Can someone show me exposed vs. concealed hinges?

Hi.

We're having white inset cabinets custom made and we have to decide between concealed or exposed hinges? Any pictures?

Personally I dislike the amount of room that concealed hinges take up on the inside and I prefer being able to open the cupboard doors 180 degrees. To me, they look like a big hunk of metal in the way, and my cab doors are open often enough that this is an aesthetic concern. I love the traditional butt hinges on my inset cabinets:

mine are self mortising so no need to cut into the cabinets like with true butt hinges. I think self mortising is the norm now days -that also sets the gap on the one side, so the doors need to be the exact right size our you'll have too big/small a gap on the other side. All of our doors were custom fit to each opening. Not a big deal for us as the tools needed were all on site - just a lot of walking back and forth to the shop. They were a pain to install, more nit-picky to get just right and fidgeting to get the doors to close correctly, but DH and I got it done. Getting the "old farmhouse look" was top priority for me. That meant exposed hinges were a must. And with the other hardware, I think it would have looked like something was missing without the exposed hinges. Now, because of the hinge type, we have to install magnets to keep the doors closed, so that is also an extra cost over most hidden hinges which are designed to hold themselves closed. I've always assumed one of the reasons inset cost more is because it is more work to mount the door/drawers, but not that much. Sounds like this guy does not want to do it, so he's charging you way more than it's really worth because of that. On a side note, we got the seeded glass for the uppers and they should get installed today - we are slowing getting to the finish line.

See if there isn't a local cabinet shop that has a hinge boring machine set up. They could probably drill the holes for concealed cup hinges and provide the hinges fairly reasonably.

We have a similar beam across the LR, which was originally built as two rooms. Most of the seating is on one side of the room, with a chair that always sits under the beam, but when we have a large group, we pull in a couple of extra chairs. No one seems to notice, or to feel uncomfortable sitting under the beam, which is only 82" from the floor. I sat in one of the extra chairs on Sunday, and didn't even think about it. Dedicated practitioners of Feng Shui might not agree, but I wouldn't worry about it.

Any non standard item you're inserting into a mfg process will have impact. They may not see it again this year. Maybe a few new tools/bits, stopping and resetting the fabrication and assembly line for this, restarting for any adds (always). Many shops would just say "no" or "I can't" as you are certainly weeding out the common skills, tools and capabilities. The more I think about these the more labor I see by several trades, installers, painters, etc. This is similar to how government specified products or projects get expensive... they up specify, often at the suggestion of a manufacturer or special interest, until competition falls away and bids get expensive. Happens all the time in the defense industry, school & public housing, all govt construction.

The link above shows you all of my conceiled hinges, which are the majority of what I have. In our state, we have issues with insets if they dont' have significantly adjustable doors (earthquakes and humidity/dryness). In addition, I'm on pilings, so my house moves even more. So that's why I have mostly hidden hinges, I was also worried about them matching my antique pewter knobs with exposed hinges.

I do have one that is exposed. This cabinet is a chalk board and it's only about an inch deep so the hidden hinges wouldn't fit:

I think I'll go with exposed b/c it will match the traditional look of the kitchen.

We have all concealed hinges but they do not take up any room in the cabinets and the doors open 180*. I can't remember what they are called but are the type that will finish closing by themselves if you just give them a push to get started.
