Help me find a trash can - do I really need a 2nd mortgage?

Ok, so next on my list is a trash can. A pull-out in a cabinet is not an option for many reasons (not least of which we don't have a cabinet to put it in!).

We need one that is relatively large, ie the kind that takes the tall white trash bags sized. Corner shaped, half-round or skinny would be good, so's to take up less floor space. I have a dog who has figured out how to nose open anything too easy (although he's not actually a trash can artist, merely an opportunist). Stainless would be nice, although not essential.

So far, I've yet to see anything like this for much less than $100, and there is NO WAY I'm paying that much for a trash can.

So, does anybody have any good sources for a decent quality trash can that won't break the bank?

I'm not sure but I'm in the same boat. However, I'm almost inclined to think that I might have to give up an arm or something to through out my trash. I will say that I've seen the Simple Human brand and I was impressed. I have their soap dispenser and OMG, IT WORKS!! I may end up getting one. BUT, you may want to try Ebay. I don't use them much but when I ask where I can find something without breaking the bank, the answer is always "Did you try Ebay??)

Ha - i didn't even think of ebay for that!

However, I have just had a look and on first glance I see that most of them have the infrafred sensor "touchless feature".

I don't even want to THINK about the fun my dog would have with that - my guess is maybe, oo, 3 days to figure out how to work it!

Ellie if you only have anti virus you are at risk. I would suggest you get Malwarebytes and SUPERantispyware, both of which are free. These require you to manually update and run scans but they only need doing every one to 3 weeks depending on how conscientious/nervous you are. I never leave my external hard drive connected to the computer. This is both for safety and economy. Connected it is open to attack and also runs all the time. If you have a factory built computer your power supply might be taxed to a degree unless your external drive is self powered. Most today are not self powered I believe. Any work saved in between would be lost. You can store your data on the computer itself and back it up to the external drive for protection. Always a good plan to have data you do not wish to lose saved in 2 locations Outlook is generally a part of Microsoft Office although I understand it can be bought as a stand alone program - quite expensive too. One would presume Cobian Backup came with your Go_Flex drive. It is good that you ask these questions but be sure to allow yourself to enjoy the benefit these things can bring you. A computer is only as good as the person sat in front of the keyboard. Urlee and Cat_ky I have no issues with anyone owning more than one computer, I have 6 and all working yet I live alone. But to purchase another computer "just in case" seems rather more than odd to me and a complete waste of money for an item that keeps becoming out of date with alarming regularity. Don expressed it very wisely I think.

Yes, a home equity loan and a second mortgage are practically the same thing. You will see lenders using both terms. Technically, a home equity loan would not have to be a second mortgage. For example, if you owned your house free and clear (no mortgage), a loan against it wouldn't be a second mortgage, but would be a first mortgage. But the key point to remember is that whichever term they use, they are placing a lien against your home which is securing the loan. The best place to shop for this type of loan is at financial institutions where you currently do business or that are known to you. The first place to check is the mortgage company that holds your first mortgage. They often offer good deal to current customers. That's not to say that some of the lenders who advertise for customers aren't offering good deals -- some are -- but you have to look especially carefully at the closing costs and other fees with lenders who do a lot of mass market advertising. (Of course, you need to check these fees with any lender.) Often lenders will roll the closing costs back into your loan, so that you may get a check for the $10,000 you are seeking, but you may actually be borrowing more than that. In some cases, quite a bit more. Often a good time to get a home equity loan is when you refinance your home. If you are currently paying above market interest rates, consider refinancing and obtaining a home equity loan at the same time from the same lender you refinance with. Often in this case they'll give you a home equity loan with no additional closing costs. As far as the rates you've been quoted, the 4.75 percent seems closer to what I see being offered around where I live. The rates should apply to any amount of loan, not just to large amounts. In fact, many lenders will offer you a home equity line of credit instead of a straight home equity loan. Instead of giving you a check for the amount of your loan, you'll get a check book which allows you to write checks against your line of credit. This is preferable because you don't start paying interest on the money until you actually need it, and if you never need the whole $10,000 available in your credit line, you never actually borrow it. The balance on your home equity line of credit can go up and down just like a credit card balance, and you pay interest on just what you owe. With any loan, just be sure to understand all the fees and costs associated with it. Some lenders, especially those who advertise in the mass media, try to downplay or even hide the fees, and this can mean that what looks on the surface like a good deal isn't such a good deal once you dig down and see what you're really paying.

