Kitchen Windowsill

Redoing our kitchen, we have a "standard" kitchen sink window; standard trim, standard depth.

I would appreciate hearing or seeing any creative solutions to solve this boring look.

We considered a garden window and even "punching out" the window a bit, but both seem very expensive relative to the problem.

Well, I am a gardener, and my DH suggested we convert both our kitchen windows to Greenhouse windows. I love them, and him for suggesting it- I would have balked at the price- but then I went and got 11 window estimates (oh Yes I did!), and was able to find the quality and price I could afford. (We replaced all the windows in the house).

If I was to do it again, I'd make the windows even lower, and if possible to coordinate, have the bottom of the window be at counter height.

Also, depends on your climate- I live in the Pacific NorthWest, so fairly mild. My sister loved my windows so much, she wanted to do the same in her kitchen. But, she lives in Calgary, Alberta and it was no go, cuz it gets too cold.

We put a greenhouse window in our new kitchen and it was surprisingly affordable. The standard 3'x3' size was listed at $479. Lowe's had a 3-day Memorial Day sale which offered 20% off special order windows, so we got ours for less than $400. They offer 10% off special order all the time if you can't wait till summer. It came with low-e glass and was very well built. Install was easy. Standard sizes come in 1' increments. 3'x3', 3'x4', 3'x5', etc. If you need a special size, the price goes way up - about double for a 3'2"x3'2 vs the 3'x3'.

I do regret not installing the window flush with the counters, but that would have meant ordering a special size and reframing instead of using the existing framing in the wall. Lots more time and lots more $.

We live in Binghamton and it gets cold, bone chilling cold. Not Alaska cold, but we see negative numbers on the thermometer for chunks of January. So far so good. The air in front of the window actually feels warmer than it did in front of the old piece of sh** window. The floor of the window does feel cold, though.

You can grow dill basil and parsley easy with very small pots even cilantro grow good,Also lettuce and most anything with out tapping roots.Here are my pic all iv grow for years and in selfwatering milk qt jugs very small but need alot of water I keep them in morning sun not to much sun very easy lettuce I have time with ants in it .And dont forget mint plants they also do great with alot of watering. It is a hybrid of aloe and gasteria, Gasteraloe, probably 'Flow' I have one that got similar - not as etiolated as yours (see some pace between the leaves - that could be from being in same position too; thickness of the stem and the color of leaves); but as it aged, stem got bit too long. It grows quite well and compact, but got top-heavy with growing thick, juicy leaves and many offsets, some growing in-between the leaves. I just beheaded it few days ago. Here is the plant before:...and after - top on left, and 3 offsets:I am leaving them to callus for a while. They will go into very gritty mix (mine is very inorganic), and will be kept dry for a while. I'll keep them in partial shade since it has been extremely hot, until they start growing roots. They would grow roots even out of soil, I am not 100% sure since I didn't behead it before) but am very comfortable to suggest it - 99% sure :). I will likely keep at least 1 unpotted just to prove it :) They will grow just like aloes - see - THIS THREAD - where I showed beheaded Aloe variegata. There are many posts with photos by other members in this thread showing other plants being beheaded. Bottom part - original/beheaded stem with roots - should continue growing and having offsets too. Btw, I would recommend for you to improve soil - it seems to be somehow water retaining: I never has so many dried up leaves with black spots. Very likely from occasional too much water or soil staying too wet for too long. That could be improved on very easily :)

Thanks, Gang. I really appreciate everything you say. About the speckled pumpkin, yes it is ceramic. I found it last year at Joann's on sale. OA, the glitter pumpkins in the apothecary jar aren't ornaments, just table decorations. The "spotty glasses" are cute by the way. Jeanne, I don't like using glitter either but I learned two things. First one, do it outside. LOL. I usually take a shallow box, to catch the excess glitter and reuse it, and hold the item over it or sit it in the box. Also, a gal told me to put glitter in a salt shaker as it gives good control. Truthfully, I rather BUY glittered stuff. LOL. I remembered this morning, thank goodness, that I'd bought a Pilgrim Nutcracker months ago. So got him out of my closet and he's now next to the new tall apothecary jar. I also felt the green turkey on the kitchen counter was lacking, so added a slim little green vase of colorful faux mums to her and the Dollar Tree platter arrangement. hugs, Karen who's still trying to find a place for her 4 S&P turkey sets!!

I had a problem with a cat using the corner of the living room for a litter box. After replacing the carpet and installing hardwood, I thought the problem was solved. But no. I heard some scratching noise on the hardwood and went to investigate and found a rather unpleasant pile. What I found to solve the problem is called SSSCat. It is about the size of a hairspray can and the top contains a motion sensor. When the cat walks by it blasts a spray of air. I put one in each of the 2 corners the offenses were occurring. One blast was all it took. That cat will not set foot in the room again. you can use it on counters, furniture, rooms you want to keep the cat out of. It may not be as pizzaz-y as you're looking for. But we dropped our windows flush with the countertop in our new kitchen. It was a change we made from the original plans, and I can't believe how much it opens up our kitchen and frames the sink area.

One thing I am demanding when we finally redo this kitchen is a greenhouse window flush with the counter. Besides being able to have plants and more window I am short (5'1")and the thought of actually being able to see out the window gives me something to look foward to.

Laxsupermom - I went to college in Binghamton! It sure does get cold up there!

I would echo the idea of getting a greenhouse window counter height! We put one in our last house as part of a kitchen reno that was at the "standard" above sink window height - I think sill about 5-6" above counter and I found it to be a huge PITA. I am also short (5'3") and could not reach anything in it without dragging a stool out and basically climbing over the sink to get to the window.

Ditto on the garden window at counter height. We put in a garden window a year or two after we did the kitchen and couldn't do counter height...a real regret but I LOVE the window anyway. Others on here have posted pics of garden window where their granite is the "floor" of the window, and they look absolutely gorgeous.
