Will this large, RED cabinet work in my space?

I have always loved this cabinet from Crate and Barrel

I never had a spot for it until our leaning wall mirror bit the dust when we were moving it to make place for our Christmas tree. Here's where I would place it in our living room. I marked it with the post it's.

I was worried that it might overwhelm the space, but seeing how DH just installed a new behemoth television, I think it might be okay. The living room isn't large, but it is a two story room with windows at the second level. The room doesn't have much furniture as the sectional takes up most of the space, plus I have kids so less furniture works out to some extent. I could really use the storage of the cabinet though and I love the red color.

There was a tall tree house plant in the corner next to where the cabinet will go. I might put it back there, but I think I would rather replace it with a big fern on a stand as I think tropical plants really don't fit with our decor.

So what do you think about the big red cabinet?

(Please ignore the fact that the fireplace is completely awful. I hope to replace the tile when we redo the kitchen backspash and hopefully I can redo the mantle then too. The carpet is scheduled to be replaced as well. And if you are wondering, the baseboards are being replaced with larger white painted ones...baby steps)

the red in that photo is very blue based-or it reads that way.Yet the perimeter has amber/warmer undertone shades in the stain.The navajoe rug ties the two. Red is great-just get the warmth/coolness the way you want. The floor can tie things together[without that rug-not sure about those shades together.] It boils down to "do you like red?" you can do a bluish gray/green/slate gray/black/cream/fog mist....

I’ve seen 48” tables in the space and they certsinly fit. A bistro size table would look ridiculously small. And be non-functional. There is no traffic that needs to walk through the aisles as people can easily seat themselves all around if need be. If you look at the pictures I posted, there is plenty of room with the tables which are larger than 36”.

Looks okay to me as is ... but it would look even better with a wider top to that cabinet and with the tv lower and w/o anything between the top and tv. You can keep the cabinet you have and still attain the wider look. Cabinet is too nice to just abandon it. IF you agree with those that suggest you need a slightly wider TV stand, simply add a top to it as deep and wide and in any material and finish you choose. [Think fireplace mantel or wide stair step or wide thresh hold board or countertop.]

Awww! Jinx, you just made my day. Given that I have figured out I will be here a while, I am going to hang curtains and do whatever I want! Even if I want tot pain! lol I did not expect to live here for so long. However, it is a great location, safe and not too crazy expensive (although the rent keeps going up) and I got a former maintenace man's unit. He added a nice stove, fridge, tiling around my island, pendants over the island, sconces, a nice sink. The list goes on. So, that is good!

I think the fact that it has a glass front helps to not make it look like another big bulky object in the room, it gives it a little more lightness. Colorwise it brightens up the space.

It seems like a pretty high ceiling in proportion to the space. I not only like it there, I think you may NEED it there. : )

Can't tell about fit from the pic, but that piece of furniture is gorgeous! I can see why you'd want to find a place for it!

I'm with mtnrd - the wall NEED's it there. Love the color - not too red. And YES to the tall baseboards. Baby steps are nice when you have a plan - sounds like you do.

Olives om - thanks for posting that pic. I think I have a space for that cabinet in one of my rooms as well. I could not find it on crate and barrel website. Do you know what it is called? Or can you post a link?

I think it will look good there. My only suggestion is to get one of those short extension cords that have a slim plug that fits into the wall, and stick the cord under the cabinet. That way, if you ever want to use the outlets behind it you won't have to unload the cabinet & then move it. You'll already have access to power (the cabinet legs are plenty tall & the cord can hide under there, just get a shortish one, 6' or less).

I love that cabinet. Wish I could see what's on the other side of the room to balance it out. Anyway, I had a client order that cabinet a few years ago and while we both loved it, I'll forewarn you that it came with a weird smell. I have lost touch with her so I don't know if the smell went away or not...

Looks like it is 16" depth? Do you have that much room after the sectional?

Wonderful choice! :)

Perhaps add a large colorful artwork over the sectional -- and then add family photos (re-do them into black-and-white) with red mats and black frames and hang them in a vertical row on each side of the cabinet ....

Sue: the other side if the fireplace is a large window. The rest of the room opens into the kitchen/ dining space. Actually, it doesn't really open. It's all one space, the living room is two story whereas the kitchen/ dining has 9 ft ceilings.

(window trim is a work in progress)

GWlolo: I have the space, about 28" in depth past the sectional.

I know you didn't ask..but I am thinking with the large red cupboard, large sectional, large windows, large TV--you may need a larger mantle.

I really like the cabinet and agree with the others who said that you need it there to fill that space. Very pretty!

Arcy: I agree the fireplace looks top heavy now with that stupid tv. I think the fireplace surround needs to be beefier and the mantle needs to be larger as well. The plan is to have the kitchen tile tile done in the spring or summer and at that time I will look into changing the fireplace.

I've also loved the rojo cabinets for years and never had a place for them. I think it will look great!

I love the cabinet but have a serious concern about how it is going to project out in front of the fireplace/tv. I'd get a 16" wide board and stand it up near the fp to simulate the side of the cabinet...see what you think.

My dh and I were in crate and barrel last week and loved the display of the rojo cabinet! I had been looking at the hawthorne media center, and it's similar but black with bun feet (it might be called faulkner....I keep calling it the wrong name!)

I just saw this one in ikea and it reminded me of the rojo as well....definitely not as spectacular, but it had a similar vibe and I think it was cuter in person than in the ikea pic.

I have seen the Hemnes cabinet and agree that it is cuter in person. I do have a Hemnes dresser from 8 years ago and it has lasted through 3 moves.

I still like the Rojo though as it is bigger. All the the review comments on the inside paint finish and the smell concern me though.

I think it'll look great. It looks like a very pretty cabinet. I do agree that more prominent fire place trim would help balance the TV and cabinet.
