Will you watch the Winter Olympics?

When Vancouver had the Olympics in 2010, we were glued to the tv. The winter sports are so fast and are so exciting.

I'll be curious to watch these Olympics to see that everything is finished in time and ready to go. It seems that there is still a lot to be done in Sochi to be ready.

I am watching quite a bit of the Olympics, but we love to watch sports anyways at our house. I enjoy watching some of the sports we never get to see like handball and field hockey. I taped the opening ceremony and fast forwarded through all the history cr**. Not real interesting to me to be honest. Sortof like Harry Potter meeting Mary Poppins there for awhile! Anyways, my only comment on the opening ceremony was why did the choose "Hey Jude" as the finale number? "Take a bad song and make it better", Not one word of inspiration in those lyrics. Surely Sir Paul and/or the Beatles had written a more inspiring song they could have played as the ceremony finale. I found it funny when they panned the crowd most of the athletes didn't know the words or weren't even singing along - definitely saw the generation gap with that song!!

When I consider that all of the participants have trained long and hard, usually with little help and that the margins between winning an losing are very thin, I find it rather hard to develop enthusiasm. As only the gold medalists in certain attractive sports will go on to become multi-millionaires through endorsements, that doesn't turn me on much. And when I remember that the bosses that run the Olympic show live high on the hog ... but the peons that do the work (and take the injuries) don't ... it reduces my enthusiasm even more. Add to which that the whole shebang is costing 6 - 7 billion or more ... when about a sixth of the world is permanently hungry (and have minimal education and lousy healthcare) the thing seems to me to lack certain validity. Not only that - a major part of the enterprise is financed by various governmental agencies ... ... while some of the major official sponsors of this enterprise that's claimed to be greatly related to health and fitness ... ... are Coca Cola and Macdonalds ... ... why should massive amounts of governmental dollars (when the governments are darned near broke) go to subsidize these private enterprise agencies? Why do they need welfare? Also - I'd like to see even a small portion of that official funding go to support amateur sport, encouraging the mass of our youth to get more involved with fitness and better health. You've hard how increasing numbers of our kids are suffering from juvenile diabetes? Overweight? It seems to me that we've got our priorities upside down. In addition, reports of the quarter-finals of our men's hockey playdowns (conducted on the part of the Canadians largely by the high-priced professionals) were splashed all over the front pages of some of our major newspapers ... ... while the report of the women's hockey team winning their gold medal ... ... was displaced (relegated?) to small pictures on about page 4. Plus - one of the major sports in which the women wanted to be included - was it cross-coutry skiing? - was not allowed to participate at all ... ... but the men's sure did! It seems to me that that stinks. ole joyful P.S. There was a report the other day that the cost is about $4,000. to every Canadian taxpayer. o j

This would have been a bad year for Chicago. Lake Michigan did not freeze over this winter and the nearest "hill" that could have been used is a high mound of garbage. Laugh if you will. I have seen two land fills used for a winter sports hill. The land fill is allowed to pile up. It is compacted as it accumulates and eventually, a sizeable 'hill' resutls. You can not build a permanent structure on such a hill because it settles too much. They could hold events like 1) snow shoveling, 2) push a car out of the snowbank, 3) dodge traffic, 4) Asian carp catching, and pub cruising.

I always watch what is available here. With just antennae tv, it isn't much... but I love watching the Olympics.

We watch every night. After they are over we wonder what are we going to watch. We were suppose to be away for a few days and I have them ready to record but the weather probably will keep us home.

Sometimes I watch them. Might a little more this time due to being 'weathered' in again starting tonight. I pray there are no incidents.

I love the Olympics but I hate the TV coverage. Way too many ads, things out of sequence, lopsided attention on the Americans, editing, etc.

If there is a spectacular performance, I'll try to catch that, and now with YouTube, it's easy to find (did anyone watch Jason Brown in the US figure skating championships? WOW!).

But the TV coverage is horrid.

Some, especially the opening and closing ceremonies. But I feel as Sushipup does, especially concerning all the attention on American athletes--boring. The final skating competitions are usually quite nice to watch.

Yes! Love the winter games, we'll watch as much as we can. Probably DVR a lot so we can zoom thru the commercials. Also love the stories about our athletes.

I love watching the Olympics. I'm in Vancouver and honestly I can't believe it's been four years already. I'll try to watch them but I think the time zones are going to be a bit of a problem especially here on the west coast.

We LOVE watching the winter olympics!!! I'm smiling about the complaint of "too much American" coverage because we're in NY but can only get the Canadian broadcast -- we complain that it's too much Canadian coverage! LOL!

Go Jason Brown! I think that he and Gracie Gold both have a chance to medal. :)

Speaking of US athletes, is Apollo speed-skating this year? I haven't heard of him for a long time, and he is fantastic!

Jasdip, he'll be there for NBC as analyst on speedskating, skiing and snowboarding - not competing.

I'll miss watching him skate, became a fan of short track the years he competed.
