The January KT Daily Trivia standings (a fun analysis)

Just for fun, here's a quick analysis of how we did in January.

Each month, Casey is at the very top, or close to it. She doesn't win every game, but when she's not the winner she's not far away from winning. Lydia's record is similar. This month even though she won only one game, she came in third--just four points away from second place. That's because she's so consistently good. I, on the other hand, mess up royally at least once a month. I have 8 wins this month, but finished 205 points behind Casey. That's because of those times I lost big. Also, I almost always forget to play one or two days each month. This month it was one day, and I think Lydia and some others did the same.

Nice to see so many people with wins this month. Win or lose, it's a fun game and I'm grateful to Casey for turning us on to it.

I'm right there with you, Alisande (Susan). 4th place for the month; that's the best ever for me. I usually have a win or 2 for the month but just when the leaders (Speed demons) get one wrong and I guess correctly. There are usually a few days when in my haste I miss a question I should know. It's a head slap moment. It amazes me when there is a really obscure question and some people still know the answer. Example: What Australian city won the world cup of rugby in 1998? Really?

Wayne, here's the headline...Crystal power Palmtop Nuclear Fusion Device Invented By Michael Schirber LiveScience Staff Writer posted: 27 April 2005 01:00 pm ET The nuclear reaction that powers the Sun has been reproduced in a pocket-sized device, scientists announced today. Researchers have for years tried to harness nuclear fusion to power the world. But its cousin, nuclear fission -- the breaking apart of atoms -- is the only method so far commercially viable. The latest invention is not in the same league as efforts to build complex commercial reactors. The new device creates a relatively small number of reactions, and requires more energy to operate than it produces. The Real Deal (AP) - Previous claims of tabletop fusion have been met with skepticism and even derision by physicists. In one of the most notable cases, Dr. B. Stanley Pons of the University of Utah and Martin Fleischmann of Southampton University in England shocked the world in 1989 when they announced that they had achieved so-called cold fusion at room temperature. Their work was discredited after repeated attempts to reproduce it failed. Fusion experts noted that the new UCLA experiment is credible because, unlike the 1989 work, it did not violate basic principles of physics. "This doesn't have any controversy in it because they're using a tried and true method,'' said David Ruzic, professor of nuclear and plasma engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "There's no mystery in terms of the physics.'' -- Associated Press But the configuration is so small and simple that its creators think it may inspire unforeseen applications. "I certainly find it interesting that you can heat a cubic centimeter crystal in your hand, then plunge it in cold water and it will cause nuclear fusion," Seth Putterman from the University of California Los Angeles told LiveScience. Putterman's lay description greatly oversimplifies how the compact apparatus works. Specifically, Putterman and collaborators heat a pyroelectric crystal, lithium tantalite, from minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit to plus 45 in a matter of minutes. This generates an electrical charge -- 100,000 volts -- across the tiny crystal, which is housed in a chamber filled with deuterium gas, a heavy form of hydrogen. The high voltage is focused onto a needle-thin tip, which strips electrons from nearby deuterium nuclei and then accelerates them at a solid target containing deuterium. When two deuterium nuclei collide together at high speed, they fuse to form helium. The Sun also fuses atoms in thermonuclear reactions that create light and heat. The byproduct of the newly discovered lab reaction is a particle called the neutron. The scientists detect about 1,000 neutrons per second. Because neutrons are so penetrating, Putterman said that a hand-held neutron source might one-day be used to do geologic surveys or to look into cargo containers for nuclear devices. "Current neutron generators are extremely cumbersome," Putterman said. "They are about as big as a dentists X-ray machine, so you canÂt carry them into the field." Pyroelectric crystals could also provide a beam of ions for use as a microthruster in a miniature spacecraft. The research is described in the April 28 issue of the journal Nature.

