Anyone familiar with these Ellen Kennon colors?

Hi,

I am curious to try FSP and my guest room is painted SW ButterUp. It looks pretty but sometimes it gets too bright depending on time of day and season. The room is small 10 x 11 or so and gets alot of sunshine. One window faces east and the other south so it's bright most of the day. I have been looking for a room to try out these paints and thought maybe I should pick a different color for the room. Bedding is Martha Stewart quilt with shades of yellow, saffron, beige, off white and taupe. Anyone familar with these Ellen Kennon colors and could comment on how they would work in a small room with alot of light. Wheat (number 1 contender), Beige, Cognac, Camelhair, Cornsilk, Powdered Pebbles, Greige, Terracottta Sand. It's hard to tell with such small samples. This is a poor photo of the room at dusk, but it's the only one I have right now.

I recently painted in a bunch of Ek colors; one was cognac in my dining room. In my home, I did not care for it - too orangy in my room with my furniture and light. I had used Mustard Seed in my lviing/music room and I absolutely loved it. So the room I had painted with Cognac was painted over with Mustard Seed. MS is a deep, golden yellow, I just love the depth and multitued of colors in it.

Have you considered ordering some of her paint pots to paint a section of each wall with your favorites to see which you like best?

Hi,

I have to see if I have a swatch of mustard seed. Sounds nice. I am thinking Cognac is too orangy also. I will order a few pots once I get my choices narrowed down.
How do you like her paints??

EK Stone on walls and cabinet fronts, EK Rainbow Fog on trim. Taken with artificial light and perhaps flash, minimal natural light. Looks very different in the daytime - the Rainbow Fog is beautifully creamy in the diffuse north light. The third picture isn't very true to the color but shows what I did to paint a shower surround in the trim color (since it was really just a bath surround). Not shown in these photos, I later painted another surround around the sink, which works very well to hide all the toothpaste splatter. > > >

Hi, Hoyamom! Be sure to post photos of your Cognac bedroom. Bronze was the original color I asked EK to make for me, but I, too, thought it might be too dark for such a large area, and to carry up the stairs into the game room, so she adjusted it and came up with Cognac. I still like the Bronze and might repaint one day. Both the Bronze and Cognac have a good bit of green in them, so I went with the more green blues when I selected fabrics for chairs and in accessories, although she did make up Dusk for the dining room ceiling and accent wall with the Cognac, which is more of a true blue. I'm not a matchymatchy person, but I do feel for larger upholstered pieces and rugs the blues with a hint of green work better with the Cognac or the Bronze. Teals, golds, browns, cream and red are the colors I would try first with these EK colors. Of course most any color would be fine (but I can't see lemon yellow or clear, cool colors working very well). These colors have worked best for me. It's truly sad I can't seem to get an accurate photo of Cognac--the flash always washes it out. Here are a few photos with the colors I have used, perhaps this will help: I don't have much burgundy in this house, but this painting has some and I like it with the Cognac walls; window treatments and fabrics in this color (of course with other colors to tone down the contrast) I think would be stunning. I purchased EK color in ICI Dulux paint 8 years ago and it's held up beautifully. The two colors I used have no color shift so it was essentially a custom color purchase. But I expect the base is different today as there was a good deal of off-gassing for several weeks back then as the paint cured. Wondering if the problem you encountered could be the paint store? I'd take the paint back there with the photos for replacement. Kennon basically sells her color formulations for a surcharge. She's not furnishing the base. I know everyone loves Ben Moore paints and I found great colors with them. But two years later the color had pooped out, some of the paint was peeling and we had to repaint. I went with Farrow and Ball which is mixed in their factory, not any paint store. It provides the best surface texture and wears beautifully and is so low VOC there is no odor whatsoever. It's more expensive but worth it in my book. The estate/matte paint will burnish if scrubbed (thought not otherwise) and I was able to spackle and touch up ook paint hanger holes. I really like them. I have painted my house so many times in the 11 years we've lived here and never quite been satisfied. When I spoke to Ellen, she led me to warmer colors - mine were all cool colors. It all started with the living/music room and the Mustard Seed - never, ever thought I'd like a yellow paint - I LOVE this paint. It has such depth to it, colors change depending on the time of day, part of the room you are in, and it was an incredible tranformation.

I painted my kitchen in Spring Green - I have a big to me kitchen, dinette area and wow, love the color. It did freak me out a bit going on, but the whole family loves the green. It's more color than has ever been in the room, but it's not dark like it's been with even less color, even in the hallway going down to the powder room. I do have all walnut stained cabinetry and trim; the colors just make the wood pop.

The paint goes on dreamy. Very nice to cut in with, not so thin it runs, but not thick at all. Covers well but definately needs two coats over a primer.

Next up is our front entrance in honeysuckle, the hallway in buttercream and cafe au lait is in the plans for my family room.

We'll see if I can upload a before and after pic of the mustard seed - natural light, dreary day, no flash. You can see some of the different shades of the paint..

I tried the Camelhair color in my bathroom. Ultimately it was not the right color, but, it was a beautiful, beautiful color, and, I will definitely try EK paints again. The pigmentation in the paint is so beautiful, truly exquisite! Good luck.

I love how the Mustard Seed looks. Thanks for the feedback. It's nice to see someone who doesn't paint their home all in one color scheme. I was feeling alone in that I don't do that, but many people here do.
