Do either of these cabinet finishes work with this floor tile?

I need opinions/a reality check. We are not/cannot replace the tile (budget, logistics, and causes issues with other parts of the house). And, since the ceramic is functional, we would like to make it work. What do you think of these for cabinet finishes:Natural cherry and/or SW Dover White. Do either work? Could we do both: Cherry on the base w the white on the uppers?

It's is a small space. There will be a total of 8 cabinets! 5 base and 3 wall (2 glass front). There are 2 west facing windows. We want to keep the room light and warm. The house is a small NYC suburb 1928 Dutch colonial revival, only 17' wide and 1500 Sqr feet. We have glass door knobs etc but the house isn't refined/fancy and it's not rustic. This area looks for stone or man made quartz counters. I don't really like granite.... Carrara? Soapstone? Input on counters is welcome. Please ignore the white and American cheese wall colors. Thanks!

I like the white better next to the tile. Although I love stained cabinets, in this case there is just something off in the undertones. I also think the while is a good style match for a 1928 house. With glass door knobs elsewhere in the house, I'd think about finding glass/acrylic knobs for the cabinets. They make matching pulls too, so that's a thought.

And you're right, that is so American Cheese Gold!

ice1 - Yes, that's the tile I was referring to. Thanks so much for sharing your photos. I love the Kashmir on your floors and counter. Is it hard to take care of on the floor? What do you use when you mop? Where do you live? I only ask because I live in San Antonio and wonder if the cold tile would really matter. We only have really cold days a few times each winter. That said...it was in the upper teens for 4 days a week or so ago. however, that's a fluke. Thanks for sharing your son's kitchen choices. Is his a formal kitchen? I don't want to have a formal look. I just like the crisp look the tile has. I prefer that over muddy / earthtone colors. It just seems simple and clean to me. But I don't want formal. Hm. Seaglass 7 - Thanks for your input. I will check out the slate and the lighter colors in the other line. I'm not really going for rustic per se...but I certainly don't want formal....just clean and crisp. I think crisp could be achieved with slate. Thanks again. Writersblock - I agree with you. The tile is very realistic without lots of veining and not expensive. Just out of curiosity...what else is near the top of your list if you have to retile? That might give me some more inspiration. Keep the ideas flowing. Thus far the flooring has been the hardest thing for me. :-)

Any chance what fits? that I could swap the curtains? I probably could, but they are much thinner/cheaper. I could always put the tropically curtains in the LR, but then I would have to start over in looking for curtains for the DR. I have been trying to make a post and lost the internet. I am really torn. Maybe that means neither, but I really think both could work for different reasons. I have been trying to figure out how to get more green in this room. The room across the little foyer will be green walls with an orange/green rug. I tried to take a picture of the rug from the DR to show the oranges but it just came out too dark. I do think I am leaning towards more formal then I would like in the DR. I am trying to go more casual. I have two painted cabinets in the kitchen and I love them. There is really no painted wood in this house (trim, furniture etc) Kitchen area: (DH has since hung these on the walls) So the green table set would match the colors in the drapes, bring the green in from the LR and casual it down a bit. Not so sure how it would go with the rug though. On the other hand, I think the glass table would work really well. It doesn't seem too modern to me, maybe it is the iron or something. There are only 4 chairs, but we dont' eat in her very often and I have plenty of other chairs I could bring in if needed. I am worried about the corners though. the cut off corners leaves double edges to jab at little ones as they go by. I really do like the rug so the glass would let it show more. OMG Oakleyok you crack me up about the legs under the table! Took me a minute to get what you meant. The furniture in there now is 20's fake jacobean oak. Not really fake, but a reproduction done in the 20s I guess you could say. feudal oak I think they called it. I also have this empire table in there... I would like to get away from the matchy look in the house and go for a more eclectic look but I don't really know how to get there.

I'm assuming the plywood is the same level as the finished wood? If so, and it's not inset, I'd do as others suggest and widen it bring it farther toward the wall. Looks like they centered the carpet on the stairs, then added the railing, which makes it off-center from the usable part of the stairs. If the plywood is inset and lower than the finished part, I'd see if the carpet layers can add more padding to make it level so you can widen the carpet over onto part of the finished floor. Of the 2 I think the patterned one is best, but I think you can do much better. I'd also go for more pattern, like Patrica shows or even a Persian style if it works with the rest of your furnishings/style. I'm afraid the light color would get dirty more quickly (or show the dirt at least).more brown:

I think the white looks great with your floors. Post your layout for the experts here (not me). They'll help you make the most of your small space.

And thanks for the layout post suggestion romy718. I posted my layout back in Sept. I also met w several architects, an engineer, and 4 kitchen design folks. Without question, the collective wisdom here was as valuable/ more so as any other advice.

(Honed Carrara? Soapstone? A "plain" warm white Ceasarstone? ... Anything that will not fight with my floor.)

I think a very plain soapstone or very neutral warm quartz (caesarstone oyster?) would be nice choices as they wouldn't fight with the floor.

I searched for terracotta tile kitchens on houzz cuz I thought it might share undertones with your tile. I know the kitchens are enormous but at least the color combos might translate?

I second the warmer quartz. It might help the floor look like it was planned. Here's Cesarstone Buttermilk with white cabs. All the quartz companies have something similar.

If you really want a wood accent, it needs to go to a darker more neutral shade. Soapstone might work, or the greeney tones might clash. It will be very slab specific.

Thanks, robotropolis those are great! I searched Houzz, but the first kitchen is new to me. These are lovely.

Given how petite my space is, maybe white on white would be best? The difficulty is compared to real terra cotta my tiles are not quite as rich/nuanced. Next to cooler whites/colors, the tiles tend to get dingy looking really fast and lose warmth. If that makes sense. And I know from years of reading the forum that doing white on white is not always so easy.

I have soapstone envy though. If my space were bigger and/or had better natural light, I would do ss without hesitation. I have a short L, only one 134" x45" counter. That's it. Maybe I'll get some dark grey/black paper and cover that counter space now to see what it feels like. My kids won't miss the paper. Ok. I am going to raid my kids art supply! Thanks so much for the inspiration.

Alas, I think ss isn't going to work. The dark is just really dark in my small space. I know ss has depth and warmth and nuance. But I really need light and light reflecting. And the ss green undertone would fight the tile, as live wire oak just reminded me. I was in denial. Thanks for the wake up. Maybe I could make it work. With enough time, determination, and money anything is possible. But I think my efforts are needed on so many other things.

May flowers the buttermilk looks promising. (I love that ceiling!) That is the feeling I want for my small space: warm, light, functional, happy.

Dove white it is. I will get some warm white quartz samples.
