Artichoke spread help?

While I love the usual artichoke dip, I'd like to make an artichoke spread that would not be baked ahead, but that I could mix up and spread on slices of baguette or halved English muffins to bake for a light lunch with soup or salad.

The recipes I've found call for baking the spread before it is spread hot on the bread.

Any help or recipes will be appreciated.

I was at a tea room a few weeks ago that had artichoke spread as one of the tea sandwich choices. It tasted like cream cheese mixed with chopped artichokes, grated Parmesan cheese, chopped capers and basil. It might have had a little garlic powder and ground black pepper in it too. It was spread on little circles of white bread and not heated. Artichokes were the main ingredient, rather than the cream cheese.

It was a nice change from the usual tea sandwich fillings.

There is no reason why you could not make the "usual" artichoke dip...mine has artichokes cream cheese, mayo, parm, garlic and a can of green chilis....and spread on to a croustade and broil until browned.
Doesn't need to be a different recipe.

I have planted J. Artichokes twice in my garden. I have Sandy Soil. Now,the first planting came from a health food market in the produce section. Just bought them, broke them up in sections and planted them about 8" deep. They all came up with no problem. That was last spring. Now I have gotten some from a friend who plants them for shelter for his quail.( He has a bird farm). He has Clay soil. They have not spread from the original row, even though he just mows the dead stalks off in the fall. They only propagate from the bulbs so if you want to get rid of them I would dig them up and SIFT the soil through a wire sieve. I think they are like potatoes in that the smallest piece left in the ground will grow. If you are in an area that freezes hard maybe you could dig them up and leave the hole open and exposed to the frost. I froze one overnite and thawed it and it turned black and looked like a truffle. Boiled until still very firm they taste like artichoke hearts and can be frozen. They have no starch and are fed to diabetes patients in the hospitals in Germany according to a german friend.

I'm late to the party but this is one recipe that I've had many times. The list of ingredients is long but OMG it's just *the* best spinache/artichoke dip I've ever had. California Pizza Kitchen's Spinach/Artichoke Dip 1/4 cup olive oil 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 3/4 cup diced white or yellow onion, cut into 1/8-inch dice 1 1/2 tablespoon minced garlic 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1 1/2 cup chicken stock (preferable homemade) 1 1/2 cup heavy cream 3/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons dehydrated chicken stock base or crumbled bouillon cubes 1 1/2 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 teaspoon sugar 3/4 cup sour cream 12 ounces frozen spinach, defrosted, drained, wrung out by hand, and coarsely chopped 6 ounces canned artichoke bottoms, drained and cut into 1/8-inch slices 1 cup finely shredded Monterey Jack cheese 3/4 teaspoon Tabasco Sauce Blue and white corn tortilla chips Directions: In a large saucepan, warm the olive oil and butter together over medium heat. When the butter has melted, add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until wilted, 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook 2 to 3 minutes longer, stirring frequently and stopping before the onion and garlic brown. Sprinkle the flour and continue cooking, stirring continuously, until the mixture turns a golden-blond color, 10 to 15 minutes. Then, whisking continuously, slowly pour in the stock until it is smoothly incorporated. When the mixture begins to simmer, stir in the cream. Let it return to the simmer. Remove from the heat, add the Parmesan, chicken base or bouillon cubes, lemon juice, and sugar, and stir until thoroughly blended. Add the sour cream, spinach, artichoke bottoms, Monterey Jack cheese and Tabasco sauce, and stir until the ingredients are thoroughly combined and the cheese has melted. Transfer to a warmed serving bowl and serve immediately, accompanied by blue and white corn tortilla chips.

Hello, Hu. :) Transplant shock is made worse by the low light. You can't always expect to keep all the leaves after transplanting. The plant will give up on some of the lower leaves, causing them to die like that, since it can't support that many leaves in the low light, especially when stressed. You've gotten some questionable advice I think about ideal conditions for these, or instead let's say you got correct info without needed context: It's true that growing them in a greenhouse under very high humidity and super-free-draining soil where water just easily pours through is close to ideal. However neither that type of soil nor the high humidity is necessary for an amazing successful plant; and focusing too much on those two factors has caused you to miss the most important limiting factors for your plant: more light & more water. People all over the world grow these to amazing huge leaves in a plain dry house with plain cheap soil or even garden dirt, even though neither is "ideal". I'm afraid your search for the humidity of the bathroom has led you to far-too-low light conditions; and that beautiful greenhouse-style "perfect" aroid soil also requires perfect watering. By being so free-draining, It can cut your margin of error on when you must water in half. So make sure you are getting water to it often enough, and perhaps consider moving it to a higher light spot. I'm not sure what kind of grow light you got for it, but those can often fall short because they focus too much on the spectrum (marketing) instead of the needed intensity. Btw, your seller's comment about a bigger leaf every time was correct for that plant if you didn't repot it and kept in similar light and watering conditions, but transplant shock often sets back the size of new leaves, especially combined with lower light.

Help!! some fast spread disease on my lithops "argyroderma delaetii"

My first impression is in line with Kara. That looks more like scuff marks that have healed rather than marks caused by a disease. However, I've not had a lot of experience with these. Technically, they aren't Lithops but you do have the correct name Argyroderma delaetii. Looks like the Argyroderma are lumped in with the Lithops in the way that they are both often called living stones. They're in the same family, Aizoaceae. I mentioned all of that in case someone wants to try searching Google for info about the plants in question. Might help sort out the info that applies to the issue and what info doesn't. Though just now I tried searching for Argyroderma disease and didn't find much that was helpful. Seems like the biggest concern with growing these is overdoing the watering and causing leaves to split. I guess if it were mine and I was sure there was an infection I'd try spraying it lightly with some Bayer 3 in 1. However, I'm not sure what that might do to the skin of the rest of the plant. Some topical sprays have been known to cause problems for some cacti and succulents.

Linda, could you give me amounts for your dip? Will the dip be thick enough to stay on the bread?

One can....can't tell you how big...because I don't currently have one...I think it's 14 oz. artichokes ( not in oil!!)
Drained, rinsed, patted dry and chopped.
Half an 8 oz block of cream cheese
half a cup of mayo
half a cup of grated parm
garlic......either 3 or 4 cloves crushed or 1/4 tsp granulated....or 1/2 tsp of you are using the non Penzey's kind...or to taste.
Jag of worchestershire (about 1/2 tsp)
One short can of choppede green chilis, well drained.
Mix, chill....spread on whatever and broil until lightly browned.
I often use toasted english muffin quarters.

Try this artichoke and white bean dip. It's a Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall recipe.
2 tbls olive oil
1 small onion chopped
200g artichoke hearts in olive oil, drained, oil reserved
3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
A few sprigs of oregano leaves, chopped
400g tin cannellini beans, drained and rinsed
juice of half a lemon
1/2 tsp dried chilli flakes
2 tbls thick, plain yogurt
25g toasted walnuts
s & p

Heat 1 tbls oil and fry the onion. Chop the artichoke hearts. Add garlic to the pan and stir for a couple of mins. Add oregano, beans, and chokes and cook until everything is heated. Tip mix into a food processor and add the lemon juice, chilli and yogurt. Blend to a corse puree. Season and add oil from the artichoke tin until you get the consistence you want. Serve warm or cold, scattered with chopped walnuts.

I make mine like Islay, except I use neufchatel cheese instead of the yogurt and add roasted red pepper. Can be heated OR used a cold spread. Lower fat than the mayo kind too. Can always top with some parm. cheese.
