Would you consider this love?

I had an argument with my girlfriend last night. We have worked our way through a lot of things and are hoping to get married once we have our problems sorted out. Last night we were talking about loyalty to each other and she said that she feels that it is ok to think of other people while we are having sex. This notion makes me physically sick because i cannot consider that love or loyalty if my wife is thinking of other men while im having sex with her. The same will be true for me. I would not consider it love or loyalty to/for my wife if im thinking of some women from my office while having sex with her. We had a huge argument over this. Those of you who are married , have you ever done that to your spouse? and do you consider this love/loyalty?

I think that it's something that people (married or not) may do from time to time, but who actually says that they do it? What would that accomplish? All I can see that statement doing is hurting you. Does she now think that you two can have sex without you wondering who she is thinking about it? Wondering who's face she's picturing on yours? Can you elaborate a bit more on the situation that brought this statement up? I can't just think that anyone would be like "Hey, while we're having sex, I'm going to be thinking of other men. Hope you don't mind honey!" What brought this up? What did she think her statement would accomplish?

I think that a *bit* of fantasising is perfectly healthy and normal, and it isn't a gauge to how much a person loves their partner. I also think that this is a private matter and saying something like "Thanks baby that was great, I pretended you were Brad Pitt.." would be unfair and unkind. However, if you were having a conversation and this topic came up, you should be happy that your girlfriend was willing to truthfully answer you.

In my opinion, the only time this becomes a matter of love/loyalty is if the fantasising is frequent *and* about an ex or co-worker, male friend, etc. because that could be a sign of an underlying issue of truly wanting to be with someone else.

In a healthy relationship your girlfriend should be with you most of the time when she's "with you", but realize that a little bit of fantasy every now and then, is just something that adds a bit of spice. Often when a person fantasises there may not even be a specific "face" they're picturing. Some women like a man in uniform, some like cowboys or "badboys", etc.. Considering finding out what your girlfrinds fantasy "type" is and, if you're up for it, do a little role playing.

Remember that usually a fantasy "type" is just that, fantasy. If she truely wanted to be with a cowboy/badboy/moviestar/or whatever, she wouldn't be in a relationship with you, she would be out there finding one. She's in a relationship with *you* because she loves *you* and want's to be with *you*.

If you still find the thought truely offensive, but your relationship is otherwise healthy and loving, then you may just want to incorperate a policy of "Don't ask, Don't tell" on that issue. Let your girlfriend know that it bothers you and ask her to not bring up the topic again (and don't do it yourself either). Then forget about it and just enjoy the fact that you're (hopefully) getting regular satisfying sex with a woman who *does* love you.

You're welcome Anele. It may not have worked, but knowing that can be a big help. Although who knows? Sometimes the "wrong" things can work perfectly in the right settings. I find that until you try something, you are never sure if it will work for you or not. That's why as I didn't stop when making the virtual. The main thing is that it makes *you* happy and works for *you*. Not everyone here at GW. Because if you try to do that you'll never get anything done. Personally I like a wide variety of styles of furniture. Mid-Century Modern, Art Deco, Victorian....Basically anything older than MCM. Newer furniture just doesn't have the woods or is built like the older stuff was. In my opinion anyway. I also think it's very important to reuse. I'm not saying I don't like some of the newer furniture, but I'm not passionate about. You'll know when you find the right piece. I just hope it fits your space! Since we're on the subject of dresser being used for other purposes I bought this piece pictured below a few weeks ago to turn into an entertainment center if I ever talk my hubby into getting a flat screen TV. Once cleaned up I'll stain it dark walnut, freshen the hardware with spray paint if Brasso doesn't work first then convert the drawers behind the doors to hold the cable and the sound system boxes. The other drawers will be used for storing movies. This could easily work for a buffet too. I only paid $5.49 for it. Half price furniture day at a local thrift store. Do you have a picture of you dining room? I'm thinking I've seen it, but I could be mixed up about that. My brain is much better with long term memory.

