Top-loading HE washer & dryer for us?
Comments (6)LEQ9508PW0 (zero at the end, not letter O) Most probable items (prices quoted from an online source) -- -- Heating Element 279838 - $35.95 (or alternate ER279838 - $27.50) -- Thermostat Kit 279816 (includes both Hi-Limit Thermostat on element frame and Thermal Fuse on heater box) - $22.30 -- Operating Thermostat 8318268 - $21.57 Unlikely all of those items are bad, but even if they were, the parts total is $71 (standard ground shipping is only $6.95), which is considerably less than $450 to $500 for a new dryer (or *much* more than that for a new washer/dryer pair). Less likely -- -- Timer 3406725 - $82.37 -- Motor 279827 - $67.83 (or alternate ER279827 - $54.75) Your choice, of course, but seems more reasonable to repair than buy new....See Moretop load washer vs front load washer
Comments (12)By "fill" I was referring to filling with clothes - a traditional agitator-type top loader is rougher on clothes when the water level is set for a partial fill. The vanes usually are usually largest at the bottom and will just violently shred your clothes, especially at the faster agitation speed. The worst in my experience were late-'80s and '90s Whirlpool (and related brands) that had an agitator that couldn't twist very far in either direction, and tried to make up for it by agitating very fast (most of them would automatically slow down to the "gentle" speed partway through the cycle, even if the regular or heavy-duty cycle was selected, but by then the damage was done). It was particularly bad in their apartment-size 24" wide washers, which had a small tub that didn't leave much room for the clothes to tumble; large items like pants or bed linens were particularly at risk. Other manufacturers of that era, like Maytag and Speed Queen, had a 180 to 210 degree arc to the agitation that allowed it to twist back and forth more slowly and still move water through the clothes. Actually, the only top-load washer with an impeller plate (not sure if that's the right term) I've used, an 8 year old Haier, is substantially rougher on clothes when washed or rinsed with anything but a full water fill; but the plate spins faster than most recent HE top loaders and it doesn't have a recycling waterfall or a spinning drum to help with washing so the rotating plate is the only mechanism for moving water. I'm guessing the new large-tub top loaders are more gentle....See Morewater usage for top load HE vs front load
Comments (14)Your best bet is to pick the models that interest you an look up the specs on them. You'll need to do some math. Find out how many gallons it takes, factor in whether you do extra rinses (some FL users use up to 5 rinses or more) and that will certainly impact the water use and not be included in the energy site estimates. Once you've figured out the number of gallons you'll use per load multiply that by your cost per gallon of water. Cabrio/Oasis/Bravos are all the same basic design. There's people with Oasis and Cabrio who have not had any problems and there's people with Bravos who have had trouble. Every machine has it's problems. Even the "mighty" Miele has a number of people who have reported problems here. Keep in mind many times pilot error is a big factor in troubles. HE toploads are more sensitive to loading it seems than other types. Once you get used to it you shouldn't have the troubles. However if you go from a conventional washer to a HE machine, FL or TL there's a learning curve. Some people don't want to learn the "new" system. There's also other HE toploaders besides the Cabrio/Oasis/Bravos models. GE Harmony gets good reviews from most users. Of course, there's again, always going to be someone unhappy....See Morehow do he washers sense how much water is needed ?
Comments (2)Flow meters typically come into play to get slightly higher fills for delicate or bulky item cycles, cool-down fills at end of the wash period, and perhaps the final rinse. The meter checks the incoming water flow rate to the point the pressure switch triggers, then the machine fills to a slightly higher level as 'counted' by the flow meter. The flow meter compensates for varying household water pressure and such. It's also sometimes involved in sensing overfill or no-fill errors. Toploader HE machines (Oasis, Cabrio, Bravos, F&P including non-HE agitator models with auto water level sensing) use a different method. Air trapped under the inner basket as the machine fills causes it to float and disengage from the drive motor. The controller can sense through the motor when the basket has floated and disengaged. Weight of the wet clothes (larger/smaller loads, lighter/heavier/absorbent fabrics) counteracts the floating effect until the buoyancy overcomes the weight. A series of test agitation strokes may also be used to check the "drag" of the clothes on the agitator fins (or wash plate/impeller) for confirming the proper level....See Morebrutuses
