Great, thought I was done with paint color, second guessing

Hi everyone who helped me before was amazing. I was set on BM Pittsfield Buff until I started reading about BM Aura and Ellen Kennon paints. I have a two and a half year old so I need something that will stand up well to her. I'm also getting nervous about how the Pittsfield Buff is going to look with my granite. I wouldn't be too worried if I already didn't have the painter scheduled for the last week in January and we have to have everything completed before the first weekend in February. I won't have time between when the kitchen is finished and when my painter is coming to paint some areas with samples. I know I can't match everything, especially since I'm painting the kitchen, nook and living area the same color, I just wanted a nice color that will show off my accent colors, mainly red, black and gold. Pittsfield Buff did just that with the sample granite and the Noce backsplash but I'm doing another color for the backsplash and as you can see, the slabs I have picked out have more gold in them than the sample did. I'm including a slideshow so there won't be so many pictures in the thread. The gold panels in the LR are going away but the valences in Kitchen/Nook are staying. Am I being ridiculous? Thank you for your time in helping.

Hi Andrea. I see things are moving along! Good for you! Re: your question about the paint and granite. Take a look at Susans02 photos of her gorgeous home. She has the Pittsfield Buff and granite similar to the Venetian Gold, only hers is Kasmir Gold. Scroll way down in that post and you will see a closeup of the countertops with her backsplash which is a tumbled limestone. It might help to give you an idea of how well those colors work together. HTH! I think what you have chosen will be beautiful! Keep us posted!

kmcg, thank you for responding. I have seen some pics of Tobacco Road and they are pretty. Would it work with the golds I have though? I know on another post you said that you had the garnet reds, greens and blacks which I have I just don't know what it would look like with my stuff. I love the Pittsfield Buff and so does my husband, I think I may be getting reno cold feet???

A mood board is a great idea. Force yourself to prioritize. What is the one piece you really don't want to give up. I'm betting its the stove. (That would be mine! That stove is to die for!) So make everything work with that. On my monitor I hadn't seen pink in the granite. Now knowing that, I'd say the cherry color in the cabinet wood is just fine with the granite you chose. Is the color of the stove also present in the granite slab? If it is, you are good. its really hard to judge color from a photo posted online, so here's one 'rule' that may help you focus in on what you -may- want to consider changing. If the color, or any shade of that color is in your granite slab, you can use it in the room. An exact match is not interesting or necessary. Second, you usually want a dominant tome and then other colors you bring out of that slab will be accents, so you won't use so much of them. Now, there are a million caveats to that, and of course, breaking the rules can bring fantastically stunning drama, but I think if you start with that one rule as a starting place, your own vision will begin to materialize. Whatever feels good to you will work. Just keep at it until it gels for you. With all the ideas coming from folks here and what you can see because you're looking directly at the different colors and where they will be in relation to each other, and considering the light in the room, it will begin to come together and you'll get a feel for where you will or won't want to challenge color 'rules'. I should say all of the above goes out the window if you're going for a monochromatic look. LOL BTW, I love my miele vacuum and I didn't even know they make dishwashers, but I can wax poetic about my bosch dishwasher. In addition to how well it functions, I'm very sensitive to background noise and its sooo quiet. Since its the way your faucet will stay where you aim it that really attracts you to it, maybe look at upscale stylized commercial configurations. I don't have any experience to draw on, its just a thought.

Interesting....Do you think Aura have done a better job? I usually use it but for one wall I couldn't justify shelling out premium bucks at the time. Although, the profile theory says it would not have helped either. I do use foam boards to start with -- I have 2 milk crates full of them from over the years!! But when it gets down to the wire and its really close, I like to actually put paint on the wall to get a true feel. So I tried a third coat yesterday on just the bad section without priming and it did improve the situation, but I can still see the squares. Probably at this point, it is only me who will know it is there. I saved the tray and roller in plastic. If they are still usable this morning maybe I will go over it one more time. I can't detect any break in the wall (yet) from the multi-coat area to the two-coat wall. That was my biggest concern - that I would take a small problem and make it a big problem!!

If the yellow you are using is really pale, I cannot see how the final effect with any color red island can be Golden Arches. That said, the watercolor-ish stain on the green island francoise47 links to above points out another approach to precluding too harsh a look. I had been trying for the same washed look for accent cabinets in my kitchen, along the lines of the coral-red island in chinkle's finished kitchen. I was unable to figure out quickly whether that effect was achieved with milk paint or a stain or some other way, so I ended up going a different direction. Still, I think a washed-looking finish is a way to introduce some vibrant color while still keeping it soft. I would go with your original vision to the point of painting a large piece of wallboard, cardboard or wood the color you envision for the island, then see how it looks in situ and adjust as needed. Even with the whitewashed brick, the natural cedar color for shutters and flower boxes does not work with the roof. The fact that your upper windows are relatively wide balances out the distance. If you plan to add a portico/porch though, design that roof to break up the distance. Or, can you add a window upstairs? Please don't mortar wash the exterior brick like the fireplace. It wouldn't be a good look I think. If you are set on changing the color, there are other products that are more subtle and natural looking. My opinion only, of course I've seen what a difference the trim/siding colors can make in the appearance of stone or brick (and roof) , by pulling out one shade and diminishing another. That is why I agree that a dark, gray-brown or bronzish shade on the battens and trim will both look good and should be your first step. Remember that your roof will need to be replaced at some point; changing the brick is permanent.

New Venetian Gold. It took 2.5 hours to pick it out because I wanted more depth.

It does look better in person. My backsplash is Antique Crema with Copper inserts. The Pittsfield Buff will probably look fine, I'm overwhelmed at how much more this process is than I thought. Mine's just a minor remodel too, how sad.

