Oh Cathy. I know that are are a great grandmother and have wowed him many times before. Sorry you were disappointed this time. Maybe if you had put a regular egg and a square one on his plate at the same time he might have noticed. Did you eventually bring it to his attention?

I am guessing that someone beat you to the punch, served him a square egg and he now thought it was no big deal...
or maybe he never noticed that eggs are normally oval?
Next time serve everyone else square eggs and make sure his is oval...

Sorry Cathy! But I'm LOL! The things we do to TRY to impress memories in our grandchildren's brains...don't ask me about singing and dancing in the rain or the time we hid 800 easter eggs!

Your Beau will likely remember the story and not the presentation! Write this down in a journal for him along with all the other funny and memory making fun. He will laugh one day about this and hold the journal dear to his heart. I think it's great to make memories. I try to do that everytime I'm with Maggie.

Try the square eggs again! I'm sure that he will 'get it' eventually.

I remember the square egg discussion here a while back. I am still trying to find one of those egg presses locally. (sigh)

I'd never even heard of square eggs!!! Dang it, there's another little gadget I want. Sorry your GS wasn't impressed. My grandmother never made me square eggs and I was always impressed with her cooking prowess. Don't worry, I'm sure you'll share lots of wonderful grammy memories.

You can soften eggs by soaking in White Vinegar.
I takes a couple of days.
Not sure of the time frame ? Did this when I was 12 years.

Then they can be put into a bottle, with the neck opening the size of a Quarter.

Rub some Veg. oil in the neck and slide the egg in.
Rinse a little with water and a little baking soda.
I a day, the egg will Harden again

Or you may be able to put the softened egg into a small Plastic container until it hardens.

That's where square cooked eggs come from. lol

Lou, I like that trick! I'll give it a try for next Wednesday's family dinner. First the pressure of the dinner---now tricks! When he's old enough to appreciate it, I'll do the drinking straw through a raw potato trick.

Vinegar Method

1. Submerge an egg, in its shell, in vinegar.
2. Check the egg periodically for firmness. When it becomes soft, take it out.
3. Immediately rinse the egg in tap water and squeeze it into an empty beer bottle.
4. Allow the egg to set; the shell will re-harden in the absence of vinegar.
5. You now have an egg in a bottle. The egg cannot be removed from the bottle without breaking either the egg or the bottle (or both).

Hard Boiled Method

1. Hard boil an egg.
2. Peel the egg.
3. Light a match, let it burn for two to three seconds, then extinguish it by shaking the match.
4. While the match is still smoking, quickly drop it into the bottom of the bottle. (Sometimes putting more twigs in the bottom to light works better, the match doesn't do it sometimes)
5. Place the egg on the rim of the bottle, and watch as the egg is sucked into the bottle like a vacuum.

I am not going to tell my hens what y'all are doing to eggs. They have enough to contend with without knowing their efforts are being thwarted by a bunch of people who don't appreciate the shape eggs come in naturally. Sheesh!

I'm surprised that everyone remembered that I'm sort of connected to this square egg stuff. My late father-in-law was the genius who made this as a lark. He was a very serious minded machine tool and die maker! The egg thing was a test of a new molding technique if my memory serves me. Anyway, I still have my original red one. Haven't purchased any others, and don't know where they can be found. I might give google a shot.

I love your effort mustangs what a good grandmother! I am waiting to teach my DGS his alphabet by using a squeeze bottle to make his name in pancakes, it's long enough and will include most of the alphabet!

I made my sister cry a few weeks ago when we were talking flowers, trees and such and I told her that I learned the various names of them from walking to and from church with our grandmother when I visited her in the summer. I was very young but still remember her pointing out all the flowers and trees in neighbors yards along the way. Those are my Grammy Memories. I am sure you are making memories you aren't even aware of.

You could always offer a "pre-sliced" banana: Sterilize a needle. Poke it into a ripe, unpeeled banana at 1/2 in intervals. Using the needle as a blade, slice through the fruit, but leave the skin intact. A dab of lemon juice on the needle marks should keep them from giving away the wound marks with browning. Tell him that the bananas are pre-sliced at the factory. Let him handle and peel it himself. He might be baffled...

And then there's the inside-the-egg egg scrambler, which allows you to make scrambled hard-boiled eggs, among its many other useful applications, which I haven't figured out yet (sue me, I like gadgets, and I have very low sales resistance to infomercials). You could tell him the hen was feeling a little frazzled the day she laid that one.

My best friend's dad was in the kitchen-gadget business, and he gave me my egg cubers back in the early '80s, so I've had lots of square eggs over the years. They've never stopped impressing me. Maybe kids are just too sophisticated nowadays.

Di, Blowing grass: We have St. Augustine grass which has broad blades. I pull a blade, put it between my thumbs, and blow. It makes a duck like sound that can be heard all over the neighborhood. Beau has Bahia grass; too skinny to blow.

I don't consider myself as one with a lot of time on my hands, but I see that I have another forum to follow.

All of my "cooking" is done straight from a cookbook, but the stuff you guys (er, gals) write about is much more interesting. I'm almost afraid to ask how to boil water! :))

dcarch, I did some googling about square tomatoes once I took a closer look at yours and saw that the were grown that way. Mine were cheater square tomatoes.
