The best eating week of the year is about to start!

Every summer we spend a week on the shore of Lake Tahoe, CA with some long-time friends. We talk, kayak, drink, play boules, knit (some of us), smoke cigars (some of us), hike, do fixit chores on their cabin, mind or don't mind the kids. And cook, and drink, and eat.

N____ is a French geneticist, and makes old-school French dishes from her treasured little pocket notebook, in which she's spent decades accumulating recipes from her mother and aunts in that loopy French cursive. Last year I begged her to let me photocopy it. Non. I forgive her, for her perfect tartes, worthy of any Parisian vitrine. T____ is a home-schooling Northern California earth-mother who always introduces me to humble, subtle foods that I've overlooked, or mentally classified with granola and brown rice. My polenta kick a while ago was thanks to her. W_____'s specialty is perfectly grilled meat. He always brings a cooler of beef. He brings the cigars, too. A_____, our hostess and resident piano teacher and outdoorswoman, is always anxious on her night to cook, and her meals turn out wonderfully. She made the best brisket I've ever had. N_____ (#2) is half East Coast blue blood, half French free-spirit, and cooks sort of like Alice Waters would, if Alice Waters were very mellow and a little bit stoned. She's nearly a dead ringer for Katharine Ross, too. With ten adults and nine kids, there's constantly cooking, serving, and cleaning to be done. I'm never so domestic as on this week, and I like it. Even doing the dishes.

Some years I've gone down with photocopied recipes and special ingredients, one year I hauled down two woks and jars of made-ahead sauces. This year feels more impromptu. We'll go to the farmers' market, see what's good, and just wing it. I'm not going to stick to my diet, but will lean more light and ''California'', and less ''big production''. Well, I may grab some spices from the kitchen so I can try a couple Indian dishes. And I have been thinking about bringing a pressure cooker . . .

So, if I'm wholly absent for a while, or conversely if I start posting desperate pleas for help, or pop up in WFD again - that's why. I'm quite excited.

John, it sounds like you're going to Heaven! What a fun sounding group of friends you have, and a neat tradition.

I don't have anything like that. It's more like we have a day here or there that we go all out. I, unfortunately, don't have many friends that like to cook, but I do have a friend or two that likes to eat, but don't have much time to cook, so I enjoy feeding them from time to time. It's sheer pleasure to cook for people that enjoy food. I bet this week will be that and more for you. Be safe and have fun!

Tea Brack recipe first, then how to make homemade buttermilk. -Grainlady TEA BRACK (source: Irresistible Irish Breads - magazine article by Deborah Krasner) Brack, an Irish word for bread, is often used when referring to fruited mixtures. Tea Brack is a traditional tea bread which is an easy version of barm brack. Makes 1 loaf. 2 c. dark seedless raisins or dried currants (I use currants) 1-1/2 c. firmly packed dark-brown sugar 1-1/2 c. strong brewed tea, chilled 1/4 c. rum (I use 1/8 c.) 2 c. unsifted all-purpose flour 1-1/2 t. baking powder 1/2 t. ground cinnamon 1/2 t. ground nutmeg 1/2 t. salt 1 large egg, at room temperature, lightly beaten 1. Several hours or the night before baking, in large glass bowl, combine raisins/currants, brown sugar, tea, and rum. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and let sit overnight. 2. Heat oven to 325°F. Grease an 8-1/2x4-1/2-inch loaf pan and line with waxed paper. Grease waxed paper. 3. In medium-size bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Slowly beat flour mixture and the egg into raisin mixture just until combined to form a batter. 4. Pour batter into greased loaf pan. Bake brack 1-1/2-hours until browned and cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on wire rack 5-minutes. Turn brack out of pan and remove waxed paper. Cool brack completely on wire rack. Grainlady note: I use two 7-1/2x3-1/2-inch loaf pans or three 5-3/4x3-3/4-inch loaf pans and reduce the baking time accordingly. This is a very moist bread - more currants than bread, almost. I like the smaller pans so I can cut the bread into thin slices that don't fall apart. If you make it in a regular loaf pan, the slices tend to split and fall apart. -------------------------- I use a large amount of buttermilk when it comes to baking on St. Patrick's Day, so I make a homemade version of it using information from "Natural Meals In Minutes" by Rita Bingham. I use a non-instant powdered milk, but regular commercial milk works VERY well. Homemade Buttermilk To a 1-quart canning jar add 1/2 c. buttermilk and fill the jar with regular milk OR reconstituted powdered milk. Note: You can use commercial buttermilk as the starter, or a reconstituted liquid made from powdered buttermilk, or buttermilk from a former batch of homemade buttermilk - your choice. Stir well and cover (I use a plastic lid designed to use with canning jars). Let stand in a warm place (at least 80°F) until clabbered, about 12-18-hours. Stir until smooth. Refrigerate. Grainlady note: I keep mine in my oven with the light on. The temperature at the opposite side of the oven from the light is about 80°F. You can use homemade buttermilk from a previous to culture the milk for the next batch. Just make sure you use it within 2-weeks. Older buttermilk doesn't work as well as newer buttermilk. If you've ever used reconstituted powdered buttermilk, it's rather insipid, thin, and tasteless compared to commercial buttermilk. The homemade buttermilk is more like commercial buttermilk.

