Darn...I kept my mouth shut for a change.....

Now I wish I hadn't because I got ticked and I'm still ticked. I see the doctor for my sinus problems on March 10. I'm trying hard to stay well until then...it's hard with all the flu going around and the colds. But..yesterday, we went for coffee at Target. We usually go there in the mornings and meet friends (a good time). Yesterday, we were alone because all of our friends have headed in different directions for a while. Anyway, we were setting there drinking coffee and talking and just generally relaxing and having a nice morning. This man we know walked in and set down with us...then he proceeded to tell us how sick he was and that he had tried to get in to see a doctor, but they couldn't see him that day and that he really had a terrible, miserable cold. So..there he sat breathing on us :o( :o( We hardly ever set with this man and don't particularly like him....we should have asked him why he hadn't just gone home after trying to get in to see a doctor. When he left, I used hand sanitizer and then I wiped down where he had been setting, but I wasn't a happy campter...and it would have made me feel much better to have just told him where to go (if he didn't want to go home) :o) And...I kept my mouth shut for a change and I'm sorry I did :o) And...yes, I know...before someone says it..."I" could have stayed home myself..but I had cabin fever

I would have gotten up and moved, saying, "sorry, but I don't want to catch what you have." I haven't had a cold in so many years, I can't remember the last time, but if I am somewhere, like in a store, and someone sneezes or coughs, I will go two aisles over to get away from them. It may not help but it makes me feel better.

Unfortunately, we never think of the right thing to say at just the right moment. An "excuse me, I can't afford to get sick right now", said with a smile and moving two tables over continuing to talk to him. Just for the record, no I do not think you're the one that should have to stay home. Maybe your moving would have been rude, but in my thinking he was the inconsiderate one sitting down uninvited with a cold that is making him so miserable he's going to the doctor.

Toni, I dug one out of the trash bag before the rest went into the snow storm...;-(((( No one here seems to be interested in plants as I, let alone take care of any...I would rather see them freeze to death, than give them away to anyone and see it die a slow death.... I kept the "duke jasmine". They smell soooo good when in bloom and it had such a healthy root system! I felt horrible looking at such a healthy plant, and then just to kill it. I inspected it thoroughly, and it had no mites, so it was spared...But I intend on keeping it small and spraying on a regular basis. That should keep it from being a magnet..Crazy ha, how much we love our plants? My adenium had no mites either, but it has been known to be a mite magnet in the past, and I wanted to take no chances..That is at work now...I will take a pic soon and post how happy it is... I examined all my plants today, and not a ONE had a bug! It must of been just those few I talked about earlier. Even my Cordy is growing beautiful leaves now, mite free. I just have to make sure I spray often for the next couple of weeks. That one to is in a seperate room.. I PRAY you do not have mealie....Toni, I know how much you hate them! You know a pest worst than that? Thrips!!!! Oh yes. I know a place where you can buy plants, and they have had thrip problems for years there. They hide when you spray, and come out when your gone..They are good hiders. You can't hit them with spray like you can the ones you see. They tell me they cut off the new growth as it emerges on most their plants..YUK..Thank God I have none of those. They make mites seem like a picnic I guess..Not only would I never buy a plant from them, but I would not even step foot in there for fear one might hitch a ride to my home...I am lucky I havn't brought one of these home from other stores, and if I did, I would hire beneficial pests to rid them..Ones that search out and destroy these thrips! I called them yesterday to see if they had more FP, asked if they were using the spray you showed me to use since the last time I talked to the girl there and she said yes. She also said that she hasn't seen thrip damage for a while..Hummmmm You will getting an e-mail soon. I have so much to share with you... By the way, it only took me an hour to spray ALL my plants and the plant room today, along with cleaning the walls, shelves and floors...getting better at it...What a feeling to know all my plants are clean for the time being! I too encountered a problem like this, only it was in real life. My church organized a one day only of classes you could choose from to learn basic but classic lessons you should know how to run a house. They offered free classes such as, Knitting, Basic Pie Crust Making, Mending, Sewing, Couponing, Canning Jam, ect.. I chose Canning Jam sinceI had watched my Mom can when I was a child, but wanted a refresher course. The lady told us she was self taught (Red Flag #1), that she red up on some of the older methods from our local Library (Red Flag #2) and by this time I was concerned and uncomfortable. Then when she hot packed them and said to leave them on the counter for a couple hours to "seal them" (Red Flag #3), asked if it was safe (full well knowing it wasn't), she said no one in her family has gotten sick yet and that her grandmother did it that way for years. I was upset and sick about this. Here this woman was endorsing an unsafe method to 20 women who didn't know any better. I tried asking her if she was sure that this was safe (in a wussy nice way) saying I remembered my Mom HWB canning them to seal it, but she brushed me off saying if I wanted to I could, "just to be safe". That is where I SHOULD have said "No, it IS safer. The Extension Offices say so and so do all of the new canning books" ect. But I didn't and even my best friend was sucked into the open kettle method. I took her straight to the web and my newest and latest BB canning book and showed her that it is never safe. I feel so bad and awful that so many could hurt their families even though they were just trying to do some good. I am now a total fan of just speaking up and saving some one from being very sick of botulism or worse.

