The fat hangs on for dear life!

Are we all having fun, ladies? The latest rollercoaster ride is gaining a few pounds without any effort and it looks more like 10 pounds than 3. Anyone have any suggestions for losing the fat round the upper body that hangs on for dear life? No matter how much weight I lose, there is NO CHANGE in that area. None!!! I've never liked diets, I prefer eating healthier and exercising. I lost 25 pounds, came very close to my ideal body weight, but no change in the upper body fat, especially around the chest and back! None!!! No sireee, it's still there like flies on honey. I'm considering trying the South Beach Diet because those I know who went the lo-carb route lost fat even in the most stubborn areas. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!!

I've been doing South Beach. I have lost 30 pounds, but not one inch off my waist. Go figure!

I hate dieting! I mean hate-hate-hate. Depriving myself of tasty food is torture. Wouldn't cutting back on portion size and exercising do more good than sticking to a rigid plan?

I think you have a Dracaena reflexa Song of India. It's definetly been overwatered, cut down on watering, put in a clay pot (if not already) and add some perlite to the soil for better drainage. Good luck, Jen

robin_d - Do you remember when McDonald's french fries were so good? They formerly used a small amount of beef fat in the shortening. I try to avoid junk food, but I would make an exception for those fries! I can only imagine how good they would be in all beef fat. We did get our half cow last year, and have enjoyed the meat very much. Unfortunately, my request for the fat and all the bones for stock was passed from me to DH to the butcher. The result was that I got the usual soup bones, but all the long bones and fat were disposed of. The butcher did tell DH that we could have all the bones we wanted any time, because most people don't want them. One of these days I'll take him up on the offer, and I'll ask for all that connective tissue as well. Since the butchers normally pay to get rid of these, I imagine other butchers would be glad to get rid of them as well. Fat is one thing that I don't like to store in plastic, as it absorbs molecules of plastic quite easily. I imagine this absorption no longer occurs once frozen, but would be even faster than normal when the fat is warm. I realize that this isn't a concern for most people! ".........When you buy beef to be butchered, you pay for the hanging weight of the side/whole/quarter on the hook after the obvious parts are disposed of. Hooves, head, etc., and it's sectioned. That's how our local butchers do it, anyway. It's your call within bounds what you want off it and how you want it since you have paid for it by the weight........" calliope - that's the system used around here as well. We also paid a slight fee for the wrapping, that was either based on the pound or the number of pieces wrapped - I forget which. One reason I didn't go back and get some fat from another cow was that I particularly wanted the healthier fat from a grass-fed animal. It occurs to me now that I can call up the farmer who sold us the cow and ask when they are taking another animal in to be butchered. Of course the 100 mile drive was also a factor! Fortunately there are some great German restaurants in the town where our butcher is located, so it makes a nice outing.

eloise, I call myself uglyfatslob, because that is exactly what I am. I'm disgusted with myself. Being fat wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the fact that I have such a huge upper body that must be carried around on two skinny legs. My older brother is also fat, not as fat as I am, about 5 ft 7 in and 580 pounds, but he looks younger than I do, although he is 10 years older, because he has a nice bushy head of hair, and his weight is more evenly distributed so he has a big fat butt, and short fat legs, big round hips, and his upper body is not quite as big as his lower body. He's more pear shaped. His health is better. He does not have type 2 diabetes as I do, and his blood pressure is normal, and his cholesterol is not too high, so his health is still good, but he says that he would like to lose some weight anyway. Compared to me, he is a lot better looking. In fact, he has a girl friend who is beautiful, and they plan to get married. She refers to my brother as a BHM, Big Handsome Man, or a BBM Big Beautiful Man, she's what you would call an FA, or Fat Admirer. Of course, even though he would like to lose some weight, he does seem to be a lot happier with himself, than I am with myself, and I'm thankful that he does not put me down because of my looks. He does not like it when I call myself ugly and disgusting. But the truth is, I am! He looks good in clothes. He does complain that he has to pay so damn much for a pair of pants, but he can wear his super large pants up around his waist, and his pants cover his big butt, and he can tuck in his shirts. So, although he's very fat, he can look really good in decent cloths. But for me, I can't wear anything worth a damn. I can't tuck my shirt in. My shirts won't cover my bellybutton, and I can't keep my pant up. My pant keep sliding half way down on my small butt, so I walk around exposing my bellybutton and butt crack. I look awful in clothes. My skinny legs are real hairy, I probably have more hair on my legs than I have on my head. My belly hang down over my lower groin, and I sweat a lot down there. I smell bad. Down below I give of a heavy, kind of sweet, musky body odor. PU!!! My love handles hang down over my narrow hips, and the fat on my lower beck goes out further than my small butt. I think I look ridicules with my arms being so much fatter than my skinny hairy legs. The only good thing that has happened to me, is that because of my head being bald on top, I look much older, so I can go into any liquor store to buy beer, and they don't ask me to show any ID because I do look old enough to buy beer, even though I'm only 18. I look older than 21 because of my bald head. So, when I'm feeling depressed, I just go into a liquor store to buy beer. I tried going into a bar to drink, but everybody there complained about my body odor and I was asked to leave. Yes, I am an ugly disgusting fat slob, and I hate myself. I wish I could be more like my older brother, even though is is also very fat, I would love to be like him because he is so much better looking, and in better health, and he does not smell bad like me!

