It's impossible to know for sure without pics of your situation, but it's probably entirely possible to put in a light where your husband thinks it isn't; he just hasn't figured out how yet. What kind of light fixture do you hope to use?

In tight situations it is sometimes possible to use an 'old work' box that will mount from the kitchen side to the drywall ceiling. These boxes have ears that swing out to catch the drywall from the backside and hold the box in place. Screws inside the box tighten the ears up. In such a situation, romex wire can be run into the box before installation leaving a long tail of wire that is then threaded through the hole in the ceiling and aimed nto the attic where there WILL be enough room to make the needed connections to power, switching, etc.

Thanks. I showed the replies to my husband but he says that the problem is the space in the attic is the problem. There's not enough room for him to physically fit in order to make the electric connections. I was wondering if there was any kind of casing which could be mounted on the ceiling so that the electric wires could run from the light fixture in the back entry to the area over the sink. It's a straight run of about 6 feet.

Re-read the messages above. It is not necessary for him to "physically fit" into the area to make the connections. The connnections are made from below. If he can get into the attic, he can almost certainly perform the installation.

Please forgive me for saying so, but it sounds to me as if you husband is not (yet) sufficiently knowledgable about electrical work to do this job. I recommend that he read Wiring Simplified (available at bookstores and the electrical department of Home Depot stores). That will help you and him decide whether he should tackle this job, or you should engage a professional instead.

He shouldn't have to fit in that area of the attic. Rather, he can cut the large hole in the ceiling over the sink to accommodate the box (or recessed fixture) and then all he needs to do from the attic is to hit that big hole in the ceiling with a piece of romex. Then he can pull that piece of romex down into the kitchen, feed the end into the junction box and then shove the box (or recessed fixture, after making the connections) up into its hole. It should be possible to make all the connections from below.

Thanks. But how can he make the connections from below when all the electric stuff is in the attic. He installed my pendants over the breakfast bar, He cut holes in the ceiling, put in the boxes, but then he had to go into the attic to get the wires to attach to the box. He has to get the electic connection from the wires which are in the attic. I don't have any light fixtures over the sink so he has to run the wires. Does that make any sense?

Sorry for sounding like I don't know what I am talking about but I don't. LOL

Keep in mind that we don't know where the switch will be, or where he's drawing power from. The only connections we can mentally locate from your description so far are the ones right at the fixture. THOSE are or can be made from below. Any other connections he might need to make, such as to a switch on the wall, or a junction box elsewhere in the attic, we can't guess much about.
