I splurged!

I splurged! I had a big breakfast. Two fried eggs over easy, buttered toast, a whole red grapefruit and now a really big cup of hot tea, no sugar but sweet and low in it. It was really good! It is a bit chilly here in central Indiana, but I saw no new snow. Some parts of Indiana does have fresh snow. Anyone out there had their breakfast?

My bread just beeped in the machine and the whole place smells like fresh bread!

Might be fresh bread and homemade jam....

I had a handful of potato chips and a handful of popcorn. Oh, and a coke. There is a breakfast buffet in town, and lasts until 10. If I don't have to go pick up dog food today, I may
go...and let that suffice for my main meal. They have everything you can think of on the buffet...including pork chops and chicken breast strips and waffles, omelets, and eggs cooked to order. I usually just eat pork chops, hash browns and a biscuit and gravy and strawberries for dessert.

Janieful: "The advanced toilet makes sense to me - at least much more than a separate bidet would. I have never used either, but bidets take up so much space. The one in all model is much more practical." The advanced toilet seats are not, strictly speaking, direct replacements for bidets, though one generic term for advanced toilet seats is "bidet seat." The first and foremost function of an advanced toilet seat is water washing a bit further to the rear than a bidet cleanses. Cleansing the anus with water is far superior to wiping (and spreading) with dry paper. Most current models of advanced toilet seat have a second washing function called "feminine cleaning," or a variant thereof, which has many similarities to the function of a bidet. As you may guess, that function directs the water somewhat further forward than the primary function does. However, in "real" bidets, the water comes from the front, whereas in advanced toilet seats, the water approaches from the rear, so there is a difference. The various brands of advanced toilet seats approach these functions in different manners. Inax, which invented the advanced toilet seat category, determined that the optimal angle of incidence of the spray on the anus should be 70 degrees from horizontal or, in other words, just 20 degrees from vertical. The Inax advanced toilet seats therefore have spray wands for posterior cleansing that extend out fairly far, so that the spray can be more nearly vertical. Toto, the biggest player in the market, was obsessed by the spectre of "backwash," the (small proportion of the) water that rebounds off the user's posterior, and accordingly Toto Washlets are designed to spray water at the anus at 43 degrees from horizontal, which reduces (but does not not eliminate) the amount of backwash that hits the spray wand. But spray directed at Toto's 43 degree angle does not wash as effectively as the 70 degree spray of the Inax models does. Inax addresses the backwash matter with an aggressive self-cleaning cycle for the spray wands, executed both before and after each use. As to the feminine function, Toto can get by with a single wand for both posterior and feminine cleansing, with two spray nozzles in the single wand, because the 43 degree spray angle for the posterior wash already is so shallow. Inax has to use a separate dedicated spray wand for feminine cleansing, because the wand that Inax uses for posterior cleansing would not be positioned well for the feminine cleansing function. But, whether or not you use the toilet seat for bidet-like functions, water-assisted posterior cleansing is a huge step up from dry wiping after a bowel movement. There probably is no way to upgrade your bathroom more effectively than to replace a passive toilet seat with an advanced toilet seat.

I splurged and ordered new windows for my house

Around 1980 we replaced aluminum frame windows and had insulation blown into the *totally-insulation-free* walls of our 1950's brick ranch home. It made a huge difference in our comfort. It also meant my DH wasn't struggling with storm windows twice a year. However...when we listed the house in 1999, our Realtor said this wasn't a selling point -- that most buyers just saw 'windows' -- every house has 'em. At least WE appreciated the change for many years. We also replaced two picture windows then. One in the dining room became an add-on bay with window seat. One became a slider in the kitchen eating area. We replaced the former back door in the back hallway with a small window. Our current home (2001) has Pella Low-E architectural series casements and french doors. (And insulation!) Each casement has two fasteners that hook into the casement high and low, pulling it tight within the frame when you engage the latch. The french doors have three-point locks: Top, bottom and a deadbolt at the latch. All of our side and rear glass has between-the-glass shades and muntins. Wide window casings look fine without drapes. I have interior-hung fabric roman shades with blackout linings in bedrooms and master bath. The building review committee in our town demanded that we have simulated true muntin glass all around the house. (The little panes of glass with muntins between that you have to wash one pane at a time.) We got them to compromise. We put those on the front of the house and the 'fake muntins' between the glass everywhere else. If anyone has ever noticed the difference, I don't know about it. This arbitrary spending of other peoples' money by a volunteer committee of busybodies (devoid of legal standing) rankles every time we pay a window washer to do the front windows. (DH can do the outsides of the rest in an hour.) As I recall, we spent $43K on windows for this 2900 sq ft house. About $8K was the overage for the simulated true pane windows demanded by the building review committee. They had also demanded a wood shake roof. Luckily, our closest neighbors had been permitted to replace asphalt shingles with same a year prior -- so we were spared that initial and ongoing expense.

Wolf 48 inch dual fuel range- should I splurge?

