Finally getting granite for my kitchen! Help me decide

When we originally built, granite was out of our price range so we went ahead with the formica included in the builders estimate. I've looked forever and we are going to pick it out Friday. The pics are not the best quality, spur of the moment taken with my phone, but I tried to show my backsplash and cabinets the best I could. I have a small kitchen, so even though the black, the darker colors etc. are pretty, I don't think it's for me. I'm looking more at Santa Cecilia, Giallo Ornamental, Kashmir Gold, Venetian Gold, and a few others. I've also looked at edges. What do you think would look best with my cabinet style? I thought about putting ogee on the peninsula, and something different on the counters, but I don't know about that. I like bullnose, but I've read on here is looks thin when installed. Also, what do you think about a curve on the peninsula? The person we are going with said it wouldn't be a problem to do something like that. Like I said, my kitchen is small, so I'm considering that too. Please ignore the "stuff" I pushed aside on the counters, as I was trying to let you get an idea of the backsplash and cabinets. I do tend to stay somewhat neutral, but I can't wait to get rid of the solid beige countertop! Any advice is greatly appreciated. Hope the pics attach!

My choice would be the Giallo or st Ceclia, but any one of your ideas would work. You just have to find the slab that appeals to you.

How fun and exciting...will totally change the kitchen. Look at some of the ideas Boxerpups posted on another thread...some of the cabs looked similar in color to yours.

I have Santa Cecilia in my current kitchen with natural maple cabs...I love it cause u can play off of so many colors....I have all stainless and slim brick set black glass BS. So it would work with your cabs and ur range which has black accents.

I think the bottom line is this: what will you put in the corner (or drawers) in each situation? As I was planning my kitchen layout, I wrote down what was in each cabinet (or stored elsewhere, that I wanted in the kitchen). Then I went through the new layout, putting things away where they made sense - dishes near the DW, utensils and pot holders near the range, glasses near the sink, etc. I measured my crock pot, mixer, largest mixing bowl, etc and figured out where each would go. My super susan will hold things like crock pot, rice cooker, waffle iron, hand mixer, possibly a couple of cast iron frying pans. In the drawers around the closed off corner, I have things that I will use practically every day: dish towels, bags and wraps, cooking utensils, plastic containers, and dry good (flour, sugar, rice, etc). My old kitchen had 30"-tall upper; the new ones are 42", so I have an extra shelf all the way around. That is where I'll put things I don't need often - so I don't need more space for that purpose in the corner. Good luck with your decision!

If you don't want to change windows, I still like the layout I posted earlier. You could do deeper cabinets on either side of the fridge and maybe move the fridge a couple inches closer to the slider. In my last kitchen I had a very small island (39X42) with the fridge directly opposite the stove and the island in between. I never once considered the island a barrier (maybe because the island was small). I usually removed items from the fridge to the sink area. Moving your stove down on the wall would give you a nice prep space and more storage near the stove. I believe you have 5 feet between the edge of your island as I drew it and your dining room table. That should work in your space. Use small tuck under counter stools. If you still think the walkway would be too small, you could do a nice lighted display case facing the dining room. Or just dining room storage. A peninsula could work, but I still like the fridge across the isle. I'm not sure seating works and I moved your stove down a bit to give you more room at the sink. Baking sheets to the left of the stove and pots to the right. Access to the corner from the dining room.

The whole home dehumidifier (attached to your HVAC system) will do the trick. Installing the wood flooring in the spring or the fall (the shoulder seasons) will certainly help. New windows that block a tremendous amount of UV (75% block is probably where you want to be in CA). As for yellowing, stay away from maple...it turns yellow just by turning on an overhead light. And yes it is normally the finish that yellows and not the wood species (maple and cherry being the two notable exceptions for local species that are photo sensitive). And if you want to stay away from yellowing (we are assuming you want a factory finish) then new windows would be an excellent place to start (75% UV block will pretty much do the trick). And for LVP...it doesn't like heat. In fact it does some REALLY strange things when direct sunlight hits the floor. The ROOM temperature might be 85 F (which is too high for LVP) but the sunlight on the FLOOR can be 115 F or higher. LVP is vinyl. Vinyl melts when it gets to hot. As it heats up and then cools down (day time high to night time low), it warps and discolours. Some vinyl products turned purplish-black when exposed to too much heat (anything over 85 F is excessive for indoor furnishings). To stop the EXCESSIVE heat, you will want new windows. The 75% UV block would be the lowest you would go (which is a mid-range product...not super cheap but not super expensive either). You could look at the best of the best = 95% UV block (indoor plants die at this level of UV block) if you are really interested in LVP and keeping the home cool. Laminate has few issues with direct heat...but even laminate has limits. Some will fade in direct sunlight that is SUPER hot. You will void the warranty on the laminate once the home temps reach higher than 85 F. And again the humidity needs to be between 40% - 60% for laminate. To block some of that heat (you guessed it), you will want to look at new windows. For laminate, the entry level UV block of 45% - 50% is going to be "good enough".

If you can change both fan and dining light, then I would have them complement. No recessed lights in the living room? If you must have the fan, then something that hugs the ceiling with a flush mount light too but have primary lighting with an arched lamp and other lamps. Something with silver metal for dining light would complement the kitchen stainless steel/chrome. The type of lighting depends on your style. Same for window fabrics and coloring. You have a neutral background everywhere- what are your favorite colors? Is there a rug in LR with color?

How exciting for you to be getting your stone! You get a medal for displaying so much patience. :)

Would it be possible to get some samples of the stones you're considering and look at them in your space? Looking at your choices in your light with your cabs, tile, floor, etc could make the right one easier to find.

As far as an edge change on the peninsula, I'd forgo that just because I like things simpler. And in that vein, I'd square off the corners of it unless you have a lot of little kids running around whose heads might sustain injury.

I think a lighter granite would be gorgeous in your
beautiful kitchen. I love your cabinets. They are a rich
warm elegant brown that would look stunning with a lighter
granite.

If you can take your door with you to the slab yard
and see if you can find the best slab to go with your
door. Definitely do the curves.

Wow..great pics boxerpups. No kids around so I don't have to worry about edges. I think my kitchen is very plain/neutral, so I think the granite will really make a difference. I'm thinking a 12in overhang on the peninsula , maybe with a curve on the long side. I have the arch on my cabinet doors, is there any rule with that? I do need the same edge on all, I think. I like the bullnose, ogee and the straight(can't remember what it's called). I'll get some samples today. Thanks for any advice, as I am terrible with things like this
