SORRY ABOUT THE DOUBLE POST. DIDN'T THINK THE FIRST ONE WENT THROUGH.

We had one in 76....Couldn't begin to see where roads were...I don't know how the big truck with blade knew where they were driving. We had drifted snow to the top of our front door.

Denny couldn't get home from work so he and a guy who lived within walking distance took cardboard, layered it several layers thick and cut snowshoes. They taped them and tied them to their feet and walked over the snow.

I didn't see him for a couple of days...

It scared our kids, they thought we'd be trapped in there forever....LOL

I was getting off of about the last plane to land at O'Hare before the shut it down. We barely got to the O'Hare Hilton which is very close. We were snowed in at the hotel for about 3 days. It was a business conference but they had sightseeing stuff scheduled for the people and everything was canceled. I never got out of the hotel.

HA! Oh man do I remember '78. I grew up outside Boston and was about 6 years old I guess. School was closed for what seemed like an eternity for my mom. My dad had one of those forms to pack snow into "bricks" so he built a fort in the front yard and an igloo in the back yard. I remember looking at pictures of the plowed out snow in our driveway and it just dwarfed my sister and I. We were sternly told not to play on high snow piles for fear we would hit a soft spot and get buried.

About a year ago (well yeah.. duh Erin) boston.com had a photo montage of the Blizzard of '78. I was so young, I had NO CLUE the damage it did along the coast and that vehicles had been abandoned on 128 (now I-95 for you non-Massachusetts people).

Crazy, crazy storm. Fun though! :)

hush! we're overjoyed to have a day in the 40's tomorrow, lol..i've had water dripping for 2 weeks so the pipes wouldn't freeze...

I remember the big storm in Decenber 1947. We were moving from the Bronx into an apartment in Westchester County, Our furniture had been in storage. We did get one shipment but the rest did not arrive until days later. A trolly car (anyone remember those) was stuck in front of our apartment for 3 days. We did get a visit from the son of friends of my parents. After that he asked me for a date and we married 4 years later.

I live on the ocean south of Boston and the blizzard of 78 wreaked havoc on our town. One child drowned in her own house.
We have 12 go 15 foot piles of rocks thrown on to the land from the ocean floor. A 40 foot lobster boat crashed through the harbor and landed on the the main street. We had to go and rescue my sister and her four kids and bring them to our house. Her street had 3 to 4 feet of salt water. The amazing part is that I owned a hair salon and, even though the national guard was closing off the town, two clients drove 30 miles and told the national guardsman that they had an emergency. It was getting their hair done, lol.

YaYa you must be one heck of a good hairdresser with a very dedicated clientele. LOL

That storm in '78 hit the midwest before it moved east. In Indiana it started during the night and the wind was blowing so hard it woke me up. It was swirling around the lampposts and blowing so hard that fine snow came through the windows (we were renting while our house was being built). Had to use the patio door because the snow completely blocked the front door. It was really pretty--for a few days.

At that time my parents had retired and moved south and we sent tapes back and forth. I taped the wind blowing from inside--it was that loud! Of course my dad had to call and gloat that it was 75 in Georgia. (No matter what the weather, daddy always said it was 75 haha!)

Our Blizzard was in '77. I live in a lake side city in southern Ontario, close to Buffalo. My city was the hardest hit Canadian city in that blizzard.
