Bathtub cover for sitting?

Not sure if this belongs in "Bathroom" or "Decorating", but it applies to both! Recently as we were looking at homes, we saw the most unique idea for a bathtub which in our case was a great idea since our garden tub is only used to bath a couple of dachshunds occasionally. The homeowner had covered a piece of board with foam & decorative fabric, placed pillows around and placed it OVER the bathtub creating a window seat for the bathroom. I want to do this, but haven't figured out how to do the bottom so the staples/tacks do not scrub the tub. I tho't I had a picture, but unfortunately didn't get one. Any ideas? Has anyone done this & want to share pictures?

Not sure of my memory, but the first thought was The Christopher Lowell Show, a curtained bath with a piano hinged seat/cover. Can't memory visualize, will search a bit. Hopefully some one else remembers...

I've seen it on HGTV. They put a piece of plywood over the tub. That was topped with a slightly larger cushion, with fabric on both the top and bottom of it.

Are you looking for something that adds function or for looks? A small table next to the tub would hold a drink. Do people actually read in the tub? I once tried but logistically it seemed more difficult than relaxing with a book in bed.

I need advice about selecting a free standing bathtub for our master bath remodel. I’m looking for a 60” tub with the maximum interior space. The Victoria + Albert IOS is the best I’ve found so far (and have been able to sit in at a local store). But the price is pretty steep. Any suggestions of something similar? Thanks!

If I want to take a bath, I want to be able to stretch out my legs. Babies have shorter legs :-) I sat in the Kohler Underscore yesterday 60 x 30 and the lumbar support is awesome! I'm 5'7" and had another 3 inches for my feet so could stretch my toes too! Not a silly question. When you have water forcefully hitting the inclined side of the tub high enough up, though most of it will splash downwards, some of it goes sideways, and some of it -- counterintuitively -- splashes back upwards from where it strikes the side and you can actually have a small puddle start to form on the floor in this area from water spray bouncing up and escaping this way. It the water doesn't hit the side of the tub, but only the bottom of the tub, it doesn't bounce high enough to do this.

You could glue felt fabric on the bottom after you're finished, that would protect the edge of the tub.

I'll be curious to get a visual of this, would the deck and tub be covered completely, how do you hide the tub filler ? wouldn't it be heavy to remove when you want to use the tub ?

I saw this on hgtv. When they wrapped the fabric around to staple they made it so the fabric ( where they were going to staple) went farther in on the board so when you stapled it didn't hit the tub..The tub filler you just prop up pillows over it. I have covered my tub like this at Christmas and put the white pillow stuffing on it to look like snow and then put a Christmas tree there.

I haven't completely thought this through--just got started on it; however, frequently while in the bathroom, I'll sit on the only seat there to remove toenail polish, put lotion on my feet/legs, etc & that led me to think how nice it'd be do have the "window seat". I've searched thru HGTV & can't find the episode/article. Like I said, I saw this in a home, but was only there briefly--not long enough to really examine it. So haven't tho't about how to lift it. Would welcome other ideas!

I believe it was Design on a Dime. You could also attach the cover with velcro, or, as suggested, line it (which would be nicer than just a plywood bottom anyway.

Another option is to order a hot tub cover custom made in the size you need. Not as pretty, but could work.

Just thought, face the tub apron in wood and with piano hinges, make panels to fold back, and when tub is in use, fold forward?

On the hgtv show i'm thinking the people no longer ever used the tub so didn't worry about taking it off to bath.
Think it was on decorating cents.

Are you, by any chance, in Texas? A gal on the Great Impressions decorating website did this several years ago. She lived in the Dallas/FtW area, I believe. Maybe you've looked at her house! Anyhoo, it wasn't very well received by most of the people over on that board, from what I remember, but it worked really well for her family. I don't have any pics saved of it, though.

Actually, no, but am in NC & saw it in Charlotte. I have a picture--unfortunately it on VCR when we went to that house (was house hunting).

Finished except for a few pillows which I'll make tomorrow, but couldn't wait to show you the results! BTW, haven't painted because our home is on the market, so all the walls are cream colored. This project was actually easier once we tackled it, spent less than $70 and only a few hours! The pics show the close ups. There's one that also shows the tab to pull the seat out from the the wall. What do you think?

geebee, that looks Fabulous! the colors and textures with your rug are very rich. It looks soft and elegant. Well and tastefully done!
