Someone's Day Didn't Start Out Too Well!

Someone in this household started out to go to work and dropped his gallon jug of iced tea he's bought and cracked it. He comes back in and has lost half of it. I asked him why he didn't leave the two jugs he bought in the car, instead of carrying them in the house, downstairs and put them in my refrigerator. Oh they might freeze. I doubt it as it wasn't that cold and it would be just overnight. He has decided he isn't going to work because he didn't see any cars go down our road. I told him, I saw two go past as I was sweeping off the walk. Well, he isn't going. He is grumpy! Do you want breakfast, I guess. I fried him eggs, bacon and toast. He gets his second jug of iced tea and heads out. I guess he went to work. He didn't say. So goes my day. I am happy! How is your day going?

Mine is going good so far. Raining and 48 degrees, going to get colder by this afternoon.
My Vasculitis that I have been battling for 3 weeks is getting better!!! I did not know I had it, thought it was just something new from psoriasis. I have to wrap my legs in saran wrap 3 times a week, put steroid ointment on my legs and take prednisone....but I am getting better!!! The red blood blisters are fading!!! No one stares at my legs in horror when I go to the store and I refuse to wear long pants just to make others feel good about seeing my legs....LOL (I wear capri's a lot)
Today is a good day! I have rode my exercise bike, walked a mile with the tapes...I feel good..!

In Michigan we direct sowed them in a small rich bed then when they were around 3" to 4" tall we transplanted them and they did fine. Here in Texas we plant them in the fall for a winter crop. They are tough so if you didn't damage the plant they should recover from the transplant shock. Don't give up on them until you have to go for it.

The difference in success from year to year involves so many variables. I've been WS for 6 years now, and even with that amount of experience, the differences from year to year, do vary every year. My success rate has always been at least 95%; success defined by me as germination of any kind in a container, not the number of seedlings germinated in each container, I do try to keep records as to where the seeds came from. Such things as trades, commercial seeds and what co. they came from, my own collected seeds. From year to year, not all seed will germinate the same, even for me. I always put out the perennials first. Being in New England, I do have a few months to get them out and get the cold that they need, BUT, 2 years ago we had the strangest winter. 60 to near 70 degrees in January and I know people that had WS their seeds in Dec. and had seeds germinating in January because it was so warm. Those plants didn't survive. I had a late start that winter and ended up not getting my seeds out till mid February and they germinated fine for me, I didn't have any germination too early. So for me, I learned that I can start in mid Feb and it won't be too late for me. BUT, I've also had some serious cold snaps as late as mid May and if I had not covered my tender annuals several nights in a row, I would have lost all of them. So variables are major things to deal with. Weather is a real problem. One year I had 8 inches of rain over 2 days and all my containers where floating in the backyard and the ducks where swimming right beside and around them. Most survived, but there where some that survived the floods, only to be eaten by the invasion of slugs that I had never had before in 29 years living in my home. When we sow seeds that we traded for, we take a risk. Where the seeds collected when they where ripe or where they too early? If too early then the seeds will not be viable and will not germinate for you. The same thing can happen with commercial bought seeds as well. I've had my share of "no shows" in containers from commercial purchased seeds from big name seed companies. I've gotten my money back, but still had no plants from the seeds I planned on. Watering can be a problem, which goes with the weather. this year has been the craziest weather I have seen in 28 years living in my home. We've gone from freezing temps to 80's and 90's, with temps not staying stable for more than 2-3 days at most. 80's and 90's in early April are not normal where I am, but we've had them. We've had frosts long after it should not be happening and may happen again tonight. I've never had to water my containers before the last week in April to the first week in May at the earliest. This year I have had to water every other day since the first week in April. Germination for me has been very eradic as well. Same seeds, same kind of containers, sowed the same day from the same collected, traded or commercial packet and containers are germinating days and weeks apart. My datura are usually about 4 inches tall now, and most have not germinated yet. They need steady 70 degree soil temp to germinate but they haven't gotten it. And, we have not had a lot of rain. lots of days with rainy showers that moisten the top of the containers but not enough to soak into them. Over 6 years of WS, I've learned to just go with the flow. Always expect good germination in terms of container numbers, sow more seeds than I will need in more containers, which usually will cover the beds planted. Assume that some will not germinate and that's just the way mother nature is. Remember that no matter how you look at it, you will have more plants than you would have if you had to buy them and just WS next year and keep going. The only way you will have a sure fire way to have every plant that you want, no matter what, is to buy them. That's far too expensive for me to deal with, considering the number of beds that i have to fill and keep filling. WS does it for me and I wouldn't do it any other way. Fran