Can I assume that you fellows have 3 - 6 months' income set aside in an emergency fund in case some rather urgent and catastrophic, unexpected expense turns up - or you get no income for an extended period, e.g. go on strike? Trouble is - when the investment's set up to be pretty well immediately available, usually the rate of return is low. Not much fun to get 2% on invested emergency money - but be paying 5 - 7% on mortgage. I often don't have emergency funds on hand, but have invested assets more than adequate to use as collateral for a loan in case of emergency - at lower rate of interest, as the loan is fully secured by easily-liquidatable assets, unlike the hassle of repossessing, towing, storing and selling a car used as collateral for a loan to buy it. Canadians not allowed to use registered retirement accounts as collateral for loans - but if one carries a substantial amount in such a fund with that institution, usually they'll set up a loan that's officially unsecured, but at a lower rate than that usually charged on an unsecured loan. When I make such a loan, though, the interest is not deductible. Possible problem - if one gets laid off and goes to make such a loan to tide one over, when the bank asks who is one's employer and hears that there isn't one at present - the loan is more than likely refused. But - a number of my investments are carried by the stockbroker. If I have regular, quality assets of, say, $10,000., the broker will lend me up to $5,000. without question. S/he doesn't care whether I'm employed or not. Careful, though - if my $10,000. asset declines in value to $8,000. and I had borrowed the full eligible amount of $5,000., the broker will call me to ask me for a deposit of at least $1,000. to reduce my loan to $4,000.: by tomorrow, at the latest. More than likely s/he'll ask for $1,500. or so, to add a little cushion in case of further reduction in value. If I can't come up with the required amount, then they must sell some of my asset - which results in a reduction in the amount of the asset underlying the loan. Not a good course: I don't want margin calls for either my clients or myself. Here in Canada, mortgage interest on owner-occupied home is not deductible - but when home is sold for a gain, total amount of gain is tax-free. Interest on money borrowed for non-registered investment is deductible, but on money invested in registered retirement account isn't - as the amount invested is deductible, within limits. Many advisors suggest borrow to invest in retirement account, early in year before deadline, then when tax refund relative to the deduction for the retirement account investment arrives, use it to pay down loan, try to have loan paid off before year end. It is really hard to decide; my rule of thumb has always been, which will require the least out of my pocket in the long run? Without doing all kinds of calculations (that I can't do, but I believe that there are websites that can calculate it for you) I can't say for sure. There are advantages to the fixed rate refi, especially lowering the interest rate on your original balance; but could you get a lower rate and less out of pocket from a HELOC, paying it off first with the same discipline that you have been using? Have you talked to a credit union? I did take out a HELOC from my local credit union in order to pay off my mom's condo loan; there were no closing costs, fees, etc and the lowest interest rate in town. That was before the crash -- and it was long ago paid off, so I don't know if such a good deal might still be available. Don't know what repairs you need, but some large companies (hvac, roofing, siding) will offer low cost financing too -- you have to read the contract very carefully to be sure that you are getting what was promised.

Hi, divamum: It so happens that I am looking for a good home for a stainless trash can that would probably meet your needs. It is the butterfly can from Simple Human, holds 30 liters/8 gallons and is insanely expensive. I actually loved using this trash can and felt some sadness at moving into a new house with a pull-out trash cabinet. But there is no place for the butterfly and it's been sitting in our living room while I try to figure out what to do with it. (I tried to join Freecycle in my area (southern CT) and got rejected two times. Why?! But that's another story.) Anyway, it's yours for the shipping, which is probably around $25...not quite sure. Let me know. (I think I also have some extra bags for it.) It's clean and sparkling and only a couple of years old.

(I won't be offended if you don't want it....I'll just keep trying to join Freecycle.:-))

I just bought a simple human like can from Kohls for 65.00 It holds my 30 gallon bags as the tall white ones are just a tad too small. It was on sale and I had a 30% off scratcher. They aslo sell similar ones at Sams for approx. the same cost. BB&B also sells them and they have 20% coupons in our paper all the time and you can also sign up for coupons in the internet. Good luck.
i needed a pedal operated can for the dogs. Ours has figured out how to open almost ever trash can I have had, including the sensor ones. This one has been much more of a challenge as he must get into the can before the lid comes down. He won't get into it if I am looking, so I wait until the lid is almost down before I turn my back!

Those with dogs who think the trash is theirs ("Well YOU weren't wanting that anymore, so it must be mine!") beware of the stainless trashcans. I have a Simple Human one, probably the butterfly, and it is all DENTED from a certain hound mix who thinks that turning your back on him gives him permission to do as he likes. Those trash cans are not at all hound-proof, and the stainless looses its appeal when dented.

Well, after spending $$$ on several cheaper cans and living with them for six months or so only to try again, I wish I would have went with what I orginally wanted. I finally did and LOVE it. It comes in 18 gallon and 22 gallon. They do have smaller ones if you don't need one quite that size. And my dog can not get in it. Its pricey, but I feel it was worth it. I signed up for Amazon Prime to get free shipping and it arrived in 2 days.

divamum, sorry I didn't get back into this thread until now, but I just saw your response to my ebay suggestion - what a hoot, re the dog! I can just see the top opening and closing, and opening and closing, and opening and closing - what fun! Poor thing - that would probably drive him nuts. However, I can remember when I had two black labs that LOVED trash; and more than that, loved spreading it all over the house! I could never have one of those smart cans then - they would have been chomping at the bit, waiting for me to leave the house so they could have at it!!

Well, aunttomichael, bless her, was a guardian angel in all this and sent me hers! I LOVE it - dog can't come close to figuring it out (although he's nosed around it hopefully) and it tucks nicely next to the fridge. We're so grateful to her for helping us out - another example of the wonderful generosity of GWers!!

(scuse the lingering construction mess - we need to get all those paint cans stowed elsewhere to clean up that area, which hopefully we're doing TODAY!)