LOL Andrea! After I replied to you I saw your post on the "other' Pittsfield Buff, Monroe Bisque thread! Anyway, I think you "may" be getting cold feet as the push for a decision nears. We've all been there, LOL! It took me 4 months AFTER my kitchen remodel to pick a paint color for the walls! Everything seemed easy up until that point! Weird! Soooo, paint a swatch or poster board of the pittsfield buff and lay the 2 samples you have of the granite and backsplash on it. Let it sit there for a few days so you see it in ALL lighting situations. It might grow on you OR you might get a visceral reaction right away that it is NOT for you. Take a picture of the stones on the PB poster board and post for all of us to see! FWIW this my FR in Tobacco Road. I have the red and green in the window fabric and the caramel on the sectional.

Great idea! That is what I will do. I'm going to BM on Monday to look at the Aura colors, they said they can do Pittsfield Buff. I have a week until demo.
BTW, my mom and I are doing the living room panels just like you suggested with the gold and black stripe. Those won't be ready until late Feb but I will post pics of those too!!

My head is spinning. Susan's Pittsfield Buff looks amazing in her kitchen. Kmc's Tobacco Road looks amazing in hers. I don't know what to tell you, except, that lighting and the other factors in the room can subtly change how much you like a color in your own home.

That is true and I have the ever so lovely fluorescent light that gives off soft warm light. It truly is a masterpiece, yeah right. Unfortunately we are not getting rid of it. :(
I was able to get a new cover so it doesn't look so industrial. I'm afraid it is going to make things look more yellow.

In addition to what kcmg said, be sure you prop the painted poster board up against the wall and lay the granite next to it to look at it that way as well. The colors look so much different when they are vertical and not horizontal with the light shining directly on them! Be sure to look at it with your flourescent light. Good luck.

One other thought: It may be that the colors are so close or one has a different undertone to it. Some have more green while others have an orange or yellow or brown undertone. If you are going to the trouble to paint posterboard, then get a few and paint them in the different colors under condideration. Write the name of the color on the opposite side so you remember. You will be amazed at how they read differently and "might" make the decision easier by process of elimination. Throw Waterbury Cream in there too!

Okay I painted the poster board Pittsfield Buff. I looked at some of the colors that were recommended to me before and still Pittsfield Buff worked the best with the various elements. In fact Blair Gold matched the gold in my valances perfectly so I figured the Pittsfield Buff wouldn't clash with them. Here are the many pictures I took. Please bear with the pics, I took pictures at different areas to give an idea of what it is going to look like. Please let me know if you think I made the correct choice.

I had the flash on for the 3rd picture and it off for the 4th picture. It was wierd how yellow it looks but it is probably due to the lovely lighting in my kitchen.

....and i see you were so excited that you didn't wait for the paint to dry! ;)LOL! I understand the problem with the flash. The last picture I think really shows what the PB will look like. That doesn't seem so washed out. And I think it looks nice. The most important thing I picked up on is...YOU feel more validated in your choice, and that's good!

I was so excited until I got wet paint on the couch. I think it looks nice but I want to see it in the daylight. It was also recommended to look at Wilmington Tan. I didn't see it in my "What to paint my kitchen" thread from Oct. so I don't know if I even looked at that one. I know I took every color on there that was recommended to me except black and the Pittsfield Buff was the only one that tied everything together. We have two rooms that are a tan color and I don't know how Wilmington Tan compares with those and if it would be too tan. The only bold room left downstairs is going to be my dining room.

Well, you might as well try it! I keep bouncing back and forth between yours and caroleoh's thread, LOL! As I mentioned to one of you before, can't remember who, after awhile they are sooo close, it's hard to see the difference unless they are right next to one another. That's why I suggested painting several choices on different poster boards. What is the color of the other "tan " rooms above?

They are all Behr paints. The first one is Pebble Path, then Harvest Brown, then Gobi Dessert.

Here are the three colors on the demo wall and posterboard. I'm still leaning toward the Pittsfield. I like the buttery cream and it brings out the gold in my fabric. I'm using that gold to make panels for the living room. I think Powell is a little too cool especially next to the Navajo White and the Wilmington Tan may be a bit dark to use in the living room and kitchen.

We may be done with the colors, one of the posterboards fell off the fireplace and hit our dog. My husband said he has never seen BJ so scared.

I'm really liking the WT in your house also if it's not too dark. In the picture of the fireplace, which color is in the middle? It looks too pinky, but it could just be the way the light is shining there. The one on the right looks good and I'm guessing the one on the left is WT?

It is Powell Buff, I don't like it at all with the colors we are going to have and it just about gave my dog a heart attack when it hit him on the head while he was sleeping. It is too cool and looks terrible up against the Navajo White that is in the foyer. All of the walls connect together so I have to be very careful as was discussed in my Oct thread when I was asking for help with the kitchen color.

Pittsfield Buff and Wilmington Tan are the other two colors. Wilmington Tan is okay, my husband and I don't like how dark it is. I think it may be due to the fact it is pretty dark in there right now with the Pepper Spice and Tate Olive. We both are wanting something to brighten up the room.

CaroleOh suggested I get Nomadic Desert and Kilim Beige to look at also. This is really stressing me out. So far my husband and I really like the buttery creamy color of the Pittsfield Buff. I'm going to see what those two SW colors look like and then we are going to make a decision.

Our demo starts in a week and I'm getting very stressed out because we have to basically move out of our kitchen and then I have to move everything for the painter. I should have just left the spec kitchen alone.

I went to the paint store today and Pittsfield Buff is the color we are going with in the Aura paint. I'm so excited and relieved that I am done with colors. I'll post pics when I'm done with the remodel and repainting. Thank you all, you guys ROCK!!
