Budget Kitchen Facelift w/ Formica Butterum Granite
Comments (27)A few more pics as things get finalized... The countertop arrives! My husband Russell cutting the sink opening. Notice how he has the blood pressure, heartburn, and arthritis medicine handy. LOL Here is a shot of the seamless corner and beveled edge. Close-up of Butterum Granite (Formica) Another one The breakfast room side of the kitchen getting into shape. It is separated by a half wall on the left where the refrigerator is in the kitchen. It also shares one long common wall (with arch openings) with the kitchen and our den which I am also painting in "Praline". Here I got a new curtain with button accents $24 on clearance at JC Penney, oil rubbed bronze curtain pole $18, and Russell spray painted our old light fixture to match. Another shot Thanks everybody for your comments!...See MoreFormica: new laminate over old wood?
Comments (4)We are most likely going with laminate (if I can ever find one that I truly like) and we are planning on going over the old countertops too. I talked to a handyman that does this all the time and he checked out my countertops and said they were in excellent shape to do this. We also have the maple trim to match our cabinets (and DH really likes it) so that is another reason why we are going that route. However, when I was at Lowes recently to look at Formica samples the guy that works in the cabinet/countertop department told me absolutely do not go over the old countertops, as they "never look good". I kind of took it with a grain of salt b/c obviously this would mean less money for Lowes to make off of me. I thanked him for his "advice" then decided I'm just going to go over the old countertops anyway :)...See MoreDesign Around This #4: Formica Patterns are coooool!
Comments (58)I've been out for a week, so I'm catching up. GreenDesigns, thanks for posting the Euro pics. Laminate is fun, and I think we in the U.S. have lost our appreciation for that. I've loved seeing the different laminates people found to work with--those roses! And the Molten Glass Blue!! Sochi, you credited me with the kitchen with the Beluga pulls--that was Roarah (gorgeous kitchen). Pal, I like the B/W kitchen. Which of the Marmoeum graphic series is that? It looks like a slate gray background rather than black, and I think I'd like to see a sharp B/W (Sgraffito rather than Signo or Dry Point). GreenDesigns, you said, "Butter yellow and taupe is almost too sophisticated for a cabin in the Sierras." I totally agree. My "story" was a client (not that I'm actually a pro) who SAID they wanted rustic, but rejected things that were actually rustic and kept drifting toward a sleeker modern look. "You know, rustic, but modern." The resulting kitchen would be considered "rustic" by no one but the fictional clients. Mtnfever, I like the last set of tile you posted. Very pretty. I like the Seagrass strand, but I think the tangled seaweed would tie in well with the existing Oak cabinets. I didn't think the dogbone white/stainless would work with the oak. Good luck with your choices!...See MoreMarble/stone looking formica/laminate countertops
Comments (23)Like ravencajun, I had thought I wanted to get the new Formica laminate for a kitchen facelift in early 2015. They will send you big samples free of charge. I went to Lowe's to see more and was shocked to find that with an Ogee edge, like diymom79 shows above, that I could get real stone for almost the same price. I ended up using the Fantasy Brown quartzite that raven did, also....See Morewarmfridge
