Do you Prefer the Summer or Winter Olympics?

I've been loving the Olympics. Watching the speed, skill and danger of the skiing (all forms), speed-skating, snowboarding, etc, is fantastic.

These athletes perform with such reckless abandon without any thought to their own *mortality*.

Summer olympics don't do it for me. Swimming, gymnastics, track and field, doesn't have the same mesmerizing effect on me.

Oh I agree.winter over summer always.
Another thing about the summer Olympics is simply...it's summer. I am not going to be sitting in front of a TV set watching, when I could be outside enjoying the sun and warm air after being stuck inside all winter.

Winter for me to. I used to downhill ski and I love to watch the skiers but I also enjoy the ice skating. I watched the last summer Olympics only because a local gal, Shawn Johnson, is a gymnast and won the Gold Medal.

I would water most everything, though perhaps not cacti. But certainly Aeoniums.. .they need a lot of water in the winters anyway, and this year they sure aren't getting it from the weather. In your climate, I doubt you kill much of anything by watering, and most plants will like it (Agaves for the most part will appreciate it). Jades certainly like water this time of year.

This would have been a bad year for Chicago. Lake Michigan did not freeze over this winter and the nearest "hill" that could have been used is a high mound of garbage. Laugh if you will. I have seen two land fills used for a winter sports hill. The land fill is allowed to pile up. It is compacted as it accumulates and eventually, a sizeable 'hill' resutls. You can not build a permanent structure on such a hill because it settles too much. They could hold events like 1) snow shoveling, 2) push a car out of the snowbank, 3) dodge traffic, 4) Asian carp catching, and pub cruising.

I wish I could have it all out at once because I'm prone to, out of sight, out of mind syndrome. But, I try to have mostly 3-season things. I have to have my at-home fleece in winter, and some short-sleeved things for the worst of summer, but otherwise I wear a lot of the same stuff 9 months of the year. Since work is air-conditioned and I'm kinda cold-natured, I wear wool or wool-blend slacks mostly year round and then wear warm or cool tops depending on the season. I just about have enough drawer space for all foldable casual clothes, but some drawers are "prime" space, and so I shift some things with the seasons to be more accessible. One thing I hated was taking things off and on hangers to fold and put up. I still have to do that some, but I found that I could use an underbed storage bin that my shortsleeved blouses fit in while still on plastic hangers. So in summer it holds fleece casual wear because that's so bulky it needs the big box;in winter I rotate them into a drawer and put my summer hanging short-sleeved stuff in the underbed box. I have some good winter sweaters for work that I do fold and put up in another box to be moth-proof, and so I take them out and give them the hanging space formerly used for summer blouses. (Sacrilege--I hang my sweaters!) Kinda weird but it fits which things I want hanging and which in drawers and has been pared down to just about these 4 switcheroo's.

Definitely winter. Although I used to enjoy the diving and gymnastics, and probably would again if I took the time to watch.

I wouldn't want to choose, but I do think the winter has more "thrill factor". I love both.

Each has their attractions I guess but winter has more for me. Between bobsled, luge, skiing, skating, snowboarding etc, there's just so many more possibilities of someone wiping out and flopping down a hill like a dogfish out of water.

I do appreciate xertain events of gymnastics though. Some big flops happen there too and there's a lot of practice involved and talent too.

I never watch the Olympics for very long at a time. If something is on that is of interest I'll watch it, but I don't schedule my day by it. NBC isn't making much off from me.

More Winter than Summer, but I love to watch the swimming events of the Summer Olympics.
This year I'm ready for all the luge events to be over. All the crashes are so upsetting to me. I mean all events on that track, not just luge.

I have a slight preference for summer Olympics just because gymnastics is my favorite of all Olympic events. But I enjoy the fast, outdoor winter events, like luge and bobsled, freestyle moguls (very cool) and downhill skiing. I *loved* watching Shawn White and the other snowboarders and watching Lindsey Vann ski.

I prefer summer. Honestly, I don't watch much of either.

When I consider that all of the participants have trained long and hard, usually with little help and that the margins between winning an losing are very thin, I find it rather hard to develop enthusiasm. As only the gold medalists in certain attractive sports will go on to become multi-millionaires through endorsements, that doesn't turn me on much.

And when I remember that the bosses that run the Olympic show live high on the hog ... but the peons that do the work (and take the injuries) don't ... it reduces my enthusiasm even more.

Add to which that the whole shebang is costing 6 - 7 billion or more ... when about a sixth of the world is permanently hungry (and have minimal education and lousy healthcare) the thing seems to me to lack certain validity.

Not only that - a major part of the enterprise is financed by various governmental agencies ...

... while some of the major official sponsors of this enterprise that's claimed to be greatly related to health and fitness ...

... are Coca Cola and Macdonalds ...

... why should massive amounts of governmental dollars (when the governments are darned near broke) go to subsidize these private enterprise agencies?

Why do they need welfare?

Also - I'd like to see even a small portion of that official funding go to support amateur sport, encouraging the mass of our youth to get more involved with fitness and better health.

You've hard how increasing numbers of our kids are suffering from juvenile diabetes? Overweight?

It seems to me that we've got our priorities upside down.

In addition, reports of the quarter-finals of our men's hockey playdowns (conducted on the part of the Canadians largely by the high-priced professionals) were splashed all over the front pages of some of our major newspapers ...

... while the report of the women's hockey team winning their gold medal ...

... was displaced (relegated?) to small pictures on about page 4.

Plus - one of the major sports in which the women wanted to be included - was it cross-coutry skiing? - was not allowed to participate at all ...

... but the men's sure did!

It seems to me that that stinks.

P.S. There was a report the other day that the cost is about $4,000. to every Canadian taxpayer.
