Grilling eggplant - what is your favorite way?

We will be grilling this week-end, and so while I was at Trader Joe's, I bought an eggplant, as it was cheaper than the ones I bought at the Farmers' Market and looked as good. I plan to do a simple grilling, but I have found conflicting recipes.

How thick do you cut it? I am planning on 1/2" to 3/4" and will have to do this with a serrated knife. I do not plan to peel it at all.

Do you simply brush it with olive oil, or olive oil with garlic?

Do you salt or brine it first? The NY Times recipe does not.

How do you garnish it? I am planning to use pesto, since I have some left over from the fettuccine I cooked on Wednesday. I also have some sun-dried tomatoes I might use.
