I really like my local paint store. A real neighborhood type of place. I have spent quite a bit of time at the paint store and have purchased many color samples. The manager joked that he was "cutting me off" and stepping in to conduct an intervention. I have chosen the paint colors for most of the rooms in my house and I am pretty happy with the selections. Three rooms elude me; dining room, family room and kitchen - in other words the rooms we will spend the majority of our time. The house is a a stick style victorian and we had the original Queen Anne windows restored. The entry hall and the staircase wall are both painted in BM Manchester Tan. As you enter the house the dining room is straight ahead, the living room is to the right and the family room on the left. The kitchen is behind the family room but separated from the family living room by a hallway. O.K. - that is enough of background info. The living room will be Bleeker Beige (already primed with tinted primer). Wanted a warm but deeper beige for the family room. I was thinking of painting the dining room with RL Ambassador Sterling for a bit of zing. Finally, the kitchen has white cabinets with a black island. The counters are honed jet mist and the island is danby marble. Eek. Tearing my hair out - HELP!!!

Oh Curly, I can totally relate - It took me 10 months to pick a color for my FR. Once I finally picked a color, I realized I had spent MORE money in samples then the actual 5 gallons needed to paint the room. OH MY!!

Can easily happen. sometimes hiring a designer can help w/ that. No, I am not an interior designer. Just have thought about that sometimes for myself!

Thanks, everyone. At least I'm not crazy. Paintguy, I think you may be wrong about using the wrong quantity of colorant. Next time, I'll speak up if the sample doesn't match the chip. Faron, I had no idea that the BM sample pints weren't real paint. That's upsetting. I could understand that they'd use their cheapest line of paint for samples, but it should still be paint. Whose responsibility is it to calibrate the machines? Does the dealer have to pay to have this done? Do the manufacturers require their dealers to do this on a particular schedule? (It seems that they should.) C2 isn't an option for me. Their closest store is over an hour's drive each way. There are other BM dealers within range, though, as well as Sherwin-Williams and others. I would hate to stop buying paint from my local store because the people there are so nice, and I imagine that the store is just barely surviving, with so many big-box stores nearby. I'd hate to see it close.

I use the acrylic (?) cutting board daily as well as the narrow tray for storing sponges and what not. I have saved the walnut board as a nice piece for serving cheese and crackers. The reality is it is so pretty I don't want to see it get abused as a cutting board. It is also very heavy and not that practical for keeping over the sink where it would have to be moved for washing dishes! Like the other stages owners who have posted up to the board, I also do not use the ceramic mise en place bowls. though they are nice for serving snacks! they are too heavy and large to use in food preparation. I also had my contractor hack off the rack hooks on the bottom of sink so that my silverware drawer could go under the right side of the sink. i have no regrets getting the sink though - it is a fantastic size and I love having the slanted platform for preparing fish and meat

