Bulbs in a Ceiling Fan

Hello all,

We have a Hunter 5 blade 52" fan in our greatroom with standard 60w bulbs. They do not give off much light and I replaced them with CF bulbs. I've tried the "spirial" kind and the "tube" kind and they both flicker when on. Am I doing something wrong or is this the wrong bulb.

Are they on a dimmer?

The fan is not on a dimmer, but it is controlled by a remote, if that helps.

Using another type of lamp is not always a good idea because the rating limit is intended to prevent excessive heat build up and a "retrofit" CFL with an integral ballast in the base can overheat in an enclosure. If you remove the enclosure you might be able to use 50w. PAR 20 halogen lamps. In general, I recommend using another location for lighting because such lights usually shine in your eyes especially if they are not frosted.

You won't find a fan that takes the standard base bulbs unless it is old stock. The change was made at least a year ago. Seems people were putting high wattage bulbs in the fans and causing a safety problem. There are now CFL bulbs for ceiling fans that should last a long time.

Since you have been registered for some time, this probably is not a trolling post/question. Based on what you posted, the lamps working in some fixtures and not in the fans leads one to believe that the problem is in the fans or the light fixtures mounted on the fans.On-scene hired diagnosis could get lengthy and expensive-- as could replacing the fans.And could be unsuccessful. The options could include replacing the AFCI to see if that changes anything. Or replacing one of the fans to see if the new fan will work with those lamps.If so, replacing all three is a choice. Or simply using lamps that are successful in the present setup.

That's okay about the bed! I think it's great to look at higher priced items anyway to get inspiration then find something less pricey in that same style :) I only suggested the stikwood as a way to draw in some interest and texture and visual on that tall wall but it's totally not the only option in doing so. You could possibly do a large print on the wall. That bedding color is really nice and a great accent color! one thing to remember you don't have to rush to but a room together. And have it look like you just went to a catalog and bought everything. Surround yourself with what you really love. And you will be much more pleased with the outcome.

Not sure what vibration does to compact flouresants, never tried it. But are you sure you want brighter lights in the fan? If this is a standard fixture with 4 60 watt bulbs, thats a bright lite! if you put 4 100 watt bulbs in it the light would be bright enough to hurt your eyes. I wouldn't try to get more light then 4 x 60 watt unless the fan is 15+ feet high. Way out of line of sight.

Thanks for helping. The fan is a Hunter, two 60 watt bulbs, on a 9' ceiling, and the bulbs are about 7.5'.

If the lights are alos on the remote it works in a similar manner to a dimmer (Triac for on/off) and the flourescents are very likely to have a problem.
If you can find dimmable flourescents (there are some around) you can probably eliminate the flicker problem.
