Oil cleaning Method for face cleaning..anyone tried

I just read about this and decided to try it. I have VERY OILY skin, and thought I'd give it a try. Basic science (I remember from biology...hey I was amazed I reembembered anything from college biology). My skin felt so good afterwards, AND they next morning was NOT oily feeling, I was amazed. The next morning I washed with my usual cetiphil, and it felt so dry and tight...so I think I may stick to it. I found the castor oil at Wal-mart, and the sunflower oil (I could have used EVOO, but thought I'd try sunflower as it mentioned it was better for "older" skin) at Cub. I figured if it didn't work I'd use the sunflower oil for cooking!!

I once had a patient who was in her 80's, who cleansed and conditioned her skin with mayonnaise morning and night, every day, and had done it for years - she had beautiful, flawless clear skin. I've never tried it, but it worked for her!

I always had oily skin, I think it keeps me from getting wrinkles now that I'm 57. I finally appreciate it. When I was a teenager I washed my face with Noxzema skin cream and found out I was allergic to it. My own Grandmother used to rub Crisco on her face and hands. She always looked old to me.

Oil Cleansing Method, or OCM When cleansing and moisturizing your skin, it is imperative that you keep in mind that oil disolves oil. Do not be afraid of applying oil to your face. Oil, alone, will not cause you blemishes. Pimples, cysts, zits, blackheads and whiteheads are a result of several different factors including hormones, bacteria, dead skin cells and the buildup of these factors. Your skin naturally produces oil because it needs it. It is not a malicious force to be reckoned with, it is there for the benefit of your skin. It is naturally occurring. Oil helps lubricate, heal, protect, and moisturize your skin so that it may function properly. Properly functioning skin is beautiful, clear, and glowing. While I'm talking about the benefits of oil applied externally, I'd like to mention how important it is to moisturize from the inside as well. WATER! Drink no less than 8 glasses of water a day. If your skin has issues with blemishes, drink up! Water will help release and remove the toxins from within, leaving behind glowing, dewey, toned skin. Carry a bottle of water around with you throughout the day so water is always available. Now, to the point of this article. Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) is used for moisture, while Castor Oil (CO) is used for cleansing. Castor Oil tends to be a bit on the thick side, so a mix of the two (EVOO/CO) is frequently used. This allows for the Castor Oil to really sink into the pores and draw out the dirt and grime to the surface. You can vary this ratio to match your skins needs. More EVOO for moisture or more CO for cleansing (25/75 EVOO/CO for Oily skin, or 75/25 EVOO/CO for dry skin). EVOO is incredibly high in antioxidants, while CO is excellent for drawing and healing. CO has been the focus of many books and medical discussion because of its seemingly "magical" healing properties. It only makes sense (after a bit of research) that one would use CO on their face to help treat blemishes and acne, or simply to make their skin look and feel better. As quoted in The Oil That Heals by Dr. McGarey, a country doctor (unknown?) states, "Castor oil will leave the body in better condition than it found it." The Routine: Massage a substantial amount (the cup of your palm, while hand is held open) of EVOO/CO into your face and neck. This is to be done over makeup or any visible dirt. Take this time to give yourself a facial massage. Really work the oil into your skin. Take your time, breathe deeply, and relax. Sit down to do this if it helps. You, of course, do not have to sit and relax, but keep in mind that stress isn't good for your skin and you should take any moment you can to destress and let tension float away. Take a washcloth, terry cloth or flannel preferred, and soak it in steamy hot water. Wring it out and drape it over your face. What we are doing is steaming your face as an esthetician would, but without the steam machine. You want to open your pores. This helps release any impurities from deep within your pores. As the washcloth begins to cool, gently wipe the oil and dirt away. This will also help remove any dead skin cells that are stubbornly clinging on. Rinse the washcloth out in hot water and wipe away any remaining impurities. You may have to do this two or three times more to remove any remaining dirt and oil residue, but it will come off leaving your skin with a beautiful, healthy glow. No additional cleansing is necessary. After you have rinsed well, you can either splash your face with cool water to help tone and close your pores, or if your face feels tight, you can moisturize. If your skin feels tight, take a tiny drop of your EVOO/CO, rub it between your clean, damp palms and pat it into your damp skin. Massage any oil residue into your skin so there is no film of oil left sitting on the surface. Being prone to breakouts, myself, I've found that this is perhaps the most important step.