Dawn, sounds like you had a good year, all things considered! Our spring/summer garden was fairly pitiful. The only thing that produced was salad greens, walking onions, and garlic. We got only a gallon or ywo of summer squash before it went kaput. Tomatoes never did get it right after the rainy setbacks but we did get a decent flush this fall, enough for several days of good eating. Melons, not so much. Beans & cukes were a complete bust. The fall garden is seems to be doing better. Peas, cabbages, and cukes are showing promise, summer squash has just started putting lots of goodies, and salad greens are up a almost ready to start cutting. Walking onions and herbs are doing well now and I'll be setting out the garlic before much longer. The chiles finally started taking off in late summer so we've had a decent harvest of those and they're continuing. Spring = Fail. Fall = Much Better. Diane

Did you have any luck? I had a contractor apply Flood solid-stain (an oil/latex product), it's still slightly tacky 2 weeks later. I don't know what the answer is, other than just waiting...

Hope your day gets better! Last week I left my liquid medicine for dialysis in my car and iot froze solid. Won't do that again!

Sitting here waiting for the 2nd round of snow to come through the next couple of days. I keep directing it to go to Sue's house one state west of me, but it doesn't listen. I just keep praying that my power stays on and that I continue to have heat. Some in my county have been without since last weekend's blast.

Kinda slow moving this morning.. Hubby had a doctor's appointment this morning so he has been out and about. I think I will get my sweeper ran and finish a load of laundry. Maybe sew some later...

I went into the grocery yesterday and picked up what I needed to get me through the snow that is coming in.. I am so tired of all of this.. I am ready for Spring... How about you??

If I never saw snow again, it would be too soon. This is our third day of snow. My neighbor cleared my drive yesterday and again today. Luckily I only pay him $10 a pop. I used to pay $25 to a company and couldn't afford to keep doing that.

Well I'm great....thanks for asking! It's been raining for weeks I think, and cold...but today we have beautimous sunshine!!!!! It's not supposed to last long, but it is wonderful to see! In a few minutes I will be outside in it and plan to stay out there in spite of the cold!! Princess Posie and I cuddled in the bright morning sunshine early...she purred and purred, so I think she was enjoying it too!!

Good day...no work..well I got a call but declined..LOL

and have been cleaning out the garage in anticipation of Friday's delivery of my new dryer...the matching washer is being made as we speak..so it's not coming for another month..

The sun is shinning..it's wonderfully brisk out there..and is perfect for not over heating while hauling and trashing, and sweeping stuff...

Just listed 3 things on freecycle too...I have a lot more..plus a run to the recycle and a drop off at the thrift store...and then there will almost be enough room in there to dance. :o)

We have at least 2 new inches of snow with more continuously falling. I almost got stuck in my parents' driveway at 2:00. NOT FUN! It's been years since I did that one. Took me at least 15 minutes to get out. The drive is downhill and sloped downhill to the north, besides. Dad had plowed it, but with the new snow on top, all my beast wanted to do was slide sideways to the slope.
Then it took me an extra 10 minutes to get home. I am in for the night unless someone else does the driving! I usually don't mind driving in this stuff, but I've had enough for today.

The weather folks can't quite decide if, when we will get our next snow. Never would be my wish. First it was going to be this afternoon; then it was going to be this morning. My driveway was barely white early this AM, then it melted. Had a little sun, now it is dreary looking, I will say though, they have been really good at getting it right up until today.

Right now I'm taking a tea break from cleaning the bathroom.

Speaking of tea, Sue. I'm surprised your D?H didn't find some way to twist things around and make his problem all your fault!