Snookums - I read a bunch of responses then just jumped ahead to put in my .02 cents. I've learned a few things having been married once before my current husband. #1 - You may have a spouse that is never satisfied. #1 was like that and it's part of their demoralizing way of controlling the situation and getting you to jump through hoops. LESSON LEARNED - No one spouse can carry the burden of making the relationship work, making it happy etc. Refuse to be the burden carrier if this is the case. Couple of suggestions: You could say, or have the attitude that his level of satisfaction regarding decorating, home improvement is level A but since you like it at level C that you will bring it up there as you see fit. You're not asking him to agree to it, you're just telling him. What about the next time something needs doing, he hasn't done it after 2 askings that you just go ahead, hire a handyman and have it done? When he squawks tell him, hey you had your chance to do it, you obviously didn't deem it important so "I took care of it for you. Aren't you glad honey, I took that load off your plate." One of two things will happen, especially if you do this every time, he'll either begin to do it himself if he doesn't like spending the money or he'll be fine with it as you've handled it. If he's not fine, then he has to do it by deadline A or again, you'll take care of it. As many have said, when throwing his fits, walk out of the room or refuse to respond telling him when he wants to have calm, rational, nonacusatory conversation, he can find you, until then, you've got other things to do. With DH #2 of 13 yrs, he has a higher standard when it comes to some cleaning issues that bug him and don't bug me. He's a busy body and I just tell him, hey, I'm willing to bring it to this level, if you want it better than this or whatever, then you can take it from there. Yes, at times I do feel a twinge of guilt but that is my own fault for even feeling it. Luckily I have a very DIY DH, mostly because he'd rather do it than spend the $$ and he's very talented in many areas and can do it. So I'm grateful. Plus nobody could accuse him of being lazy. Does your DH have a high level of frustration when he can't figure things out, get them done etc.? Maybe this is his throwing smoke so he doesn't have to deal with that issue (thre real fire). Better to not do task, than feel frustration or inadequacy over not being able to do it. You follow? Again, you doing it or better yet handyman could be an answer here. My house is my haven from the outside world and I'll be D&^@ed if anyone is NOT going to let me make it that way. Keep doing what you're doing girl!!!! We're with you. :)

Its an effing disgrace and has exposed the EU as mendacious, venal, disgusting - having rampaged around the globe stealing, enslaving and debasing having imperial adventures which broke entire nations, living off the backs of the poorest people around the globe (and still doing so - every cup of coffee, every cheap T.shirt, every bloody IPhone), fixing, bullying, and imposing diktats, stomping on democracy and decency, collapsing into the worst form of hateful nationalism, dividing, meddling, offloading their crappy arms, selling anything to anyone as long as the scales are heavily loaded, (Merkel and Erdogan doing sneaky deals to benefit each other but certainly not ordinary Turks or refugees. I would wish to see political change, an egalitarian just society...but this heartless market capitalism is anti-life, anti-human and will, I fear, implode into ugly nationalisms of the worst, most hateful and fearful tribalism.

Sick or not, if a man sat down with me at a restaurant, cocktail lounge or coffee shop, I would make it very clear he was not invited or wanted - and I have been very vocal about this when it happens.

I know exactly how you feel, Maybee. The older I get the more protective of my health I am. I work in a hospital and am around germs all the time. Normally I would say "just wash your hands and keep them away from your face and you'll be ok". This works for me MOST of the time. However, I just got hit with a 24 hour stomach thingy and am getting over it today. Other than my hubby, the only person I was around Sunday (the day I am assuming I contracted the bug) was my exercise buddy. We walked and did an exercise tape. Got a text from her yesterday while I was laying in bed shivering and nauseated and she was sick with the same thing. Don't know where we picked it up. It just reminded me why I am so stringent about handwashing and staying away from sickies if at all possible. I probably would have asked him why he was out in public if he was sick, and then moved to another table.

If it's any consolation, he probably wasn't contagious any more. I think a person is most contagious with a cold before the worst symptoms show up. I'm a clean freak since I have bad sinuses and allergies and asthma (Oh my!) and try very hard to stay as healthy as I can. :)

If I were you, I'd get to a drug store , Vitamin or Herbal shop and buy a bottle of Ecchinicea.( Not sure of my spelling). Take a few pills today, with food or on an empty stomach, and keep taking them every day for about a week. Then gradually taper off. If you were taking six a day, take 5, then 4, etc. Ecchinicea is a natural herb flower that builds your immune system. I take it whever there are colds and flus going around. Frequent handwashing also helps.

I'd have told him, quietly and pleasantly, that my health is fragile, that I've been (deathly?) afraid of getting a cold, and that I'm not enthusiastic about sharing air space with him.

That, as we'd been there first and he'd joined us, that I felt that it would be courteous of him to leave ... but that if he chose to not do so, that I was going to.

I'd not tell him that he was about as popular within 100 feet of me as a suicide bomber would be within about a quarter mile.

P.S. My friend (a smoker, and in more fragile health than I) just had a cold when we were riding in my car together, and I came down with it a few days later. It was mainly a nuisance and not that troublesome for me, but it did send him to the hospital for a couple of days before he got through.

I considered missing a reunion of a dozen of so former Korea missionaries in Toronto (120 miles away) while it was on, to avoid spreading it to my friends, but when I felt a bit better, decided to go. As someone said, I have a feeling that when our cold symptoms are most evident, that most of the contagious aspect has passed.

I might be a bit biased, do you think?
