Where I live they changed the names but the actual weights were still stated on the box, so you could see that "large", which was formerly 60g, is now 50g. Do your cartons have the egg weight on them?

colleenoz, I never paid any attention to know there was a weight on them. I'll look in the morning just to see, but don't know what the weights would be if it does..LOL. I was going purely on the looks of them and they sure look smaller to me.

Pretty sure the old "large" in the US was 2oz.

Interesting! I've never looked for the weights either, so I pulled out the carton to check. There is way more informatin about te carton being made from recycled paper than there is about the contents LOL!

My "large" eggs, which do look like normal large eggs to me, are as follows:

Given the small difference in average volume between medium and large eggs, I typically buy medium eggs when the price difference between large and medium eggs is 7-cents or more.

When the price per egg (in the shell) is higher than whole powdered eggs, I use powdered. A nice thing about using powdered eggs is that you can often use 1/2 an egg in a recipe and get the same results (things like pancakes, muffins, etc.) - we're just accustomed to using a whole egg. Powdered eggs also come in handy when you need to use 1/2 an egg in a recipe - which happens when I make 6 muffins instead of a recipe for 12 to bake in my toaster oven.

I have been mumbling to myself for some time about this same thing i.e. downsized eggs. Along with smaller rolls of TP. I notice one brand is really being tricky, their rolls are still fat (circumference is the same) as the old but just shorter i.e. If you stand the roll up and compare it to other brands, it is shorter.

I have medium and extra large eggs in my refrigerator at the moment. The medium ones were bought at a discount store, are from Ohio(!), and marked for weight at 21 oz. for the entire carton. I have local (from up the road 6 miles in Ripon) extra large eggs purchased at Trader Joe that are not marked for weight but look really large compared to the medium and the large eggs I usually buy. The medium eggs from the discount store were $1.00/dz. The Trader Joe eggs were $1.19/dz. These were not, of course, from cage free hens.

I just recently had to start buying eggs from a store again, as my farmer's chickens have stopped laying in this heat. I now buy eggs at Whole Foods that come from a farm down near Austin, which has pastured chickens, and it tells all about that and the Omega 3, and contact information, and that they are large eggs, but it doesn't have the weight anywhere on the carton. Maybe some areas/states require weights on the cartons, and some don't?

By the way, this farm, Coyote Creek, is where "my " farmer buys his chicken feed. He's checked out the operation first hand, and assured me the chickens are well cared for and have a large area in which to roam.

since I got rid of my "girls" last year, I'v ebeen buying eggs from an Amish friend. they are $1.50 a dozen, but eggs are $1.89 a dozen in the stores right now, it's amazing.

Anyway, I don't have any weights listed on mine, go figure. (grin) I have noticed, however, that the "large" eggs aren't as large as they used to be. Yes, and toilet paper rolls are smaller and sugar comes in 4 pound bags. Potatoes were always packaged in 5 and 10 pound bags here, now they are 4 an d8 pound bags. A quart of ice cream isn't a quart any more and a loaf of whole wheat bread that used to weigh a pound only weighs 14 ounces now. 20 pound bags of dog food now weigh 18 pounds. Everything is "downsizing".

Saw 8 o'clock bean coffee on sale... bogo on 3 lb bags... good price. As I was checking out, noticed the "3 lb" bag weighed something like 36-38 ounces... NOT 48 (if my math is correct)?!? Cashier said it had been that way for quite a while.

Total Weight 36 oz (18 eggs) or 1.03kg If there are 18 eggs at 50g each, that should be a total of 900g, not 1.03kg. Should that be 60g, which is 2oz? That would make more sense, as 2 oz x 18 is 36oz, and 60g x 18 is 1.08kg.

Colleen, I thought the same thing... but that is what the carton says LOL! All I can think is the "serving size" is the weight without the shell?

I'm about to use the last of my eggs from the store, which I got free (coupon from the store), and will start to use powdered eggs after that, due to cost ($1.94 - large, $1.83 - medium). Those are sale prices - BTW. The powdered eggs I have in storage are less expensive per egg.

I was swapping farm eggs for a loaf of homemade bread (which cost me around 50-cents to make a loaf of bread), but the family said between the coyotes (in charge of chicken attrition) and the cost of feed, can't afford to keep them anymore.

When it comes to toilet paper, a few years ago I tried to work out the cost every which way, until I decided to treat it like produce - I calculate the cost by the weight of a roll. It's the only variable that is consistent to all brands. Some sheets are shorter/longer, the whole roll may be 1/4-inch narrower, 1-ply and up... This is purely for actual cost - I don't care if bears use it in the forest, or clouds are lined with it, or people call it John Wayne. My bottom line is cost - not comfort. After all the testing, the rolls that have 1,000 sheets (and Dollar General has a 4-pack that has 1,250 sheets per roll) are nearly always the least expensive and last the longest. If there is a lot of "give" to the roll when you squeeze it, that's also a sign there is more air than paper on the roll. Choose a solid roll, without a lot of give, if you are looking for best price.

I bought some inexpensive toilet paper when Alice was still living at home. It was sturdy, stiff stuff and LOTS of it. Alice didn't let me hear the end of how unpleasant this stuff was to use. :) About some things I simply have to compromise and buy up a notch.

On another topic, I don't think I've seen colored or printed toilet paper in very long time. I have never bought it so I don't pay attention to it. Is it still out there?

Barnmom, you're right - I haven't seen printed TP either for a long-g time, & hadn't even thought about them. Paper towels are another thing, however.

*Everything* seems to be downsized at the grocery store these days. I find it really irritating that packaging stays the same or gets bigger as the contents become less. Cereal, ice cream, chips, etc. I have tried to become better about reading labels.

I buy my eggs from my neighbor for $1 per dozen. Most of them are large , but some of them are Mongo! LOL No idea what a dozen weighs.

(For whomever asked...3 lb should be 36 oz. 48 oz would be 4 lb.)

I find the best way to save on toilet paper is drink less coffee. You save on both ends. Literally.