Well, I'm the mother of a 6 yo girl and I am sometimes surprised by the things she says and does that seem very adult-like. Mine has been talking about getting married for 2+ years now (roll eyes). I think kids (especially at this age) tend to mirror other kids, and that can include a lot of older sibling behavior for 6 year olds (and not just your older DD, but perhaps behaviors taught to the 6 yo by her classmates who subsequently got it from their older siblings). Mine is an only and I see this pattern strongly-- like when she came home and announced, very matter of factly, that her friend doesn't associate with people of a certain color. Five year olds don't come up with that on their own, they get it from parents and older siblings. Of course, this was one of those situations where I asked her a few questions as to how she felt about it, and made sure she understood our values and that the other girl might be misguided (but she already had that figured out thankfully). 6 is also an age of narcissism, so I would not put too much bearing on her being caught up in her appearance and what other people think of her based on it. ALTHOUGH, I would definitely spend the next few years correcting her beliefs and continuing to communicate with her the values of "pretty is as pretty does" and that boys who are only interested in her for her appearance aren't much of anything themselves. It's a process, but that is the only way for your beliefs to make an impression is if she hears them consistently. It's especially important to keep on with it since we live in a society that is so caught up in outward appearance over inward virtue. Keep with your beliefs and give it time, and hopefully it will stick and she will outgrow this. You say she has a good relationship with her dad, which is very important, since how he treats her should eventually be reflected in the boys she chooses to associate with. I'd examine that relationship to make sure that her dad is encouraging her on a psychological and social level, and that he isn't inadvertently encouraging her need to be accepted by appearance. It is something he might do without even realizing it- if he consistently compliments her on how nice she looks after she gets herself dressed, but then fails to compliment her on her kind treatment of others, it could cause her to unconsciously value appearance over other things. It's easy to do this sort of thing with your kids and not realize it too. But again, 6 is an age of being strongly self-absorbed, and with some firm guidelines, boundaries, and positive encouragement on your part, I would hope she would naturally grow out of this and into a more rounded individual.

I have same problem with my waist - belly budda! I'm fairly trim, at 145-150 lbs., but my belly hangs on no matter what exercise I try to trim it. It looks like I'm in the 5th month of pregnancy. Life is so unfair.

I've read that we put on some belly fat (not a big roll hanging over your waistband) during perimenopause for estrogen storage, but I don't recall which books had that info. It made sense since so many women have that complaint, even those who are thin.

I had liposuction. It was horrid but worked a treat. I have since gained more weight, but the waist is still a waist. I weigh 14 pounds more than before the lipo but am in the same clothes and feel better with a more in proportion shape.

Well this makes sense, I was watching one of the morning shows recently, and it was pointed out that our ancestors were hunters/gatherers and their systems reacted to the lean times by packing on weight, to hold them over through the food scarcity. So, today, we have wayyyyyy too much temptation of food available to us, and we have to pretend we have 'lean times'.

No, the answer is not to deprive yourself of any of your favorites. Just eat less of them. Chew food slowly and savor. Eat half the meal portion you used to eat. You don't need much food to survive, and look, and more importantly, feel good. Get a hobby that excites and occupies your time without obsessing on it, and overdoing it. And drink more water, not diet drinks.

Please, please research and consider:
Suzanne Somer's food regime + the use of a good enzyme mixture supplement + the use of Alpha Lipoic Acid.
ALA can help the body regulate insulin. Please, please research these items.
Everyone laughs at the Somer's way of eating. It is serious and based on real research.
I wish you well! You need not starve!
Consider organic foods in order to avoid added hormones, anti-biotics and such. I had breast cancer.
All the added hormones to foods might have added to the increase in the occurence of BC.
Enzyme production decreasees as we age. You need them to digest the foods and use the nutrients.

As I've gone deeper into my 40s, it's been harder to keep that dang fat OFF. (I never even had a problem until around 40.) I've found that I must get exercise every day - intense cardio is the only thing that burns the fat for me - and I have had to work harder on portion control (I am a member of Weight Watchers online). I don't like it, but it's a fact.

I have found the same thing... just eat right and exercise my behind off, literally... the only thing to do. I feel better, helps regulate hormones and I look better.

I read an interesting book "The Pause", and in it explained what is happening during menopause...very interesting. One point was why we gain excess weight during this time. Apparently when estrogen isn't produced as regularly in our younger days estrogen is produced in the fat cells we buildup during menopause. Something like that...so I've decided since the extra 10 lbs isn't really hurting me physically I'm going to keep it but try not to gain anymore.
