4 to 5 times per week). Went to see a dermatologist. He said hair loss has stopped even though my hair still looks thin and he gave me pills for the itching. I believe the hair loss/thinning, weight gain and most of all the itching is due to the bi-est. I have only had one ovary removed. Can you shed some light as my doctor is not listening to me. Monica

I was given testosterone troche from my compounding pharmacist. I have taken them for a month. No change. My GYN says my levels are normal.
I keep saying it's stress and tension but, I had stress and tension before my hysterectomy and still had a normal libido.

Testosterone may be the cure for some ladies, but I believe it is only a small percentage. When I went to my doctor for libido problems my blood test showed that my testosterone levels were actually at the upper limit of the range. I am convinced that a number of hormones contribute to libido and that it is a fine balance. But the current popular notion is that testosterone determines sexual desire so that's what they're pushing. As for me, I am so tired of hearing my husband say that older women are suppose to have higher sex drives that I could scream.

Peak is I think in early to mid 30's.
That's when I re-married of course and now DH looks at me and says "(Sigh), I miss our 30's." There there, go to sleep like a good boy.

Well girls guess what I called my gyne(a man) and he said lack of libidio is from "a low self image not hormone related" He however started me on(not sure of the spellong) femhart.Has anyone heard of that? I told him its not a self image issue and I never had a problem till my menses ended.
I am so angry with him.It was like he couldn't see what an issue this is with me.He sort of blew it off is how I felt.I won't be going back to him but will seek a female gyne who i hope is more sympathetic and helpful with my problem. I mentioned testosterone and he didn't even address it.So what do you think.Also what is in the progesterone cream you all talk about.I had been on Premarin vaginal cream and could not see it was doing anything.I appreciate your input.
