With all the lint that collects in my dryer screen it's surprising that there is any fabric left in my clothes at all. Not all of the lint is caught by the lint filter, so I'm sure there is plenty built up in vent.

I ordered this free test kit to find out. You get two heat indicator strips so you can compare the temperature in your dryer to the temperature of the air coming out of the vent to find out if there is restricted air flow.

Lisa has posted her for quite some time and while I don't remember the post she is talking about I am sure others will. She isn't selling anything and told about a free test kit.

Lisa, I know my DD just had trouble with her dryer, it wouldn't turn on. She has a maintenance plan that will fix broken appliances. Long story short she didn't know she had a fuse that would blow if you had too much lint build up. The guy came to fix the dryer,called and told her what was wrong, did vac out the back of the dryer he said...she can't check cause doesn't have the right tools to take the back off. ANyway, he told her she'd need to get someone to clean the venting all the way to the outside. He stressed get a guy to do it. You know your husband? Nope sorry she says I am a widow...Dad? Nope, he lives 120 miles away...boyfriend?? again nope none. Finally he says do you have a brother???? LOL She finally said yep I will see if he can do it just to get him off the phone with her! She did some checking and asked some guy co workers how hard it was and if she needed a special tool for it. They told her what to get and she cleaned the outside first going down into the house, then took the hose off and cleaned it all going up to the outside with a dryer vent brush. She was so pleased with herself!! The guy (older man from the sounds of it) stressed you HAVE to have a guy do it! LOL
There are also cleaning tools you can hook up to a cordless drill that work slick for cleaning the vents.

There are companies that do this "Flocking". I imagine the lettering on the sign is a silly saying. She's just 15, LOL. Executives here, in mansions, have woke up to find 50 or more (depending on their age) in their yards. I think its a hoot. Wonder if 63 flamingos would fit in my little front yard? LOL. ISTM that there are two issues at work here. The first is that you are smelling unburnt gas in the house. Someone needs to find out why. Is there a leaky connection leading up to the dryer or is there an internal failure that's allowing unburnt gas to escape? Or, maybe, there's an insignificant amount of gas released when the dryer heater lights off. I'd expect the utility tech to determine which, though I wouldn't expect him to be able to do much about an internal failure other than advise you to call an appliance repair service. Secondly, and the one the utility company keyed on, there's a maximum allowable back-pressure for exhaust from the dryer (.4" WC or more, depending on total duct length) in order to keep exhaust gasses from remaining in the house. I doubt the technician measured it, but rather made an assumption based on the apparent design.

Megan Morrill-Denton, several people here offering a lot of good points. Since you've cleaned your ducting, I can't think of any other ways to improve drying, and you've mentioned you really don't have any length to the outside except 10" - though if you've got the 'corrugated' type ducting, straight galvanized might help a little. You've also mentioned that the ducting to the dryer isn't kinked... so I've no further help on that other than to suggest you use electric foil tape when you connect it to the dryer - we only had the clamp initially and it did a poor job of holding the duct leak-free to the dryer. You mentioned a cold floor... we had that issue - the whole room actually. When we pulled out our old dryer, I noted cold air flooding from the corrugated duct coming out from the wall (actually placed a baggie over it, taped it close to keep cold air from flooding into the room - the baggie stayed puffed with air until we replaced the outdoor vent cap). I can't really speak for the Heartland style outdoor vent other than to say once we installed that, I noticed the baggie no longer inflated with air from the outside. That was a plus for us. We previously had the slat-style outdoor vent. As dadoes mentioned, it needs painted if you don't want it to stick out like a sore thumb (it's rather big), and I used a can of plastic approved Krylon Fusion paint from Lowe's for ours. Keeping any part of your ducting and vent cap clear of lint is important, and reduces fire hazards - sounds like you are doing this. Good luck on your situation.

The Tivoli condominiums in Siesta Key, Florida were built in the 70s, all with non-ducted dryers in the kitchen. I remodeled a kitchen, eliminated the stacked washer/dryer, and installed a full size dryer on the outside wall. The full size washer was installed next to the sink under the countertop. We had to get permission from the condo association for the new vent to penetrate the front wall and just met the code requirement that the vent be more than 36" from a window. I didn't find out about that rule until I was done. Whew. The stackable was where the refrigerator is now. And yes, the countertop was pulled forward 3" or so.

If you had searched the forum for "dryer vent" you would have found the thread Lisa was referring to, which is linked below. Also, if you check her member page you would see she's been here since 2001.

I don't know where I was that day cause I didn't remember the post...course with my memory lately there is lots I don't remember. LOL I knew Lisa wasn't a spammer though for sure!
Those dryer vents get full fast, and you'd be amazed what falls into the bottom of the dryer besides lint! LOL I know a gal that must not ever check pockets before doing laundry.....DH seen the inside of hers, pony tail holders, coins,keys,candy wrappers, $20 bills! LOL

Well, Lisa's post reminded me to order a vent cleaning kit.

One of my biggest fears is a fire caused by a backed up vent and the dryer heat.

For some reason our vent hose dangles down from the dryer and then up to the vent. I look at that piece dragging on the floor and wonder how much lint is backed up in there. Every once in a while I'll notice a huge burp of lint on the ground outside the vent. I think the dryer must be gagging!..LOL.

I have the long vent brush for getting the lint out from way down deep. It works great. My neighbors dryer caught on fire because of the lint build up...since then I clean mine out about once a week.

Wow-$20 bills in the vent??? I guess someone has been raiding mine. I do occasionally find a couple of bucks in the washing machine though. I forgot to put the link in-sorry-I was in a rush getting all 3 kids off to school!

NO not in the vent Lisa...in the bottom of the dryer. Dh took it apart to clean. The items fall down that little crack by the door and tub.

My daughter works for a fire restoration company, and she is always after me to clean my dryer vents. It is a leading cause of house fires.

Our dryer just wasn't heating properly. We bought a new one. When they pulled the old one out after disconnecting the dryer vent it was full of grass clippings, so was the entire length of the hose. Now my house keeper has my dryer which works better than the new one. And we have a cap on the outside where nothing can get in to build a nest.

it is my professional opinion that a dryer should not be installed anywhere but a outside wall . so that you do not have a long vent to clean..