I really like the Wolf range but never even looked at ranges at all before this week because of price/oven issue. However, that was before I found this deal which put it in my upper price range. So I'm trying to research the range and look at it realistically vs getting swayed just by the price. If I didn't get the range, I would be buying the Kenmore double convection oven with Wolf 5 burner gas cooktop. Not sure if Wolf range ovens would be better or not. I do LOVE the cooktop part of the range and the "wow" factor however just concerned with oven heights. However, I would have the steam oven at perfect level above the warming drawer so that may offset the lower ovens on range. I live in southern TN. Not that I want this to influence my decision, but houses in my neighborhood (range from 500k-3 Million) do have majority high end appliances. So even though we don't plan on selling , I believe the Wolf range would fit the house better... However, for me personally, I would be happy with both scenarios. Thanks for all the help/input!!

1) Pet. A lot depends on what you consider a "splurge". I consider it something you do or have that you don't really need to survive. Something you could easily get along without. I don't consider vet bills a splurge, I consider them required for responsible pet ownership, however pet ownership is a splurge. 2) DSL internet. Although many would argue they couldn't live without the internet, I'd suggest they could. There's free internet available but I do enough research that I recover the cost of a lot of my internet cost so the splurge isn't that great. 3) Bottled water and tea. I have problems with this one, since technically it's a "splurge", but OTOH, I generally save way more by carrying it with me so I don't splurge on beverages when I'm out and about. So 10ÃÂ¢ a bottle for spring water often saves more than the cost. That wouldn't really be a splurge. Probably should be considered an investment yielding dividends! Given that a couple purchases, sometimes even one purchased beverage somewhere can offset a month's worth of spring water or more. On second thought, I'm striking that one. That *is* a money saver. 3) Occasional meal out. I don't do the fancy meals out. $10 is usually going to include meal (unless I make the 5 disappointments mistake! LOL) and tip since I often forgo a fountain beverage unless it's at the buffet where I get coffee, tea, milk and pop or other drinks all for one price should I so choose. Yeah, that's more of a splurge by definition than the spring water. When it comes down to it, cars, even electricity, computers, cell phones, TVs, ipods, etc, etc are all splurges for most people. Hiring people to do things is usually a splurge too.

I'm drinking a hot cocoa, that's my normal winter breakfast on a workday. After spring arrives I'll switch to oatmeal. There's a diet pepsi waiting for me to finish the cocoa. LOL

Marilyn, that breakfast buffet sounds WONDERFUL. I just may have to fix breakfast for supper tonight! I'll be thinking about this all day ... mmmmmm

I LOVE to eat breakfast out, but it is more and more difficult for Hubs to get out, so we eat at home. Today, because I have an early eye Dr. appt. I had a piece of toast with peanut butter and a glass of milk. He likes to crumble up hard oatmeal cookies and put milk on it and eat like cereal. It doesn't appeal to me, but what ever floats his boat....or cookies. LOL Dottie

I had 2 cups of coffee already. I'm boiling 2 eggs. And more coffee. DH hates coffee, asked for a cup of tea.

I'm on my way to a cake tasting to order a cake for my son and future DIL's engagement party. The tasting will be my breakfast :)

Oh yeah. My neighbor, Jennifer, wanted to eat in town. So I called Lisa and Dorothy and we all met at the local cafÃ©. I had 2 eggs, country sausage and toast. A few cups of coffee. The company was the best part. Lots of laughter.

I had toast - my mom's homemade whole wheat bread. It was really good! My grandmother used to make it when I was little, but I didn't like the "brown" then. Luckily, she also made fresh white bread every week. My grandfather was very spoiled - no store-bought bread for him. I guess I should try to learn how to make it myself since I'll be 57 next month.

picked up a 3 piece mini Chik Filet & their granola yogurt for breakfast. i am out of my usual Jimmy Dean Low-Fat turkey breakfast sandwich's and fighting bronchitus so i need to eat. getting panera for lunch... ~ liz

Oh, just my usual home made muesli mix. I take it with me, when traveling. Just put a daily portion per ziplok baggy. :)
Then, all I need to add is milk.

At first I wanted to go to Marilyn_Sues house, then I read Marilyn Cs post!! I've gone to a few breakfast buffets, but never with the menu yours has.......I feel full just reading the choices.

I have a new favorite waffle recipe. It came from one of those Rachael Ray travel shows. These are the lightest waffles I have ever had. They sort of melt on your tongue.

Waffles of Insane Greatness
Recipe courtesy Aretha Frankensteins

3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup whole milk or buttermilk
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 egg
1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Butter and syrup, for serving

In a medium bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; mix well. Add the milk, vegetable oil, egg, sugar and vanilla and mix well. Let the batter sit for 30 minutes.

Preheat a waffle iron. Do not use non-stick spray on the waffle iron; the oil in the batter will allow the waffle to release easily. Follow the directions on your waffle iron to cook the waffles. Serve immediately with butter and syrup.

I made this with buttermilk. One batch makes two grids of 4 waffles.

I can't splurge. Have lost 20 pounds since November and I am not about to regain it back. I had a 100 calorie flat roll (love them) and the bottom scrapings (about a tablespoon) of the jar of peanut butter and jelly. Plus half a grapefruit.