update: We still aren't 100% shampoo free. We cut down to only washing every other day, and then substituting every other of those with baking soda. I've gotten to where I look forward to a fully baking soda cleansing routine. I certainly like it even better than days when I shampoo (the one which was chemical free). We have finally run out of the chemical free shampoo and now it is time to be 100%. My son's hair was crazy oily all the time (no matter what type of shampoo or how often he cleaned it). He'd get out of the shower and it'd still look greasy?! Going this route has sent him back to the non-greasy days, AND his face acne has reduced. His hair is so soft. He loves it. Me? I love it. I feel like my hair so much less stressed. And people keep offering compliments without my asking. People who have no reason to talk to me about my hair, e.g. someone standing behind me in church and we've never talked about hair? So I think that's pretty unbiased. No one knows in real life knows we've done, except on this forum (and anyone reading it). When it gets to the point someone says, I really love how great your hair looks! What's your secret? Then I'll know I have "arrived". It's getting there. I appreciate the feedback y'all gave me before trying it. What was really cool? It was super easy to get through camping this weekend. That cold oil method is something I saw on America's Test Kitchen, and I tried it, but wasn't particularly impressed. The fries weren't awful, and weren't particularly good either, but I didn't use frozen fries, so maybe that was a problem. Like others, I do not generally use frozen fries, I slice and soak, then dry, fresh potatoes. I haven't gotten that "4th of July" effect either, although if I dump a bunch in at once I can get a pretty good boil-up. I fry twice, that makes them nice and crispy. I do freeze potatoes for fries occasionally, when I have a huge excess in the garden. I used to freeze them every year so the girls had frozen fries as a snack they could just put in the oven after school, but now I don't expend freezer space since I have no teenagers at home. Here few McDonald's workers are black or Hispanic, but the McDonald's nearest us is next to the college campus and they have a rotating door of mostly bleary eyed, hung over, uncaring, gum popping and rude college aged Caucasian females who can never get an order right and heaven forbid you might actually order coffee, you'll get the evil eye in spades AND cold coffee. Whatever, I seldom go there, except for coffee and occasionally to feed the dog, and I've learned to go inside, not through the drive through. That way when the coffee is cold, I hand it right back to them. By the way, their new muffins? They are truly awful, bad enough that I have not been inclined to give them a second chance. Annie

Absolutley oil is best for cleansing. Like you said, it is basic science.

DHC makes a cleansing oil that totally removes make-up and rinses clean. I highly recommend it. It never leaves your face greasy.

My mother uses olive oil for her face and I know others who do too. I use it around my eyes on days when I am not going to be wearing make-up. It does not look or feel greasy once it "sinks in".

BTW the facial soap DHC makes is fabulous too. It you have a problem with dry hands in the winter it works well.

i have actually had samples of the DHC cleansing oil, don't remember how or where i got them. i have very oily skin, which i am sure in 10-20 yrs i'll be thankful for lol. i can't get myself to use oil to cleanse yet thou a few yrs ago i did start using Philosophy skin products that at first seemed too counter-intuitive. i am hooked on their Purity cleanser, like cetafil, even thou it is a creamy cleanser it melts makeup and dirt right off. i swear it has something to do w/ my long thick eyelashes, never had that before lol. in the winter i also use their Hope in a Jar moisturizer, that has taken me awhile to get used to putting cream on my oily skin lol. ~ liz

Crisco! I use to use it all the time and I had oily skin.Started out of not having anything to clean my face with.LOL It worked really well and left my skin soft and not oily at all.
I now use the Serious Skin Care products (HSN) with olive oil.LOVE them!

I actually bought some of the DHC cleasing oil after using a sample but when it came in the mail, there were NO instructions. I think you are supposed to use it, rinse and then use soap? I don't know so I don't use it very often because I forget. I do think it's a great idea if you use it.

I ordered my samples. I'm 56 and have terribly oily skin. Makes me crazy. I'll be on the lookout for castor oil as well.

Magic_az, here is their skin care routine recommendation in the link. I do not always use soap after rinsing the remover.

You will notice a difference in your skin almost immediately. After a while your friends will notice too. They also make a line for teenagers who are battling acne but it can also be used by those who are experiencing menopausal skin breakouts.

*I see that now they are charging a $2.00 handling fee for receiving the first catalog with four free samples and a $5.00 gift certificate. It used to be no charge when I started with them.

Every so often they do run a nice sale and they always have volume discounts and frequent shopper discounts. I have recommended DHC to friends and we combine our orders to receive the volume discount.

I've used EVOO for years. No chemicals that I can't pronounce in it. I figure that if I can drink it, it's good enough to remove my eye makeup. Oh, and it's been around for several millenia. Just remember that your body absorbs everything you put on your skin. Do you REALLY want all those unknown chemicals that are in makeup removers, lotions, etc. absorbed into your body?

You really don't need to spend all that extra money on EVOO. For removing make-up any regular olive oil will do just fine and work the same. EVOO is preferred in food preparation because it does not have a trace of bitterness in the taste. Your face won't know the difference.
