Do You Know What Your State's Flower Is?

We had a discussion last evening at the supper about this. This is Indiana's.

The peony (Paeonia) was adopted as the state flower by the 1957 General Assembly (Indiana Code 1-2-7). From 1931 to 1957 the zinnia was the state flower. The peony blooms the last of May and early June in various shades of red and pink and also in white; it occurs in single and double forms. No particular variety or color was designated by the General Assembly. It is cultivated widely throughout the state and is extremely popular for decorating gravesites for Memorial Day.

The provincial flower of Newfoundland & Labrador is the Pitcher Plant. It is a carnivorous plant, it traps insects in its water filled leaves (which are shaped like a pitcher, hence the name).

Possibly Leycesteria formosa or Himalayan Honeysuckle. Its not a real honeysuckle. There are few colorful cultivars out there. I have the more yellow leaved form. The berries are supposed to be edible. I think they prefer cooler climates but my current one is doing okay. I grew a bunch of them from seed years ago and they all eventually died, but they lived for years.

Most definitely Carya laciniosa.Very bizarre looking.Is the orange skin the remains of the seed case, or do mature plants also have them in the spring? Im not familiar with hickories, but I saw one coming up from seed as a kid and thought it also was bizarre looking.Their seedlings put on an almost unbelievable amount of growth the first year, don't they? Probably so the plant can reach more sun.The seedlings I saw must have been planted by a squirrel.It was in the middle of a privet hedge and was almost taller than the privet in first year. With the leaves not yet unfolded, it looks like something out of little shop of horrors with sharp fingers and thumbs.

Well you can still do a drive by. That's what I do with my mom who is in a wheel chair. I go every year too, but didn't this year, since it wasn't a great year, but your gd found a nice patch for a picture. She had to have that chair up on something, cause those sunflowers are about 7 to 8 feet tall.

PA's state flower is the Mountain Laurel, the wild and untamed relative of the rhododendron.

I hope no one googles a list for this thread like on the state bird one.

The state flower for Ohio is one of my favorites: Scarlet Carnation! I could use a bouquet of these in my house right now to take away the gloom of the skies today.

I don't know what Iowa's is. I have only been here 4 years. CA's is the golden poppy,which is illegal to pick.

The Lady Slipper here in Minnesota. Since they are protected, one cannot pick them. They are rather rare, but a couple of miles out of town, the ditch is full of them in early July.

Iowa is the wild rose. I never see any roses growing wild here.

Sunflower is the state flower for Kansas. There are a bazillion cultivated species, but I'm most familiar with the ditch variety ... they're everywhere from mid-July to September.

Missouri's is the White Hawthorn blossom. I'm not sure if I've ever even seen one.

The California poppy is our state flower, as Linda mentioned.
It is a pretty little orange flower and the plants grow and spread freely:

for some odd reason it is Mistletoe. Of course, Mistletoe isn't a flower... but maybe our forefathers didn't know?

New York's is the Rose.
The rose, in all its variety and color, was made the State flower in 1955.

Texas-Bluebonnet.I had them growing all over my property for about 3 years from the highway department planting them in the median.They are so pretty.
