Looking for old thread with pics of island sinks...

There was a thread showing main sinks in islands.

Not sure if it was about the faucets or the sinks, but it was

full of photos of everyones island sinks.

I have not been able to locate it in search...

can anyone help? Thanks.

Not sure where this thread is, but I would really like to see pictures of islands with the main sink, too.

Just signed on for the first time in a few weeks...way too busy lately! Finally found a few extra minutes to update my "Intriguing stuff" post about Aunt Alice and the picture of her fiance, the locket, etc...But, then I saw this thread, and got sidetracked! What a pleasant surprise to learn I insprired it. (Thanks Alisande-Love that pic of your grandfather!) I love this stuff, and I'm glad to see that other people do also. I especially love old family photos that contain a picture of something that has been handed down through the generations-like Lorin's great grandmother and the vase...love it! Found another one of my own like that...In trying to solve the Aunt Alice mystery, I was going through some more old family photos. I found a picture of my grandparents, and a bunch of other relatives, in front of the fireplace in my grandparents home. On the mantel, is a pair of Brass CandleSticks that were made my great grandfather. The picture was taken in the 1930's, and I think the candlesticks would have been made around 1865-1885. I have the candlesticks. I've not had any success scanning pic's with my all in one printer. Quality just not good. Any tips on that, Linda? Dee.

Lav: you're gonna have to change your name to GreenLass if you don't watch out! Those are pretty nifty fridges, arent' they? Actually looking at an Electrolux Icon french door CD. Hey, I was perusing the Cabinet Authority website (great, user friendly site BTW) and they have a beautiful buttercream finish with a white glaze that I thought was just lovely. Here is the link to the page. I thought you might approve :) BL: Thanks for the input, muchly appreciated! I could probably go with plain shelves that that cab... just putting my lobster pot and a couple other tall pots. Don't have to go after them very often, that's true. Someone said not to go wider than 36" on deep drawer bases, so that's why I left it that size. Will the floor of the drawers be safe at that width? I will need a 42" base for the sink, yes. The clearance under the sink (best I can tell) would be an 11" wide area on the left and just over a 13" space on the right. I could def. mount a couple pull outs on the floor of the cabinet for something or other. I will make sure of clearances for the pantry. Really want to squeeze at least an 18" wide door on the pantry to the right of the fridge. That pantry will be like a 'blind cabinet', extending behind the side of the 15" deep pantry on the east (fireplace) wall. So the space showing for the door will be approx 21" wide. I was thinking right side hinges with a 2" clearance on that side and an inch next to the fridge? I thought in that 'hidden recess' area I'd have 15" shelves and then leave the rest open for brooms, mops, probably recycling etc. The 15" deep pantry on the FP wall: I'd like to have drawers but I don't know if that would be useful to have such shallow depth drawers? Maybe someone has them out there in GW land and can weigh in? I'd have just fixed 15" shelves in the upper part then. Yeah, I know the top of the fridge is unusually gross and greasy. Probably should have doors there but I was thinking it would be a good place to show off my father's giant wooden Ceasar salad bowl. The thing is about 2 feet around so it doesn't fit on any normal shelf! As for cabs: I'm really liking pics of cabinets made with fir. Also, just found a painted finish that I mentioned above to Lavender. That's all still out there as of yet. Thanks for all your ideas and time BL! Here is a link that might be useful:

Ya'll are awesome! bebetokids, THANKS for not making me feel like an idiot!! I knew I saw that! And I'm glad to hear what the end result was...my computer has been down for hours, or I'd have posted sooner. The thing is, I have my grandmother's dining room furniture (from the '50s) and it has kind of a green-y or celery cast to it...and upholstered chairs (that are heavy beyond belief). The turquoise color chips look amazing behind it. I also need to paint a ceiling to go with...I love my DR light fixture and the ceiling is vaulted...currently, there is the dreaded wallpaper to take down (ugh) and I'm having brick pavers put down next week to go with the rest of the rooms (PO had put in some really bad laminate...it's chipped in so many places...just hate it!). All of this before the wedding in Dec. Am I pulling my hair out? don't answer that..but I do need your help...thank you...ttodd, lovely pics..

