Anyone tried the kitchen/bath paint from Lowes?

I'm about to paint my kids' bathroom and the color we like is one of the Valspar Signature colors. I've used Valspar Signature paint in eggshell and liked it, but they were telling me they have a paint specifically designed for kitchens and baths. It looked really shiny, though. The sheen is supposed to be between a satin and semi-gloss. I want the best protection for a bathroom, but I'm not sure I'd like it that shiny. I'm afraid it will look shinier than the cabinets. The sample can we tried just came in satin, and I could live with that amount of shine. If anyone has tried the bathroom paint, how does it look up?

I've just used the semi-gloss as a trim paint in the bath. I liked the coverage and it washes/wipes off really well. Our ceiling in there is beadboard and I used the semi on that, too. Love that tiny bit of extra reflection... so clean looking!

I think you'll be happy w/ the satin.

Thanks, Syllabus. This would be for bathroom walls and it looks about as shiny as a semi-gloss. They call it a sateen finish. Glad to know the semi you used cleans up well. What did you use on your walls?

"I'm a little anal when it comes to hygiene so I would much prefer not to bath my baby in the same place I had just washed a chicken or where dirty dishes were sitting. " I hate to break it to you, but your baby is going to be the dirtiest thing in your house. :) Also, my daughter (now 19 months) still hates any kind of sprayer. A simple cup worked much better. The little plastic tub was a good investment and made baths easy for a couple months. By the time she learned to sit up though, she much preferred to be in the tub.

Hey Bill, I'm totally flattered, thanks! I had my heart set on the pedestal sink for our tiny bathroom, but knew we'd need more room for our schtuff, even with the ginormous medicine cabinet we built in. I was inspired looking at all the cool niches y'all make over on the John Bridge tiling forum. (It turned out much better than it had a right to, considering it was my first job both remodeling and tiling.) You made my day! :-)

Unknown "wood" from an unknown species finished in unknowns chemicals from who knows what kind of process is NOT superior to Euro grade formaldehyde free partical board doors finished with Euro grade paints. Ikea prides themselves on the "greenness" of their cabinets, which meet much stricter Euro standards for VOC emissions. Being "green" might not be an important element of your remodel, but the ideas behind that concept are worth learning about---especially if you can do so and still achieve the end product that you want. There have been way too many scares about Chinese imported toys and foods with dangerous substances in the paint or manufacturing process making it to our shores. THey don't have OSHA there, or the EPA, or the FDA, or pretty much any form of safety oversight for either the workers or the products. You get cheaply produced products for a reason. And, it is a myth that "wood" is superior for cabinet construction. There are a LOT of posts on that subject on the board, and you might want to do a search and educate yourself before buying into that idea.

The Lowes people talked me into the kitchen/bath paint for one bath in our previous house, and I absolutely loathed the result. It was VERY shiny (like shinier than some brands' semigloss) and plasticky-looking, not at all what I would have expected from a "satin" finish. I guess if you don't mind a shiny wall it isn't that bad but I'm an eggshell gal and IMO the semigloss level of shine is for trim, not walls. Every tiny irregularity in the wall surface stuck out like a sore thumb, too. Although some people are completely convinced that you need to have a shiny paint in the bathroom for cleanability, that's not the case anymore - there are plenty of washable paints in lower sheen levels, including flat/matte if that's what you like to look at. I've used a good washable eggshell paint in every other bathroom and kitchen we've painted and it has always been just fine. Had we been painting for ourselves instead of for selling, we would have repainted in a less-shiny paint.

Remember it's a KIDS bathroom. Having walls that are easily scrubbable is a godsend in many kid situations!

I might be the exception but I don't think having a paint with a little gloss to it so it's easier to wipe is bad. I think I got this way though after we moved where we live now years ago because it's a mobile home and is filled with paneling. I was used to wiping paneling and the vinyl wall board so when we went to paint, I wanted to still be able to do that. My entire house is done in either semi or satin, mostly semi and I can still scrub away. I can't tell you how many times I've come in the house in the summer after the kids were already in here to wash their hands and found mud and dirt dried on my walls by the light switch.....lol

I've been there with the muddy hands! : ) But now the kids are older - one just graduated college, one in college and one still in high school. I'm mostly just concerned about the moisture in the bathroom and am wondering if satin is protective enough.

Karo: The walls are tiled on the bottom and wallpaper on the top which is why I just used the paint on the trim and ceiling.

I have also used this in the past in the kitchen as that room is really small and I am a verrrrry messy cook. I like having the semi-gloss finish on the backsplash!

Keep in mind that some colors will stand out from others in a glossy finish. It's just up to you and what you think you and the kids will be comfortable w/.

By the way... in the kitchen I have used a "normal" semi the past couple of times I've painted in there and the Kit/Bath paint was NOT a problem to paint over. One coat of another color covered just fine.
