A Visit with Sherry

I had a great visit with Sherry (sheshebop) and her DH (Roger) last night. They like to come up my way each year with their camper. They had Dexter with them so Roxie was more than happy to have a visitor too. I had to work yesterday and they stopped in at the store, American Spoon, when they got here to say Hi! Well, mostly to say Hi, Sherry had to get some of the Cherry Butter we sell, she's addicted to it.

Our dinner started with Cherry Peach Salsa and Blue Corn Chips and I also sliced some Artesian Cheese that just won 'Best of Show' at a big cheese show out east. The cheese is a raclette that is made near Traverse City.

I made the Roasted Tomato Soup that Maggie posted.

I dribbled the cream on the soup rather than stirring it in.

Our dinner was grilled tenderloin with morels and a red wine reduction with shallots, roasted new baby white potatoes and a cauliflower (purple and gold) salad with dried cherries, bacon parm reg cheese and red onion.

We also had a peach bread with peach butter, new recipe for the bread, turned out really good.

Sherry made dessert using a new pan called a Mary Ann pan from King Arthur. It's a one layer cake pan the has an indent that you can fill, Sherry used lemon curd and topped it with fresh fruit. Really yummy!

I can't thank Sherry enough for the beautiful stoneware plate and matching bowl she brought, it is going to better perfect for appetisers and fits into my collection just perfect. She also brought us a jar of Chocolate Cherry sauce, I can't wait to try it.

One more thing........

for the upcoming trip to Gatlinburg, I think these are required!

Looks like a great visit! Nancy, that meal looks like it came from a restaurant, looks delicious! WOW!

The cherry peach salsa sounds nice, did you make that?

Sounds like a fabulous time, and the pups too, had a visit, so nice :)

WOW..WOW...WOW! Great pictures, of course that means the food is fabulous! The Cherry Peach Salsa sound wonderful and I will have to get a recipe for that.

Sherry is addicted to the Cherry Butter, well just about anyone that tastes it would be too! I used to spread cream cheese on a triscuit with a dab of Cherry Butter on top for a quick snack. YUM!

Gorgeous Cake and such a cool idea for a cake pan.

It's funny, Tiffy, my computer's been broken for several days, and just when I first post on this forum again, I see a post with my name on it - how nice! I kept my lunas in reptarian cages in my unheated guest room (I keep the vent closed and the door shut) and the temps in there vary from about ?45F-?65F degrees. They don't get wet of course, but then a cocoon already has all the water it needs in it - precipitation falling on it only increases the chance of dessication and death of it. I can't say for sure what you should do in Canada, since I'm unfamiliar with such cold temps, but if it were me, I'd keep it somewhere that's cold for as long as the winter up there lasts, but not freezing. I say as long as the winter lasts, because you wouldn't want yours to emerge before the trees have started to make growth, since they wouldn't have anything to lay eggs on or for the cats to eat. I imagine cold temps would prevent too early emergence. Maybe some northerners can give you better advice about how cold tolerant luna cocoons are - since they occur in Canada, they couldn't survive without being able to withstand hard freezes. Sherry

Wow! I haven't been here in ages and you did not forget me! Makes me feel good. Hello to all my friends, and thank you Pam for telling me about this thread. I think of you all a lot, but life is just so different for me now, and time is at a premium. I am still raising two little grandkids (for the last two years) and that is two full time jobs! I have lost 56 lbs on Weight Watchers, so try not to cook like I used to, but I still miss all the wonderful awesome recipes that I got from all of you. I will try to stop by now and then and say Hi. Susan, my experience with it has been wonderful! It isn't blooming now, but that's how it did last year. It begins to bloom when the temps start to fall (late September or sometime in October?) and continues to bloom until it gets hot - like 90 degrees or more in the day time - usually in early June. Its blooming peak, I'd say, is in late winter/early spring. Mine gets some dieback of its oldest limbs, which I cut off, but then it continues to make new branches from the trunk, which grow straight up to about ?9 feet or so. It makes a tall, wide bush, so the only drawback I can see is that it might not fit in a very small garden. The thing I LOVE about it is that it blooms in winter and is adored by hummingbirds! The ruby throats of spring, summer and fall (they arrive in mid-March and leave in mid-October here) visit it as much as they visit Salvia guaranitica, and that's saying something! Oddly, the butterflies rarely ever visit it. I had a rufous hummer that overwintered with me one year, and I've been looking for a winter blooming plant ever since. Orange Septre is also evergreen throughout the winter. I planted mine in a raised bed where it gets part sun/part shade. Everything does better with the benefit of some shade down here - full sun is too harsh in summer. I consider 'Orange Septre' to be one of my best plant 'discoveries'! :) Sherry

Okay, NOW I am intimidated. You all are going to have to teach me how to do such lovely presentations at PFPP. I am definitely not on par with you guys!

