Washing Machine - Electrolux

I've been reading the message board trying to decide what kind of washing machine to buy when we move back to the States. We currently have a Zanussi, which is made by Electrolux. It was new when we moved in and if it's the same as the product made for the US, it has been excellent - reliable, quiet, and good cleaning. The capacity of this model is quite small (as are most w/d here), 2 queen sheets are the largest load (and they require a good shove), but it spins at 1200 rpm and has a cycle we call "boil" ;-) with a temp of 95C (203F) guaranteed to get whites white!

Although I was leaning toward the LG; I would definitely consider the Electrolux if it's the same as the Zanussi, although a model with a larger capacity!

I've always wondered how the Bosch/Miele/Zanussi models in the US compare to the Euopean versions.

I don't have any Electrolux experience but thanks for the link. It will provide interesting reading.

Most machines sold in the USA are larger and use 120 volt electric including those made by Electrolux, so I don't think you will get to have a 203F boil wash with any of them.

Ripleys_mum, I used to boil my whites too but over the years I went from European tiny washer like yours to just sanitazing cycle. My Lg goes to 158 degrees and it still does good job. Sometimes I just add extra time so it tumbles in the hot water longer.
I came across Siemens the other day and the heater goes to 170, maybe you should take a look at that one to get more info or ideas.

I knew when I moved into this house that the 25 year old Kenmores wouldn't last long, so I started researching then. I've read articles, reviews, and I think I've been to every store that sells appliances in a 50 mile radius. I need a top-loader due to space constraints, and I wasn't pleased with any of them. When the washer and dryer died at the end of August, I knew I had to bite the bullet and choose something, and I was going to go with the Maytag Centennial. Until I saw the LG top-loader. I looked up the reviews and they were consistently good, and they had a good repair rating by a leading consumer periodical. My budget isn't unlimited, and they were much more than I wanted to spend, but I haven't regretted it for one minute. I love them. The capacity is amazing, and the clothes come out much cleaner than any other washer I've ever owned. But you are the only one who can decide if a top or front loading machine is best for your needs. There are pros and cons to each. I strongly suggest you measure your available space, and where the necessary connections are as this may limit your choices. And then go to an appliance dealer that carries a broad range of machines and actually touch them, and look at them. Keep in mind some of the suggestions you've received here. Then go and read the reviews. It's important to see them because I found that I would find one that received okay reviews, but then when I saw it, something about it would annoy me - like the 5 settings for cold - cold, tap cold, cool cold, etc.

Buy a used washing machine. Found one on Craigs List in Long Beach for $50, what those wonder washers go for. Have no idea if this is close to you, as I don't live in California. The SmartDrive motor does not itself have a seal in it, but there is a seal on the tub & bearings where the motor's shaft passes through to the basket & agitator. A leak at this seal will dribble water into the motor where it will drip out of the rotor.

Well I might as well tell you in this newer thread on how I like my Electrolux 60 series. My 3rd machine and finally all is well with one exception. The 3rd and current machine (first one damaged at delivery, second one delivered upside down on home depot's truck) has a half inch maybe more gap between the bellow and drum at bottom right abouts. Im concerned and the other two that was not an issue other than what is in parentheses. Electrolux already hates me, and they wanted to send someone here first then if its is the bellow, order it and they come back again. To say the least I have had enough. They are now sending the bellow first. Home Depot approved my review, it was not good to say the least. Am I happy with the machine? Yes, but my review was based on my current bellow issue. If it were not for the bellow issue I would have rated it different, and still given Home Depot its due. If interested go to home depots website and find the washer and organize to newest reviews first...its under whbuild. If you want a photo I can post tomorrow. So far nothing has even appeared to get stuck or go into it. But I find this unacceptable. BTW out of now three machines this machines bellow lines up with the arrow at the top with arrow on metal area. The other two are off, dented one a lot and obvious...second one not as much. What is wrong with the QC there? Furthermore not any of them included the flat wrench which Electrolux sent me. Instructions state that it is included. Without the issue at hand...Fabulous! Shorter cycles than my HE2T, goes into final spin quickly...no vibration or sway! Uses minute amount of water in rinse cycles but does it well...wow. No hate issues that I had with the Kenmore HE2T. Clothes are cleaner than ever. mark

fwiw... siemens = bosch...

the US bosch nexxt machines (non-axxis) are built in the US to Germany specs ... not the same specs used for machines sold in Europe... but specs designed by the bosch/siemens engineers who have designed the European machines in the past...

Whirlpool models are the opposite... designed by US engineers and built in Europe or Mexico (model dependent) to those US designed specs...

at least that was how it worked when I was looking at the two and deciding...

None of the large (27" or 70cm wide) washers sold in the U.S. can reach near-boiling temperatures, because they are all designed to run on low-powered 120v/15A power. There are some smaller 24"/60cm wide machines that can reach near-boiling temps, most notably Asko's 240v washers, but a few other lesser-known brands can too. Fagor sells an 8kg, 240v machine that can reach 195Â°F. AEG (affiliated with Electrolux) used to have some, not sure if they still do. Miele did too, but very recently dropped them. Danby sold a small, inexpensive ($400) washer that could hit 200Â°F even though it ran on 120V power, but they don't make them anymore.

Ya know.. another thing I found about the electrolux dryer.. is that it has an acrylic door window both on the inside and out.

I would be afraid of it scratching eventually

I think here in USA there simply is no need for the boiling hot water washers probably b/c these days we have enzyme detergents and chemicals that clean much better and don't requier the boiling water. I had hard time when first move to USA, I had 220 washer and loved it but it was small so I switched and eventually got used to just 150 degrees.