So I wanted to come back and post an update. To give you the background, I had my Raven counters installed on 12/20. The issues were the following: 1) White "specks" IN the stone which I was neither informed about nor were present in the samples I had seen. 2) Seaming at sink did not line up and had to be sanded down (see link) 3) Sink cut-out askew by about 1/8" making the sink look crooked. (It is not completely parallel to the counter edge - left side is 3 1/2" from the edge - right side is 3 5/8" from the edge, so out of alignment slightly.) The fabricator came out today to see the issues I had reported. 1) Regarding the specks, he just claimed they were part of the stone and acceptable/puposeful since they were all over vs. in one confined area. At no time did he mention resin pooling nor was he even familiar with that term when I brought it up. Makes me question how much he installs quartz products. He only could speak its advantages (non porous, scratch resistant, etc.) 2) After install there remained a bump where they tried to sand down the seam. He did more sanding and it is a bit better but still visible (to me). 3) He agreed that the cut-out was slightly off. He then spent a hr explaining to me the process of templating and that sometimes it is off slightly (but again, according to him, within an acceptable amount of variation). I asked him what my options were and after taking a bunch more measurements, said he could remove the stone and turn it slightly. But this, I pointed out, would create a gap at the back against the one wall. He did not offer to redo it with a new piece. Had that been the case I would have asked him to seam it in the corner. So where am I now? The GC agreed to come out and take a look on Monday, but I know will side with the fabricator that all of the above are trivial and that I'm unreasonable to want better workmanship. Granted, I have a very detailed eye and notice these things, especially in my own home. I've had a few friends look at my counters and didn't notice until I pointed out the issues. On the other hand, my folks were here over the holidays and dad picked up on the crooked sink. Maybe I am expecting too much. You can tell me! I can take it! Ha Ha! This is my first remodel and much more stressfull than I had imagined. I probably will just say the heck with it and hope that once the faucet, backsplash, doors/drawers are in I will not noticed it. @ Sophie The entire reason that cost plus contracts were born was to remove contractors from quality decisions. For example, when NASA wants to build a rocket, they want to ensure quality rather than that it can be done under budget. This is done by control of the bidding process from all subcontractors. This idea of quality control and it's side effect of cost control was perfect for capital investments by businesses and so shortly after WW2 they stole it. When used well, by parties who understand the ideas, it works well for home construction also. However, too many contractors want to use it as if it is essentially a fixed price contract without any risk to them. If you want to ensure quality, or protect supply house relationships, then use a fixed price bid. However, if you want to be largely indemnified from any loss by using a cost plus contract then you give up all rights to dictate quality. There are many far less complimentary words to call someone who takes advantage of the lack of knowledge and experience of their customers. I went with lazy, because I believe the reason most contractors do this is because they simply don't want to go through the effort of producing a fixed price bid, when they can do a serious bid for their money and rough estimates for everything else. @ Joseph Nothing in the original post makes me think they agreed at any time to use his recommended supplier. They even call it a recommended supplier rather than a required supplier. Just because they are agree to a standard cost plus (contractor's net cost, plus contractor's set fee) doesn't mean he gets to decide where his costs come from. That is the consumer's purview in a cost plus contract.

I don't mean this to sound negative, but you've picked two shades of beige and it's a crisis? Look at Farrow & Ball for rich neutrals, but to be honest--the original owners of the Queen Anne would have gone for something with more punch.

I patronize a variety of paint stores :-)

But I also find I can usually make a decision based on colour cards, plus I recently sprang for a fandeck of the paint whose palette I like best.

I also like actual colours, and would suggest that if the beiges are driving you nuts, there's a message in that.

I had to check out RL Ambassador Sterling. Can't find a room with it yet, but if you go here, scroll down to the 3rd pic, it's in the corner hutch. She says the interior is painted with AS. That's a nice color! I like the how the green in the wallpaper complements it. But if you've got white and black, you can see it with that, she's got white and black with it, too. Looks nice, very rich!

If you want to go with a variety of beiges, that could be a soothing spin on a monochromatic look. Beiges are hard, no doubt about it. Especially when trying to get two or more to play nicely together. ;) Much as I love most any color, beiges and yellows can just send me into a tailspin.

You can come to my house and get all the samples you want. My paint store owner did not cut me off. I must have every color on the chart! It was a 2 year process for me but I must say I am happy with all my colors.

Thanks so much Moonshadow. I do like the way the AS looks in the hutch and the color certainly works with my color scheme, or lack thereof, as ideefixe pointed out ). Thanks for finding the photo. I appreciate the understanding words about beige. As the song goes "it's not easy being beige". It was a lot easier for me to play with color in my boys bedrooms...

You said a mouthful moonshadow, of all the colors (so many it's crazy) I've used lately, I've had the most trouble with beige and yellow!

And yep, that RL AS just threw a wrench in my choice of a neutral ;-) Anybody know a similar SW color I could look up on my fan deck, LOL?

Manchester Tan and Bleeker Beige are my 2 favorites in my zillions of colors! Please take pics! I'd love to see them in a larger application than my little boards. I have several others I want to try, but the paint guy is starting to look at me like I'm crazy.... I figured out he isn't in on Mondays though, so I have to quickly sneak in and get the others on my list.... pretty sad....I know...

But, have you looked at Greenbrier Beige? It is even paired with Manchester Tan and Bleeker Beige on the charts. Another I think is beautiful with Manchester Tan and Bleeker Beige is Providence Olive, but it is more greenish tan.

I was actually considering Manchester Tan for all of the trim in my build --- and possibly even kitchen cabinets. I only eversee it as a wall color, but it looks warm and not too yellow, not too pink, I think it could be great. Sorry to go off topic, but I was so excited to see your post! Here are my recent samples....(to make you feel better..you're not alone :-)