Nancy and Sherry, it looks wonderful!! Lucky Roger, he just puts up with all the chatter and this is his reward.

I'm glad that you have your Crocs, I was getting worried as we will be checking at the cabin door.

I have that same pan, I'm encouraged to use it more so now. I've only made Meyer Lemon cake with lemon curd filling. I am definitely outclassed by Sherry's version.

I'm glad you annual visit was so nice.

That dinner looks wonderful! And the cake, beautiful! I have pans from Duncan Hines from years ago. They are called Tiara, after the box mix made for it, which didn't last very long!. I have used it for black forest, or blueberries. I wonder if it is similar. Does anyone remember those?
And the bread, are you sharing? I bought the peaches to make the butter..can I freeze, or do I have to give all away quickly..I don't do caning...not yet!
And I just googled Tiarra cake pan...lots of info about them! But they are not Mary Ann pans...

I am home now. I had a fantastic time. I never get tired of my Michigan shoreline trip, and always love to stop and visit with Nancy and Kim. And nancy always FORCES me to eat supper with her, no matter how I try to convince her to have us all just go to the Olive Garden....NOT! Nancy is a fabulous cook, and her presentations are gorgeous. She and Kim are the ultimate hosts, and very, very good friends.
Nancy, thank you for your hospitality, the wonderful peach butter, and the fabulous meal. I can't wait to see you in Tennessee, and again next year at Lake Charlevoix.

Everything looks wonderful! Linda, I'm with you, presentation is a far second in priority for me, so I'm planning on just doing as I'm told at PFPP! LOL

Kathleen, here's the recipe for the peach bread.

Fresh Peach Bread

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 eggs
2 1/4 cups pureed peaches
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1 cup dried cherries
1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts

In a large mixing bowl, cream sugar and shortening until light. Add eggs and beat well. Add peach puree and dry ingredients. Blend well. Stir in almond vanilla, dried cherries and chopped pecans and until blended. Pour into two greased and floured 9x5-inch loaf pans.

Bake at 325Â° for 55 minutes to 1 hour, or until a wooden pick or cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Let bread cool for 5 minutes before removing from pan. Cool completely on wire racks
Makes 2 loaves or peach bread.

No recipe for the Cherry Peach Salsa, that was from American Spoon.

May, Linda...we are on vacation at PFPP. We will be lucky to get anything on the table :P

Guess I'm done posting pic's until I get a new camera. I was looking for Petoskey stones in Lake Michigan yesterday... the camera went for a swim....I think the inside of the camera got fried. I tried it this morning and there's nothing showing up on the screen :((

Nancy, that really bites about the camera, sorry. Sigh. I can't see your pictures here at work, I'd check them at home on purpose just to see them!

the peach bread sounds good, I might have to steal that recipe for our Michigan Run. Don't forget, Sherry, you'll be seeing Nancy in just a few weeks!

I agree, Nancy and Kim are wonderful hostesses. And I'm sure that Roxie ate exactly whatever was cooked. Dexter? I don't know for sure, but I'm betting he liked whatever was served.

Roger IS a long suffering taste tester, isn't he. LOL Surrounded by women....

Poor Sherry...being forced to eat that food. My heart breaks for you. LOL (and Roger...we'll that man has a reserved seat in heaven I'm sure. Hard life eh Roger?!??!)

Gosh, it all looks so good and I'm ready to do that bread tonight. I'm tired of canning for a bit and need to get the house cleaned so that one is right on target for me. Maureen

i'm so glad that clearly, everyone had a GREAT visit! and your dinner looks nothing less than fabulous! beyond that, i can't imagine anyone who wouldn't love your hostess gift! sheshe--that was simply gorgeous! i am terribly sorry to hear about your camera, nancy. when we were back in ny a few weeks ago, i managed to fry mine too. we sent it back to olympus but, despite the fact that it only rolled into a bit of water for a few seconds, the main board was wet and the camera was done. what a terrible waste of money, huh? sorry to hear it....
