Hi Jillsp- I think you should be fine. Yes, the common rule of thumb is to determine the diameter or width of the table top and select a lighting piece that is half of that measurement (the diameter of the table top). Your fixture size should not be determined by the size of the room at all, but the size of the table it is over. If your chandelier is not too heavy, my advice is to have someone hold the light over the table while you take a step back and simply use your own judgment and decide if you like the way it looks. There are two schools of thought here because in general, design is about personal taste and opinion.

Hi Hannah! First of all, thanks for that drawing--helps me visualize the situation. We actually have recommendations for how to hang 2 chandeliers over a long table. The best way to do it is to imagine cutting the table in half and then centering each of the chandeliers over their half of the table. Your chandelier sizes will work, too, based on our sizing recommendations. Let me know if you have any questions!

It depends how high you are planning to hang the chandelier. The standard is 66" from the floor and in that height you want to make sure the chandelier is not too close to the diners that seat at the head of the table. I would recommend to leave around 22"-23" from the edge of the table to the chandelier from each side unless you are planning to hang the much higher as shown in the picture above.