I can't think of anything more appropriate than brownies. Alice B. Toklas recipe, to be precise. That's more food-friendly than Look Alike Day or Volunteer Recognition Day. Yeah, and Hitler's birthday. Go for the brownies. Which is probably what your kids were hinting for in the first place! Oh, wait, you can celebrate the cuisine of Magnolia Thunderpussy. Congrats to the champions! I remember when I was in Paris, I was overwhelmed by the variety of very fresh seafood. So I bought a pot and an electric stove, smuggled into my hotel room and cooked. (With the bathroom exhaust fan going) With fresh seafood, all you need is salt and pepper, and a length of baguette. dcarch

Another fun topic. Well, until recently we did meatless main dishes a couple nights a week and the rest of the nights could be most anything like pasta, stir-fry, roasts, casseroles, tacos, pizza, typical meat/potatoes dishes, yada yada. We had been working on having more meatless meals and adding more fresh veggies but weren't fanatical about it. A recent health scare in the family has made me a fanatic so we are in flux on our meals and I feel like I'm learning to cook again from scratch as we move more fully into meatless, plant-based, whole-foods, low-fat cooking. I'm not claiming or striving to be 100% vegan. We still eat seafood. Our freezer is too full of the yumminess of salmon, halibut, clams, cod, crab, shrimp and tuna. So we're limiting seafood to 2-3 meals per week, and eliminating dairy (except a half butter/half grapeseed oil spread that we use sparingly). I feel like I'm learning to cook again. I have always made a lot of soups so now I'm just doing them without meat and using beans/lentils/dried peas instead. This means I'm playing with different seasoning blends and flavor profiles. I'm also experimenting with different bean-based fillings for things like tacos/burritos/wraps and faux-burgers/loafs. I've never been much for buying processed foods so I'm avoiding the store-bought faux-meat items and learning to make healthier versions of things like that myself. And I'm not trying to get them to taste like meat. Just as a well flavored, non-meat protein. I really don't miss meat. Wasn't that much of a fan of it anway. DH is having more of a problem with the adjustment but he's the one that needs it most so I just keep trying to find things that satisfy him. I was making a lot of our own bread before so now just bake more to eliminate store-bought and have been experimenting with how much I can add in the way of things like ground up nuts, seeds, steel-cut oats, bulgur, etc., to increase the nutritional value of the bread while still getting a nice bread for sandwiches or toasting. So my baking center isn't getting as much use as it was before for sweets but it's sure handy for getting the bread done! Breakfast is always a green smoothie, packed with greens and superfoods. DH usually also has some steel-cut oats, bulgur, muesli with nut milk, or similar to fill him up but the smoothie satisfies me until lunch. Lunch and dinner are kinda interchangeable and can be salad, soup, stir-fry, sandwich/wrap, taco/burrito, "meat" loaf, seafood dish, veggie pastas with veggie sauces (thank goodness for my spiralizer), veggie chips, hummus, etc., always with some kind of veggies whether the salad and/or a side as well. Desserts tend to be sorbets made with 100% fruit/berries but I'm ready to branch out. I made my first black-bean brownies a week ago. Pretty good but I think Laughable's suggestion for the non-baked ones sounds even better. Will try that next. I'm trying out a lot of different types of vegetables that I've never bought before. I've had to laugh at myself when I've gotten home with something I can't identify. Seriously. I need to take photos of the sign at the store to help me remember. Menus vary depending on what veggies I have on hand, what looks like it's starting to turn and needs eaten NOW, and such. I read recipes online like crazy for ideas but I rarely have all the exact same ingredients so I do a lot of substituting and experimenting to see what works and what doesn't. I don't think I've ever made anything the same way twice but I'm having fun with it Fearless in the kitchen, that's me, lol. Side benefits. I just plain feel better eating this way. I used to have a lot of heartburn and other gastro-intestinal problems. Gone. Nada! No odd headaches out of the blue either. I've always been one that has to practically starve myself to lose weight. Yup, even when I'm training for long bike rides and alpine scrambling. And now all my clothes are getting loose without me starving myself or even being hungry at all. I'm quite satiated. And I don't have any cravings for sweets which is crazy because I have always had the ultimate sweet tooth. Go figure. Love the side benefit of losing weight without even trying. First time in my life that has happened. LOVE!

Oh wow, that sounds like a wonderful time, have fun and take pictures! I'll watch for you on WFD.

