Paczki....I got mine!

The girls have to be at school by 7:20. So this morning we ran out the door at 7am to get our paczki's at the bakery. Only one of my kids really like them. The other two do not like jelly or jelly type fillings. So they both got sprinkle donuts. But after dinner tonight DH, DD, and i will eat our paczki. Did you get yours? Do you make them yourself?

i got mine on sunday, they are gone already LOL. went back to publix last night to get some for co-workers and they were out. i was going to make beinets (sp?) but just don't have time during the week nights, i don't need them anyways lol. BTW how is paczki pronounced? i am of polish decent but somewhere along the line i started calling these pudge-kie's and can't remember how they are really pronounced and have no polish family down here. ~ liz

They came by with another load about an hour ago, second load of the day. I wasn't home when they dumped the first one. I told them to dump all they wanted to when they were here the first time. I grabbed the phone and dialed my neighbor, while I went out to the garden to stop them before they set up to dump. She didn't answer, so I let them go ahead and dump it, since I didn't know where to put it on her land. That would be asking for more hard feelings! I asked them to give her a call if they had more later and any she didn't want, dump it for me. They told me they would call her in a few hours and if they couldn't get in touch they would dump it in my garden.

jaro - rofl! There is a wooden utility pole in the alley (just out of sight in the photo) that would look much better if it was replaced with the M. pinus. I have been trying to train a virginia creeper up it to turn it into a tower of vine, but the creeper seems to have more sense than to attach to the creosote laden pole :-) So - here's what I have there now. I'll take a look in Chinatown to see if I can find any cheap bamboo or reed blinds that I can adapt for the top. If not, Ikea is still pretty cheap :-) With the angle of the sun and the fence behind it, the area it covers is perfect. Once I get some vines growing over it and draping off the front, it will provide enough shade and I think it'll look kind of neat. btw 0 there are crossbeams near the bottom, hidden by the leaves, and it's attached to the fence behind it, so it's really quite stable. I have to post another pic of the new privacy fence I built to make up for the fact that my old fence was no longer good enough with the tree gone. This fence doesn't provide much shade, except for in the right corner, but it works out well - I now have the shade I needed and I have a more sun on my tomatoes in the early morning. I might need to rig up some sort of extension of my shade trellis if I get many more shade plants, but I can do that without affecting the 'maters. It still looks kind of messy because I haven't sorted out what plants to put into nice pots there yet :-) BP

Marcy, considering that this plants has ALWAYS been inside, it was suddenly subjected to 40's and 50's with no acclimation period. I know they can take much cooler to cold, but I think it's kinda like summering outside. Takes some patience and common sense, which I am obviously lacking... Epsom Salts are made up of Magnesium sulfide. Many, many plants benefit from a dose of these in moderation. I learned about this because DH had foot surgery that required him to soak his foot two times a day, in Epsom Salts. I used the left over, cooled foot bath to water plants. For about a month. I had such fast, unusual growth on this particular sans, I was amazed!!! Seven new growth heads broke the surface, and it rebloomed, after blooming once in September it bloomed again in November. I also got new leaves on every single growth head in the pot. The down side of this overdose was that all the new leaves were scarred, with odd cream colored marks that these plants get when children carve their names into them with something sharp. I took the plant to my local Cactus & Succulent Society Meeting when Sans were the monthly succulent, and described what had happened. No one could tell me just what caused the scarring, although I know it was an excess of Epsom Salts. Do an online search 'plants & epsom salts' and see what you end up with. Amazing I tell you. Just don't over do it!

Paczki is the plural form (who can eat just one, after all?) and is pronounced 'poonch-key' but, if you're trying to stay on that diet, then you'll just want one paczek pronounced 'poon-chek'.

How interesting! I've been seeing them at the grocery store and couldn't figure out what they were or what the big deal was about Jelly filled donuts?

One store was also selling King Cake, but the baby was placed on top. Guess they didn't want anyone to sue if they ate the baby! lol

My Mom used to make a German version, Fastnacht Keukeles. I'm not sure of the spelling. All I know is they're delicious hot with powdered sugar.

They look like jelly donuts. My late German Uncle used to make them on New Year's Eve if they are the same thing.

I had never heard that name before either.Now had you said jelly donuts,i would have known what you were talking about!!! LOL I'm not crazy about the jelly filled ones either,but now the lemon---------------------yummo.

Oh I think I'd like them. We called them Bismarks here. I'll take lemon filled/powdered sugar coated, please.

Leslie I forgot to say that they were called Bismarks in Chicago years ago too.

If you have a Krispy Kreme near you they probably still make the jelly and the lemon ones.

When the kids were little we would make them. MMMM good. They didn't want fillings tho, just roll in cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar.
