Question for mongo: making closet doors?
Comments (30)mongo, THANKS for replying! Say, weren't you in France just a few months ago? I like your sense of the proper proportions of work and play :) So you say you'd not nail and glue the edging on, but rather just *nail*? And then you say you buy Titebond? I don't get it...did you mean you'd *glue* only? Please explain. Glad to hear that the 1/8" would be tough enough. Hope you see this too...for my wonderful vacation from doing house project today, I got to go to the dentist and have a root canal. A couple of nice mochi are easing the way back from novocaine land. NOT rested, NOT radiant, but determined like a dog with a bone... Here is a link that might be useful: the miyakawa brand, in green tea--makes everything better :)...See MoreX-Post: MidCentury Exterior Doors Options/Pricing
Comments (32)Ok, I'm back, and refocused. Thanks so much for all the advice (and the football tangent. I'm married to a Steelers fan, so Sunday wasn't a happy day -- record-setting blizzard AND Brady getting another ring). Anyway, I did the rough math and decided that by the time I pay my GC to install and painter to paint my doors, they won't be much cheaper than going with a much better product. Plus, my GC doesn't do exterior doors everyday and I know there's a real benefit to having the experts handle install. I've talked to a few local folks and been advised that HomeGuard is a bit of a better value than Provia -- less expensive and still quite good. I've been quoted $4400 to install factory-painted HomeGuard doors - two 36"x80" flush steel doors plus two 16'x80" sidelites with low E and argon glass. Is this a decent price? And a good way to go? Thanks again....See MoreCabinet hinge help for ironing board cabinet turned spice cabinet
Comments (8)The plywood sides you added are going to be in the way of a European hinge working. If you shop online for concealed hinges, every product is going to have a diagram showing the relationship of the door to the cabinet box or faceframe. Not ever one is capable of envisioning the relationships in their head. Using the original hinge is going to save a lot of time and trial & error until you figure it out (or realize it's impossible to do). Might help to see the door, see the edge detail, see how it fits the opening. Casey...See MoreFlush drywall with kitchen millwork
Comments (14)If you are in Los Angeles I can recommend 2 contractors that are detail and customer oriented! The fact that you are asking these questions here, make it look like there is no one with experience and/or control managing this project. There needs to be someone in charge ... and it shouldn't be the builder! Are you willing to tear down walls and rebuild to the correct specifications? You need to have an architect or experienced designer produce detailed plans and specifications for the kitchen and tell the builder to bring in the right trades to make it happen. Tell the builder that "cannot be done" or "we've done it this way for 30 years" are not acceptable answers. Does the builder know you are willing to pay up to get those results? Who is doing the kitchen design and cabinets? If you are buying cabinets that tend to get installed in modern homes with this look, then that cabinet shop should have connections to contractors that are able to put that look together. Or find local real estate listing with similar kitchens and find out who was the architect, designer and builder. Make some calls and get some referrals....See Morejust_janni
