SS sink: expensive vs. not so -- is that worth the difference?

I am trying to choose the best SS sink for our kitchen.

While Franke sinks are gourgeous, are less expensive just as good?

What would I get with the more expensive one?

I would so much appreciate your thoughts on this!

I guess it depends. Does Franke have sinks that you like that have a configuration that you haven't found anywhere else?

If you're going for good SS sink and don't care if it has "name appeal", I suggest what many of has on the Forum have gotten...a Ticor SS sink from Galaxy Tool Supply. Most, if not all, of their sinks are 16 gauge SS and include a SS rinse sink grid and strainer for each bowl.

Thank you, Buehl, much appreciate the information!

And, based on your lead, I have just selected there three sinks (2 for half-baths and 1 for the laundry room).

Regarding Franke, yes, they do have the shapes and sizes that I like. A

nd I also thought the european style sinks (the ones with the opening in the corner) may give me much more space in the cabinet underneath -- any one with any experience there?

We have Teflon lined pots and pans and never put them in the dishwasher because it destroys the non-stick properties, especially in the frying pans. I know for sure this happens because it has happened to us, even with expensive Cuisenart sets. We just wash them immedialty after the meal. The rest goes into the dishwasher. Also we wash all good sharp cutlery by hand. We have an old Maytag heated dry washer and use heated wash and dry all the time. To the poster that said they never use the heated dry on their dishwasher: when you set to sanitize the heater comes on to raise the temperature of the wash water sufficiently to do this. Not sure if it is safe to put plastic ware too close to the heating element when water is present. Do you know?

Just an additional suggestion. One thing I like about your photo of the sink with what is called the "zero radius corners" is the drain location which is not directly in the center; that is called an "offset drain". An offset drain is located either toward the rear center, or rear right. The advantage is that you can set pans down without covering the drain. While an offset drain seems a minor point, it is actually very useful. You can find offset drains in various-shaped sinks; it is not just found in zero radius sinks. So if you prefer the rectangular bowl with the more rounded corners, you might search for one with an offset drain. Blanco has several (if you have the space, the BlancoPerforma Super Single sink is a nice shape and size). Here is a link that might be useful: BlancoPerforma Super Single SS Sink

kitchendreaming, there have been threads on this - I started one about hearing the "white silgranit looks plastic-y" - you can search that thread, as initially I wanted the white one too. I believe the overall consensus was it will be ok if it is really the one you want - you can scrub it - (I think at least a couple folks on here have one), but if any will show anything, the white one would - as white anything of course would show crud, stains, etc. more than a color would. Make sure you see them in person. I wasn't into brown at the start, but now I think that one will probably work best in my case - good luck, and I'm sure we will love our sinks!

Charlikin, I looked a little further and found a couple of other suggestions: Kindred's granite composite - 25-3/4"L x 22-3/16"W x 9-1/8"D Â Scroll down to the single bowls Â They come in graphite, polar white and ivory. Astracast's granite composite - 25"L x 22"W x 8"D Â Astracast's composite granite Â They come in alpine white, sahara stone and metallic black Are these too wide for your counters? I had a problem finding the right sink, too. I have a 29" sink base and couldn't find anything that fit my specifications. For some reason they seem to make sinks really big or really small. Nothing in between. I went back and forth between granite composite and stainless. Then I ended up getting the Blanco Silgranit (511-712) 24" x 20 13/16" x 10". Yeah, it's deep and I'm getting used to the extra reach. But it certainly is beautiful! I was able to have my existing cabinets bumped out to accomodate the 20 13/16" width. I didn't want my fauct to be squished against the backsplash. I'm not trying to talk you into anything. Just wanted to let you know that I feel your pain. :-) So to answer the question that you actually asked about the stainless sinks, I agree with Weissman. "You really won't notice the nickel content or most likely the gauge either. Pick a sink because you like a look and the price." I don't think you could go wrong with Blanco or Elkay. They're both reputable names. HTH!

In functional terms, I don't think there's that much difference.

But I see nothing wrong with spending money on something just because its beautiful. If it's not a budget buster, and will give you pleasure for a very long time, well... sounds like a good investment to me!

If you have never had a sink with a rear/corner drain, you are in for a treat. Lots more work room in the sink and surprising room in the cabinet below.

Our clean-up sinks is an Amerisink. It is enormous- about 39" across- two bowls and I can wash my biggest pans in the larger- still lots of room in the smaller bowl. It cost me under $300, including shipping. Prep sink is a 16" Franke ($125 on eBay) with a rear drain- good sink but no discernable difference between it and the 'no name' sink.

MIL recently replaced her regular sink- double-bowl cast iron, drains smack in the middle, with the SAME SINK. I put on my Happy Face when I do KP over there, all the time thinking, "Why would anyone want the hole in the middle of the sink?"

I was at a granite showroom yesterday and they had Franke sinks undermounted as well as some they sell for 250.00 and that they buy in large lots, which she said go into the Condos they do for builders. The biggest difference was in the sound. Tap the inside side of the Franke and it was sound deadened. Tap the inner side of the other sink and it sounded tinny and cheap. Both were the same gauge ss, I think it was 18g. Has anyone tried this with the Tricor?