Picture Thread: Kitchens That Won't Look Silly In 20 Years

So, in these pictures I'm seeing three possible paths to KTWLS. First, kitchens that are explicitly and authentically ''period''. In 2010 and 2030 alike, a vintage 1920's period kitchen will look like a vintage 1920's period kitchen. It hasn't been ''in style'' for 90 years, it isn't pretending to be in style, and it can no more go out of style than the historical waxwork dioramas in the Museum of Natural History. Second, kitchens that are well-executed eclecticism. It isn't of a specific era, doesn't have a specific look, is a collection of disparate elements which are each appealing and go together harmoniously. Even as one of those elements becomes over-exposed and then shades into silly, it's just one risible piece in a still-graceful whole. Third, and I suspect this will be controversial, kitchens that are very, very avant-garde. Tastes change slowly. Furniture of the ''Le Courbusier'', Mies Van De Rohr, Marcel Breuer sort - ''modernist'' if you will - that was so stylish in the 1950s and 1960s, was actually created in the 1920s and 1930s. It took decades for the Wassily chair to go from ultra-modern to mainstream. A very perceptive student of cutting-edge modern design might be able to shoot ahead of the bird, as they say, and build a kitchen that might actually look less silly in 20 years than it does today. Maybe. I wouldn't be able to do it. Well, I can see a final approach, which I think would work in theory for a very few people. Simply transplant a commercial kitchen, or as close as you can, into the house. I think a restaurant kitchen in 2030 will look much like a restaurant kitchen today, save perhaps for more induction, because they are designed for function, not fashion. You'll have a kitchen that is equally institutional and graceless in 20 years as today. I really like seeing the pictures. I hope they keep coming. I'm getting some ideas.

How long is your island, karina? Also, how deep is your overhang?

Does anyone have any pictures of a main sink island that's all one level -- or do these have to be 2 levels?

Mine is one level. It's a large island at 11'x 4 1/2'. We sit here for virtually every meal.

sarschlos--our island is 9 ft. long. The upper level is 24-25 in. deep. And no, these certainly don't have to be 2 level. There are plenty of good reasons to have all one level, which is why we had a tough time deciding. No regrets on our decision here though.

I am really sorry for hijacking this thread, but for the two people who posted photos - karina and lindybarts - where is your dishwasher in relation to your sink?

I noticed that you both have a double sink with the larger bowl on the left and the smaller on the right. It appears that your DW is probably to the right. How do you like this setup?

Also, how much counter space do you have to the left and right of the sink?

Building on anna's questions, does anyone have a main sink island that is less than 9 feet? We've got about 8 ft. X 5 ft. to work with. Will that be enough (this would be our prep space, seating area, and clean up space)?

I apologize for the quality of the following photos which I took at the cabinetmaker's showroom. I am going to have an island similar to the one in the photo with my main sink in the island.

The island in the photo has a prep sink only. There is a garbage pullout to the left of this sink and to the right of this sink is a DW and the side cabinet panel that covers the side of a wine fridge that is at the other end of the island.

Lindybarts, yours was the one I was remembering! Wow its a good size.
Sarschlos...I am trying to do all that too with even less space...maybe 90x42!

Mine is 100"x 38" and I have a single sink with dishwasher to the left and garbage pull out to the right. Plenty of room..

Anna_2006, sorry I missed your question the first time around.

I like the setup I have just fine. Typically what happens is dishes gather in the large side, then when I'm ready, I would rinse them one by one on the smaller side (that also has the disposal) and transfer them to the dishwasher to the right. Since I'm right handed, this works for me.

The sink is in the center of the island so there is exactly 55" on either side of the counter.

Karina, how do you like your Yellow River granite? I looked at some this weekend and found it to be gorgeous! Not what I expected I was going to pick out. I just wish it had a different name. Hate the association I have in my mind with it!

mustbnuts, we love our granite, despite the name! :0) It hides lots of sins and we've had no problems with any wine, lemon juice, etc. causing problems even when they sit a while. As with many granites, the photos don't do it justice! Good luck with your project!
