Entryway with no coat closet - tell me how you keep it organized!
Comments (21)Bma, I'm sorry I didn't mean that you thought my solution was an eyesore. Though I'm sure at times ours was. Especially in winter with snow pants, hats and gloves added to the mix! I wish it were easier to know expressions here without using html. I've tried, but it makes everything italic or bold. Thanks for the pictures Saruna. In the picture of yours I've linked to below I see that you could easily do both of the ideas I did in our home only just down the hall a bit from the door itself. I'm so glad I asked for pictures. I'd move your bencdh across to the opposite wall under the lightswitch and put the shelf above where you have the bench now or even get a narrow hall tree. We now have one at our back entry that I got at Hobby Lobby. I had just bought it and plopped some things on it that happened to be close by. I don't have a current picture of it, but actually you can see it better in this pix. I think you'd have plenty of room to have one like this where your bench is now. You could add your own hooks to the sides low enough for your children to hang their coats and be out of the way of the sitting area. I now have basket in the cubbies where shoes can be tucked and just measured to make a cushion. The cushion will be sixteen inches deep by twenty nine inches wide so that gives you an idea of the size....See MoreWhat's a reasonable price for silk drapes...
Comments (10)Demifloyd, your curtains look to be at least two widths of fabric (54" x 2), so the curtains fishfacenj is considering will not be nearly as full as yours'. Personally, I would not buy anything already made up from Calico Corners. The husband and wife in Florida who made a houseful of curtains, slipcovers, bedding, etc. for us do quite a bit of contract work for CC---they do not, contrary to popular belief---have their "own" workroom. They job it out to different workrooms and individuals and the quality varies greatly. This couple told me the markup on the CC work and it was almost DOUBLE what they charged me as a retail customer. A good friend purchased a loveseat from Calico Corners, to be covered with material she purchased at CC. They required her to buy 25 yards of 54" width fabric (that is half a bolt!), and charged $2500 for the sofa/upholstery in addition to the fabric. There is NO way this item could have used more than 12 yards of fabric according to any guidelines for matching stripes, etc., and her fabric wasn't even a matched print. When the sofa was delivered there was no leftover material, as there should have been. The loveseat was well-made, but was certainly not in the $3500 league... she could have bought something much nicer for that price (fabrication + material). I don't know where you live, presumably in New Jersey, but I would not purchase anything from Calico Corners unless you simply LOVE the curtains and have to have them. I would also raise an eyebrow at the decorator's suggestion that she haggle with a retail establishment on your behalf.... that doesn't sound right, as the designers I have known and worked with normally would not deal with a CC-type place, anyway, Remember also that you will have to buy the drapery hardware (poles, brackets, etc.) and pay an installation fee in addition to the cost. If they aren't exactly what you wanted, I would pass and do something custom on your own. If you do want them, look them over very carefully, as the original customer may have found a flaw in the material, they may hang unevenly, etc. Ideally, silk curtains should be lined with baby flannel and interlined, and should be weighted evenly along the hem. Once you've bought something like this there is generally no return or redress. CC requires a deposit on custom work, which is usually hefty enough that people don't simply forget to pick them up....See MoreBest Closet Organizers
Comments (11)My friend who is an organizer swears by Elfa systems. I honestly don't know a thing about them... I worked for a family that had a wire system. I found it somewhat hard to use. The hangers they chose were hard to get in and out of the slats between the wire shelf (they did not have bars for sliding hangers along)...and things poked out of their baskets like bra straps, tiny panties, knee hi's and looked mess. The cats could also get into the baskets and I had to wash clean items that would get all furry (frustrating, the folks would NOT keep the closet closed!!). You may also choose to look in a store which carries used store fixtures. Sometimes they have very inexpensive and creative things you could use in addition to what you purchase for the main areas. Comments (13)Red Lover (love your name). I changed jobs & schedules about 18 months ago allowing me what I consider a normal schedule. I was able to get into an good exercise routine (1 hour Mon-Fri) and cut down on so much eating. I vowed to lose it nice, slow and steady. If I had a treat, I'd have a bite or two. I lost the 1st 50# over about 10 months. Loving summer fruits, I decided to just maintain. I'm getting back into loosing my final 15#. I'm now working out during my breaks at work for 45 minutes over the day, and cutting down to around 1200 calories. I'm guessing the rest should be off sometime around summer 2014. I'm down to a size 4. Before I said I was a one size stretch all. I would never buy form fitting clothes, so I truly don't know how large I had gotten. SJhockeyfan - for some reason I can't click on your link. I have problems at times though I didn't for Tuesday 2008. We've been using these kind of pant hangers for years when my DH had a ton of dress pants for work and I don't know why. I do know that though it takes up more vertical space, it takes up less horizontal space. I had placed a few pants to the side that were out of season, or weren't quite fitting and folded them over a hanger. I noticed them after I took these pics and replaced them. They seem to bunch up over a hanger and crowd other clothes. It works for us. Dedtired the ones on the right are so old, I really can't remember where I got them, I guessing Wally World (Walmart). They no longer carry that particular style but now sell the ones on the left. I want to get some more pant hangers like those to match. I think in part our closet looks tidy because of the uniformity of hangers. We've got a few oddball hangers left but most match. Tuesday_2008 - I didn't see those at the store. If we were to use that size, we'd have even more boxes yet (I don't know if I have 14 categories as it is), plus they are too small for the bins we have (not shown)....See MoreBethpen
