miele 1113 new user question

Thanks to the advice I received here, I purchased a w1113 (I was able to find a dealer who still had one in stock ). On the whole, I am very pleased, but there are a couple of things I could use some help on. First, does anyone know a way to increase the water level? (I know that the delicate cycle uses more water, but I would like to have more water in a cycle with hot or very hot water-as things stand I'm not getting thorough enough rinsing. The smell of the detergent and/or fabric softener tends to linger ( I am using persil products and never had this issue in my old Neptune. I have tried using white vinegar in the rinse as well but that doesn't seem to solve the problem, and in fact, if I use ONLY vinegar and not FS, then the vinegar odor seems to linger).

My second question concerns the proper amounts of product (detergent, FS, oxyclean, vinegar) to use. I figured that I should try using somewhat less than in my old larger capacity Neptune, but I haven't found the magic amounts yet. I am in NYC, but am not sure if I have hard or soft water. In the Neptune I found that about 1/4c of detergent seemed about right.

Any tips would be most appreciated.

NYC water is VERY soft. That makes it difficult to wash out detergent.

I would cut way back on what you use in the Miele - probably a third of what you use now. Look to see if clothes are clean then adjust up OR down. I sometimes use only a tablespoon or two when I do the wash

others can advise on water levels, but I would cut back on the products used first

As Kerbosch mentions above, NYC water is very soft. Experiment with using less detergent.

I live in Seattle (another place with soft water, but not as soft as NYC) with a model W1918, also a 5Kg capacity machine. I use just under 1/8th cup of Persil Megaperls per load with very good results. (Incidentally, look in the kitchen gadget section of your hardware store for a coffee measuring scoop. Many are 1/8th cup in size and perfect for measuring laundry detergent.)

My washer model was a predecessor to the W1113 and included a bit more flexibility in program choices, so I'm able to increase water levels in some programs. Unfortunately, the model W1113 doesn't include any way for the user to increase water levels. You can, however, choose to add an extra rinse in several of the wash programs by depressing the "Sensative" button. Your owner's manual will indicate in which programs this option is available.

Hope this helps. I'm sure you'll find you get excellent results, once you determine the appropriate amount of detergent to use in each wash load.

Couple more reasons to think it cools down first: 1) Hard to believe that an appliance for home use could dump gallons of near-boiling water into a sink with no warning. That's just asking for trouble. 2) the International Plumbing Code says "Wastewater when discharged into the building drainage system shall be at a temperature not higher than 140°F (60°C). When higher temperatures exist, approved cooling methods shall be provided". On the other hand, I asked the Asko tech at a nearby appliance repair place, and he said it doesn't cool down first, sigh. I'm still not convinced, but nor do I want to ruin a costly new Zoeller pump in short order. And the intermittent 200°F pump isn't an option because it's non-automatic operation only. So my plumber would have to get me a pump suitable for a boiler room, which seems nuts. Maybe I should get the washer first and use it with my existing non-automatic pump, so I can see what really comes out of the drain hose after a boil wash. Meanwhile, I have electrical quote (including other unrelated stuff while they're here), and am waiting for the appliance dealer to furnish an installation quote from their third-party installer. When you're shopping for a second washing machine (never done that before), there's no hurry.

That is the one I'm leaning towards! I have been doing some internet searches on these machines. The 1986, has a soak option too, up to 6 hours. That would be a great feature, a couple hours of soaking would be great for DH clothes. I could work on the machine, as I am fairly mechanical and I always have DH who has a LOT of experience things. It looks like it is a 6kilogram weight capacity too (13.2lbs). I think my 3033 has a 5k weight. But maybe you could clear that up for me. I noted that the depth is 26.5 inches and my 3033 is 22.5 inches. This is larger than my 3033 but not as big as the Little Giant.

Short night sleep! Got to bed at 2am. Up at 7am. Now its lunch time. The old machines are on the lawn. The new machines are in the basement but not hooked up. What was I doing at 7am, waiting for 7:30! to call the electrician to see if I could get my 240 setup for both machines and with an appropriate outlet. Currently the 240 is just a wire that gets hard wired into the dryers. So I need dedicated outlets for each machine. Guess What, I have the electrician getting here after lunch!!! I have taken pics of the plugs and the canadian manual specs for the dryer and the washer, I hope that these manuals are the same as for the American sets. Anyone know? Then after getting the go ahead on the electrician at 7:30 this morning, I called the plumber. Guess What, he is able to come today too and redo some funky plumbing for these machines. He has a hand cart too and helped us get the machines into the basement. He will put in a box for a nice shutoff and the drain. And Guess What! DH is on board with pouring a low platform to set them side by side, so that when the basement gets water on the floor these wont be standing in water!!! We live in an old house. The house is high and dry, but when the eves are overflowing and dumping water directly into the soil next to the foundation it practically runs through the old clay block foundation walls of the basement. We can get some water puddles in areas next to the wall, across from where the set will be, but I want to be sure the feet are never in water. Things are rolling along! I'll link some pics in a bit.

I suggest you read the user manual of the model you plan to buy. I looked at one model with AutoDos and yes you can use your own detergent. It looks like you have to disable the Autodos sensor. Not sure if you have to do this once or before every cycle you run. We have hard water and my 7 year old Miele has a water softener that works very well with finish tabs and rinse aid. I have decreased the rinse aid level I think to 2 (3 is default) and am getting very good results. If your current Miele did not have a water softener you may want to experiment with detergents to see which one works best for you with the water softener if your current detergent does not perform well. I would certainly try the Autodos. Hopefully they give you a sample when you purchase the machine.

I have the W1986 which is 6K, slightly larger than the 1113, older than it, but newer than the 1918. I adjust the detergent to the amount of soil and clothes being washed. If the soil is light(not really visible) I will use 1 teaspoon. If the soil is light but the load is large I will use 2 teaspoons. As the soil gets heavier I increase the amount slightly but only go over 2 tablespoons for one load which is heavily soiled white with ground in dirt(white socks and underwear). My water hardness is currently 16 grains per gallon.

For heavy soiled items I do a prewash with a bit of detergent. The prewash starts with cold water which is gradually heated to warm. You use the heavy soil button to get a prewash.

For very heavy soiled items you can use the extended option. This will increase the time for all parts of the cycle. I would try these ideas before increasing the amount of detergent. The higher the temperature used the more active the detergent becomes. I think the 1113 can heat to 190F or 205F so you may want to use less detergent when using these temperatures. You will find the temperatures listed on the quick start program guide.

Also if you are using PERSIL for whites, it already contains oxygen bleach so adding oxiclean is a no no and will cause excess foaming and poor rinsing.

Vinegar I would only use 1 tablespoon or less.

FS I use less than the lowest amount the manufacturers recommend.