We never took vacation as a child, other than visiting Great-Grandmother in Canada. She had a little shack with a dirt floor and a wood stove, so there wasn't a lot of anything going on except my brother and I took turns splitting wood for her for winter and I always got poison ivy.

As an adult I didn't go much of anywhere either because we owned the bar and grille until I was in my 40s and started taking the girls places. Then I got divorced and couldn't afford to go anywhere, LOL.

Have a great time and ejoy your friends and your children. Too bad about that notebook, though, could you get her drunk and photocopy it? (grin)

Sounds like heaven to me!!!! The only thing that might make it better would be if it were on an ocean beach.
I don't know why...but I have no friends who are even slightly as passionate about adventurous cooking as I am....and living alone...I feel a huge lack of a "cooking week". Perhaps that's why I enjoy cooking church meals even though it's mostly same-old same-old.
The closest I come to a cook and eat-a-thon is when I go to my son's and we play together in the kitchen...or when he comes here.

My big hurrah is the holidays (of course) and also pot lucks where I fancy up all sorts of home grown dishes.
We also have a cabin at the Russian River and have many family gatherings there. The grill is always the first choice, but I always cook the sides and breakfast. Nancy

I am seriously envious of someone like you who has so many friends and especially ones that are so eclectic and are serious 'foodies' in their own separate genre's. How cool is that!??? I hope you have a wonderful time and it sounds like the possibility of you not is pretty much non-existent! Have a great time John!

That sounds like so much fun. Those are the very best kind of vacations. When I was a kid we spent a month at the beach in New Jersey every year. There were other families around that we knew and we would go to the beach with them, but not cook. My poor mom would cook for all five of us the same as if we were home, except the kitchen wasn't half as nice. As a red head, she burned easily in the sun and hated the sand.

Later my parents built a new house and installed a big pool. After that we always stayed home. It was nice to have a pool, but not nearly as fun as those family vacations to the beach.

We took our kids to the beach every year too. Not much cooking going on then! Now I travel by myself and never cook.

You are creating great memories for the kids.

Dinner last night with our friends in Berkeley.

I found a great, if scuzzy, Indian market and got spices to make

Chicken in a yoghurt and sour cream sauce, lots of cumin, coriander, onions, garlic, cream.

Beef browned, then braised with tomato, peaches, cumin, coriander, red pepper, onions, garlic, dark beer.

Got to Tahoe late tonight and dinner was Zacharys' deep dish pizza, wine, and blackberry cobbler on the beach.

Sorry for the blurry pics and brief description - I'm tired and headed for bed . . .

On the road home, after a great week.

On the food front, and especially on the drink front, our group seemed to be a bit ''lite'' this year. Not as Bacchannalian as in some prior years. That was okay, I actually stuck to my diet. How? More in a sec.

For dinners, there were a couple of curries, one evening of Zachary's deep dish pizza, and one night out at a Basque restaurant in Nevada. Grill night was some perfectly grilled kabobs (W____). There were various pastas, including a lemon linguine and a spaghetti carbonara (SWMBO). T_____ won the ''simplest tasty'' award with an entire salmon fillet poached in salt, pepper, onion and vermouth. We had chicken thighs stuffed and trussed, different variations: gorgonzola & walnut, brie & apple, roast veg & salami, jalapeno & jack cheese (one of the N____'s). There was chicken in a cream, corn, and capers sauce, and a boeuf bourguignon. We had a risotto, lots of salads and salsa, roast veg, gallons of Peet's coffee, quinoa salad, fried chicken skins, tiramisu, crumbles, ice cream, lots of peaches and plums, cheese, bread, etc.

And only 12 bottles of wine for the week, part of a fifth of scotch, two cigars, and some tequila. Weird - normally we go through a couple cases of wine at least. Like I said, everyone was watching their health, at least a little.

I guess that's part of getting older. As is long talks about raising teen girls (how do you decide which parties they may go to?) and the aging and passing of our parents. Much of each has been going on in our group this year (my parents are fine, thanks).

So, I know the mystery is, how do you stick to a diet on a vacation week centered around friends and food? Partly by cooking a lot, since the more I cook, the less I eat. Also partly by cheating with exercise. I didn't really stick to 1200 cal/day. Instead, if I did X cal of activity that day, I ate 1200 + X. Turns out that if one hikes 4 hours, or kayaks 3 hours, well, that is a significant ''X''.

Now, that's exercise I enjoy. Paddling on a glass lake at dawn, walking through a high mountain meadow filled with wildflowers - lots better than a treadmill in a smelly gym. Alas, I don't live in the High Sierra.

Here in the Northeast, I am so weary of bombarded by 24-hour non-stop coverage by all TV and media of people's flooded basements, and downed trees on parked cars. It is so refreshing to see your beautiful pictures of your vacation.

Love that picture of family and friends dinning on the beach at sunset. Just like in the movies.