NHB, I love decorating books. I don't really use them for coffee table books - although I do have a few out in the sunroom. I love several of the magazines you listed, and for that same reason, I love decorating books. They are something I may look at time and time again for ideas, inspiration or just to enjoy the pretty pics! I would have never described you as a minimalist. To the OP, I love Kitty Bartholomew's book. There are also several cottage decor books that I love and several window treatment design books that generally show whole rooms. I also have Bunny William's book, although I will go against the grain and say that I do not like it as well as all the hype it generated. It was a bit of a let down when I got it. Still a beautiful book. Martha Stewart has a book on her new old house, or something to that effect, I greatly enjoyed it. I will have to look at some of my titles and get back to you. Charles Fraudee is a good one as several mentioned. tina

Wow, S Wheeler, poster came here with a question, not to get bawled out on the internet, maybe dial it back a notch? Please don't tell her she 'deserves' a hack job when she asks a question. That's not playing very nice. (yes, I know you don't have to play nice, you do willingly offer up your expertise, and I do like straight shooters, but come on...don't try to intimidate people!) In my opinion the paying customer does get a *reasonable* amount of 'telling x person how to do their job', because the trades' idea of a 'standard job' does not always coincide with what the customer wants. Fabricators, good ones, obviously know their trade and their stones, and we should listen carefully to their expertise; I agree, a quality installer likely won't want to install a patchwork quilt and put his name on it. I certainly see your point. But stone fabricators are not designers or architects, and I wouldn't bow down to any trade's aesthetic judgments as something I should just blindly trust--especially with stone that is expensive and should be done to all parties' satisfaction on the first go round. I think OP deserves to understand what's happening with her install. I was the one who said I went to the yard and taped off the cuts on my slab to make sure the fabricators and I were on the same page. I wanted to make sure there was complete understanding on both sides as to how things would go BEFOREHAND. And then, I wasn't even there on install day, and I came home pleased as punch with the job. Fabricators/installers are happy, I am happy. There now, that wasn't too painful, was it? In my experience, it is the quality and experienced outfits that can explain their recommendations well and clearly and are transparent and open to questions. A person doesn't need to be temperamental to be good at what s/he does.

Though I'd post an update for posterity. After the fabricator told me they were going to replace the top I got a call from Viatera asking about it and saying they were sending someone out. I gave them the fabricators number and told them they should talk to them and figure it out. The fabricator then called me back and said that while most of the manufacturers they work with just have them replace and deal with the claim after Viatera wants to try and fix it first. I told him I was fine with that. They sent someone a couple of days ago and he was able to polish/buff it out on site. He basically refinished the whole countertop, it took him quite a while and he had to do it twice to get it all, but it looks lovely! In fact I like the finish better than the factory finish, its not as glassy looking, it doesn't have that matte look (which I was originally attracted to but decided against because I heard it was hard to care for), its still very shiny just not "glassy" if that makes sense. He said he's gotten really good at doing them because Viatera always wants him to try even if he doesn't succeed they'll still pay him, he said most other manufactures don't want you to touch it unless you're sure it can be fixed. Either way, I'm happy with it, and finally was able to hook up the faucet and use the island in its entirety. Now I'm wondering if there is anyway to request this shiny, but not glassy, finish for the back counters when I'm ready to do them?

ricgad...it seems that if she needs to do this to get turned on so early in your relationship...well...doesn't sound great for the future...like 10-15 years from now. This should be a time when she is so into you, that it occupies much of her thinking, at the early stages in love. Where the whole world seems better, just because you are in it! Just my opinion for whatever it is worth. Seems that you should calmly open up some areas of discussion about all of this without getting angry, so that she will feel free to tell you the "truth" about what she believes. There are people who think it is OK to sleep with other people. Is she perhaps someone who thinks that way? Can she imagine herself faithful to you for the rest of her life? I think you two need to really talk about all of this...and don't blow up at her because then she will just tell you what you want to hear to avoid the arguments and fighting. And I think you need know "the truth" so you know if this is someone that has the same beliefs as you do, instead of finding out years later...once you have kids, etc. Have the courage to find out her beliefs now. Perhaps you could ask her...what would she do if 5-10 years from now, and the newness and excitement has worn off...and if she didn't feel attracted to you...would she feel it was OK to sleep with someone else? How does she feel about all of this? How do you feel?

I'm still laughing at jenfur's post, that was funny. I think that was a stupid thing for her to say and if she can say something to you like that without caring about your feelings you should proceed with caution marrying her. It's a proven fact that what one thinks on sometimes they will act on, so if she's thinking about having sex with her ex while sexing you chances are you might walk in on her having sex with her ex one day. Just a word to the wise. I can't begin to imagine telling my husband i love you and i'm loyal to you but when we have sex i don't think about having sex with you i think about having sex with another man. I think that would absolutely crush his ego and he would be so self concious about sex with me probably till the day one of us died. That was very cruel of her to say and I think you should really reconsider if you want to marry a person that would say that to you.