Great to hear from you Patti! I've missed things being away. Hope your packing goes well. Too bad your there and I'm here...I had a ton of good boxes you could have had. Today was not a bad day at all. I had taco restaurant style chips with my salsa. It's all been added to my WW tracker for today. Again, I'm working on portion sizes to relearn, adjust habits. I enjoyed the salsa. DH said it was missing something. I agreed. Added some Tex Mex seasoning and he put hot taco sauce in his bowl (no thanks). I also could have put another clove of garlic in it - but garlic powder did the trick. Fun way to add fresh veggies to a meal that's for sure. Got some more wood down from the pile (fresh air), unloaded some more from the trailer - almost done with that job. We've given the trailer to our builder who can use it. It paid for itself and then some, got us through a tough time. Now its ready to go to a new owner who knows trailers and can give it the tlc it needs. Once that's gone it opens our back road/trail towards our friends across the field and our back 40. Getting outdoors everyday is imperative for my health. I don't want to be a hermit or get cabin fever. Routine is helpful too. I'll be glad when my routine switches from settling in to working on other things. But hey, we home finally! Good afternoon, y'all! I've been up and out since 9 this morning for our sorority. A friend and I drove over to Kemah/beach area to the Hilton where our sorority was having an Arts & Crafts day and board meetings. We just went to sell ESA aprons that one member made. We sold a lot of them, and we shopped a LOT! Every chapter had at least one table and sold handmade items from small bags of snacks to fruit cakes, quilts, painted items and lots of Christmas gift items. I bought decorated gift baskets to hold my homemade fudge for neighbor gifts this year, goodies to include in my WV friend's Christmas box, and soup mixes, jellies, pickles, and chili mixes to include in stockings. One chapter was selling paperback and hardcover mysteries, and I really stocked up there! Once I read everything, I'll donate the books for our community Expo in January where we (ESA) have a table and pass out literature about St. Jude hospital and try to earn $$$ to send to them. We sell the books for 50 cents each, and last year we were able to mail St. Jude a check for $33.50! Viki and I stopped on the way to the event at a Tuesday Morning store and had a blast mostly just lookingm too. Once I rest a bit, I have to fix my corn casserole to take for the covered-dish luncheon at church tomorrow. I love that stuff, but it's terribly fattening, so I'll just make a very small dish of it for us and the rest for tomorrow. Tikanis, I like how you emphasized 'considering'! Happy puttering to you! Raeanne, you get to attend some neat sounding parties. Things aren't quite that upscale around here, but that's alright. It is what it is, right? Suzanne, that video was a hoot! Thanks for posting it. Glad you finally spotted your fox! The dr. told hubby to continue eating red meat because his hemoglobin count has dropped some, so we're having grilled steak and baked sweet potato (me) and red potatoes (hubby) and salad for dinner. I'm already hungry as lunch at the event wasn't all that exciting or filling. Once he gets that grilled fired up, I'll be ready to eat! Wishing everyone a relaxing Saturday evening!

Lydia, if the goal is to win on a given day, then no, it wouldn't be fair. But I think it works if the goal is to win for the month. That would be true I suppose IF the questions aren't mixed up... say the questions you get on Monday are the ones I get on Wednesday. But still... not really fair. I might do good at guessing on a day that I get a couple sports questions... but I end up getting 6 points cause I am slow and because that particular day a a lot of peeps get a easy group of questions. Now if I had got the sports questions on a day that most everyone else had got the sports questions and I had guessed correctly... I'd have been in the top few players. If you don't make the top 10 on any given day, you really aren't accumulating many points. So.... it really isn't fair anyhow... too many variables. That said... I think I did pretty good for the month of April. I happened to guess correctly on 2 sports questions today! Yay! Now who got a hockey question AND a archery question today??? Did you get those questions anytime this month? I really don't think we are getting the same questions throughout the month. I don't think I will ever beat you, Alisande or Casey or some of the other speedy geniuses... but I don't think the game is really completely fair unless we are getting the same questions on the same day.

Ron, I suspect no one knows the answer to those obscure international sports questions . . . we just have some good guessers.

If I'm wrong, folks, feel free to correct me. :-)

And am I the only one who has answered the same question incorrectly multiple times? If I come upon one, I'm aware that it has been a problem for me in the past, but then I still choose the wrong answer. (Slap both sides of head.)

I think if someone could be in the top 10 every day, they'd win for the month even if they never took first place for any of the days. I'm definitely not the fastest player as you can see by my 'one win' for the month. lol The more everyone plays, the faster everybody gets.

Alisande, there's some questions I consistently get wrong.. usually easy ones too. I always say "Model A" to the car question when I should know by now the answer is "Model T". Argh! I'll laugh if that is one of the questions today!

Who's Slushy?? He/she has had some really fast speeds lately.

I'm one that consistently answer the same question wrong and am absolutely no good on sports, movies,since I don't watch movies,or most music.

My computer is so slow that sometimes it takes 15 to 20 seconds just for the page to load before I can begin answering questions.

Sometimes if I'm lucky I end up in the top 10. But my percentage is way lower than anyone elses. I guess by just playing every day (and guessing right sometimes) helps.

Sleeperblues, many times the questions have been asked before so it's easy to answer quickly, but I don't know how people can consistently do them in 30-40 seconds every day. Wish I knew! I do try to look back over the ones I miss so I can try to remember the answer if the question comes up again. But answering 10 questions with 4 possible answers each can be difficult, to say the least.

I'm really addicted to that frustrating game, darn it!

I have also answered the same question wrong numerous times. I think, "Why do I do this to myself?" But, everyday I'm back playing again.

I rarely know the sports questions, especially car racing, soccer/rugby or football. But I am a good guesser or just lucky. Here's a tip.....if you absoultely don't know the answer just click the first one and keep on going. You'll get a faster time than if you ponder over a question you don't know and more times than not the 1st answer is the right one!

I'm a quick reader, that helps with my fast times, but I also have very fast internet. Look out when we get Fibre Op in a few months! LOL

I'm a quick reader with fast Internet, too, but my trivia times were a lot slower until Casey pointed out that it helps to use the mouse's scroll wheel. Thanks, Casey!

I enjoy the game as well...NEVER will I be fast,,heaven knows...but the challenge is exciting.. and yes it is good guessing more often than not.

PumpToad, here's a link to the game. Casey set it up for us some time back. All the players are from the KT, although not all the names are identical to our KT screen names. Most of us play every day. The quiz consists of 10 questions, and it's timed. The Standings page shows how people did on a given day, and at the end of each month the top scorers are listed in the Hall of Fame. I hope you'll join us!
