Have you seen the movie 'defiance'....?

Denny and I went to see it last week.

I love movies that are based on true stories.

This is a story about saving the lives of several hundred Jewish people during the Holocaust(sp?)

I'm sure there is a book telling the story..I'd like to read it.

The movie could not have covered all the stories there was to tell. Even though it was a long movie I had no trouble sitting through it.

Today I got a video email of another hero during that time...Her name was Irena Sendler...She saved children.

If anyone would like to see the video I could email it to you...it's just a short one...but I can't copy and save the address to link it from here...

Patti I like to see that video, please. Such a sad subject, but I'm always interested in the survivors.

Because I have been laid up for so long, a co-worker of my DH has been giving me movies to watch and this is one of them, maybe I will watch it today. He gets all the new movies on CD's right away.

I see you your "Epic" and Victor Mature movies and raise you "The Manitou." I think I was on a date when I was subjected to this 1978 movie that, according to the IMDB, offers the following plot line: A psychic's girlfriend finds out that a lump on her back is a growing reincarnation of a 400-year-old demonic, dwarf Native American spirit. And, Linda C, Tony Curtis starred as the psychic. I don't remember much about it other than it was bad, bad, bad. Runner up might be the last remake of "The Island of Dr. Moreau" with Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer. It was far more awful than it should have been.

Yes, we saw it. I thought it was very well done and agree with your comments. The acting was superb. I thought the the costuming was very nicely done too. Their clothes were perfect. The apartment was wonderful and the kitchen struck me as well. It reminded me of my grandparents place in their final years. Then I remembered that old charming buildings just don't always have old charming kitchens. Two DSs live in NYC in pre-war apts in great old buildings with kitchens that don't have the charm and character of the rest of the space. Seems the bathroom was kind of like that in the movie as well, though old bathrooms sometimes have old charming tile even if the tub is shot and lighting terrible. Though hardly an uplifting film, I was glad to have seen it and felt it compelling. I didn't tear up watching it, but was "spent" at the end. We all have our time and the road out of here may not be exactly what we or our loved ones would choose. Amour has the oldest actress nominated. Did you see the film with the youngest? Beasts of the Southern Wild. Any thoughts on that one? I have seen it as well. Have you seen The Master? I need to get to Life of Pi and Django.......

MsMeow- It's a Wonderful Life is one of the best movies ever made. I don't think people truly appreciated it at the time and while the message is powerful...I think the real magic is showing what America looked like in the 1930s and 1940s. The King and I with Yul Brynner. Theater on Sundays is showing old movie favorites. Hadn't seen the movie since I was pg, in 1965. Love every minute of the movie, with friends, yesterday. We plan to go in to two weeks to see Gone with the Wind. The wurlitzer organ is played with a sing along before the movie.

I saw it last week. I thought it was very well acted. I also came away with wanting to learn more about this particular group.

I just clicked on the link and watched the preview. I have to ask - is it very bloody and gory? I can manage violence, but if it's excessive, no. And, without giving a spoiler, is the ending reasonably upbeat? Being Jewish, I have heard, read and seen so much about the Holocaust and WW2 that I can't take much more. I will not watch Schindler's List, and when DH plays his WW2, Hitler, Nazi, heroic partisan movies, I just go to another room. But I love Daniel Craig and would like to see Defiance! Any opinions?

The ending is more upbeat than you can imagine "ANY" story about those times being...The two brothers were hero's. After the movie is over it tells just a little of the rest of their lives.

Blood/gory...???...ummm...Some I guess..anytime there are any battles, there is some blood. It's true to life.

There were a lot of the "Forest People" left to tell their story.

Hi Patti - I just sent you two "e"s; the second one explains the first; I am such a cyber-klutz. I used your "send me an email" that's posted on your My Page. I would like to learn Irena's story. Let me know if you received them, either here, or to my regular addy.

War violence is okay, well, not okay IYKWIM, but not a problem for me to watch, as long as it's not Saving Private Ryan in glorious closeup! So I guess we'll be waiting eagerly for the DVD.

Sable...I will say there were a couple scenes of trenches with ........but they were not up close and they were rather foggy. It was bad, but I felt handled with care...

Did you watch the trailers to get an idea of the film?

I'd hate to make it sound like a Disney movie...because it isn't...But it's not like the one you mentioned that you can't watch either..

Just cover your eyes if it has a bad part...

What do any of you other that have seen it think?

My DH and I saw Defiance two weeks ago.
We both love movies about true stories.
This movie was very well done. Some parts are difficult
to watch because it was horrific during that time in history.
The people involved went through hell and were so strong.
I sometimes tell my husband that the generation that survived that war were the most inspirational generation there was.
I wish I had 1/2 of their determination.
Great movie.

Patti - Thank you for that video. I don't think there are adequate words to describe that kind of courage and I'm so glad that GB told her story. As to her not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize - well, there are many righteous people who have been passed by. Irony noted.

I linked to more details about her. In Israel, in Jerusalem, is the great memorial to Holocaust victims, Yad VaShem. One of its most affecting areas is a lovely country lane shaded by hundreds of trees; the Avenue of the Righteous Among the Nations, meaning non-Jews who helped saved Jews (and others) from the Nazis. It's pictured on the top right of the link below. I have walked there often, always moved by its stillness and serenity. Irena's tree is at the entrance. Of course, thousands of people were rescuers, and they are all named and honored on Yad VaShem's website. After watching your video, I suspected that she might be listed, so googled the site and found her!

Declansmom - every time I see your name I smile, because our first and only DGS is named Declan. That was the first time I'd heard the name and it took awhile (about three minutes) to adjust to. I want to call him Dex, but DS and DDIL prefer his full name.
