Miele??- buy $1500 W4840 vs $1900 W4842?
Comments (30)I own the Miele 4842 and have had it for 8 years now. I really love it. It gets the clothes clean, even if you rarely see water in the drum. Magical. I just recently had a problem with it, for the first time. It threw a fault code F63, which is the water intake unit. It threw the code a year before, but kept working, so I thought this time I should investigate more, before it actually stops working. With help through this forum and youtube, I learned how to take the lid off the machine, open up the water path unit whilst still attached inside my machine. I was told to look for alignment of timing gears. The white gear was not flush with the red gear. So my husband found a tiny washer, placed it under the white gear. We put it back together and tahhhhhh dahhhhhhhhh, it works again. The only cost was time and a washer we already had. Admittedly, without everyone's help here on the forum, who told us what size screwdriver to use and what to look out for, the fix would have taken a longer time for us to figure out. I really like this machine....See MoreHappy Owner of Miele W4840 Washer
Comments (18)ssnetboy26, I know where your coming from, but at the same time it's tough to compare one person's experience and results with how it might play in your own house. Without the internal heater working you might get very different results between: (1) A basement install on a concrete floor where it's positioned right next to a domestic hot water (DHW) heater set to 140F in Florida with average cold water temps of 80F and soft water. vs. (2) A second floor laundry room in an old house without any floor reinforement with 150 ft of uninsulated pipe between the machine and the DHW heater set to 120F in Canada with average cold water temps of 50F and ultra hard water. Even with an internal heater, water chemistry alone could dictate very different experiences. In the end you have to decide if your willing to live with workarounds using a very well made machine with some firmware teething issues. Sometime seems out of whack when a quality manufacturer asks you to pay $1600 to $1800 for a washer with beta firmware. Given the reality of the alternatives it might still be the right choice....See MoreMiele W4840 - Any Repairs on yours
Comments (11)I've run the entire gamut on the hinge and finished with my own modification. The hinge is made of the wrong alloy composition and eventually sags owed to the weight of the door assembly. Its second design flaw is that there is no hinge adjustment. Miele's final solution was a roller latch guide receiver. My solution was to remove the front panel (very heavy); remove the door assembly; there are two holes that the hinge pins engage that are located in the front panel under the hinge, using the lower hinge pin hole scribe an arc at the center of the top hinge pin hole outwards; use a rotary tool or a Dremel to grind the arc along the scribe mark the size of the hinge pin. This will allow you to move the hinge over thereby moving the door latch upwards (compensating for the sagging and stretching of the alloy hinge). Use the proper thread-lock on the two bolts and I also used cyanoacrylate on the inside hinge backing plate to help ensure no moment. You are restricted as to how far you can move the hinge as it hits where the depression of the door stamping indentation meets the bevel and this only allows so much adjustment. I did this modification about nine months into ownership as Miele simply could not fix the issue without it recurring. It's going on five years now, and I've encountered about 1mm sag over that period, but the latch and its receiver are still well within tolerances to where there are no issues. If it again becomes a problem, I am simply going to repeat the arc modification on the lower hinge pin hole or grind away stock from the hinge to allow further adjustment and repaint the hinge. I was going to do a photo essay with instructions, but this is not something that I would encourage people to try. And I was royally pissed-off with Miele at the time....See MoreMiele W4840 rubber seal leaking problem
