After menopause, atrophy

Most women here seem to be younger than I. I have been menopausal for about 8-10 years, and am experiencing atrophy. My biggest problem has been the Pap smear, but I wonder how far the atrophy goes? I just saw my doctor yesterday, and was surprised at how small I had become. It also probably involves the urethra. Have any of you experienced this, and if so are there herbal mixes that you use that would be helpful? I stopped HRT after about 8 years and am choosing to avoid that route. But I wonder if there are harmless meds that would be helpful. (Sexual activity is not a factor.)

Boy can I tell you a sad story about dryness, with a happy ending, it's sort of embarrassing, but here goes. I was so dry my eurethria (sp) had been pulled up inside of my vagina. When I urinated it drained through my vagina. Some of it stayed inside until I stood up then it drained. I had to go to the bathroom as soon as I felt an urge or I couldn't wait. I can't count the times I have come home and run to the bathroom as soon as I got the door open, often not making it. I was wearing panty liners all the time. I thought it was the typical problem women have and have to have their bladder tacked up. Thank goodnes it wasn't. I no longer wear the pads, no problems at all. The doc prescribed estrace ointment as a topical ointment for 2 weeks out of the month. What a relief, I could have cried I was so happy to know I wasn't facing surgery, a surgery that often doesn't do any good.

There are no "harmless" herbal treatments, if it solves the problem they are as dangerous as the drugs the doc prescribes. My sister is a nutritionist and she takes handfuls of pills, I tried what she recommend for my ailments nothing worked. Also her health is worse than mine.

My mistake as I didn't see that the sweats started before the prednisone...now that is adding more to it. Did you have the bronchitis when the sweats started but weren't on the pred ? Could have been your body fighting off the infection in that case. It is a normal response. So as you say , get off the pred when you are finished and then see how you are doing in a week or 2. My Mom had bad sweats for years and years after menopause was over. She had to stop her hormones when she got breast CA. She never did get over the sweating and she passed away at 88. Hopefully this will not be the case with you. c

I had a sleep study last May, which showed I had various sleep problems (apnea, alpha wave intrusion, no REM sleep). It makes me wonder if lots of women going through menopause begin to have these kinds of problems. I guess I'm finally going to think about trying a cpap machine, but I think it will be a challenge. In retrospect, I really think its been my sleep problems that have made the past 10 years pretty much a constant struggle. I think sleep deprivation can cause all sorts of craziness. Even if you think you've had a good night's sleep, it doesn't mean you have.

I agree with oilpainter. Menopause doesn't just happen all at once. It can take years to be completely in menopause. As my OB/GYN says, even when we don't have periods, our hormones are still fluctuating and can continue to do so for sometimes 10 years. I had a period 9 months after what I thought was the last one, and then I had one a year later. I still can tell that my hormones are fluctuating, 5 years after the last period. Sounds like you are still spitting out a few eggs every once in awhile. I think the higher our FSH gets, the more it flogs our ovaries into putting something out, and you might still have a few eggs left that just needed a little prodding. :)
