To Till or Not?
Comments (150)pmbrown, excuse me, but I have to laugh. I must not be growing "well adapted crops"! In my area, we get three weeks of temps over 100F in the summer, with low temps close to 80F. Florida doesn't come close to that. I've never seen a tomato, for example, that is well adapted to those hotter conditions. Peppers, okra, and eggplants tolerate it, with proper irrigation. But it's also not an issue of "fertility". It's an issue of survival. Also, while I mulch deeply, all mulch does is reduce the evaporation off the top of the soil. It doesn't reduce the amount of water a plant draws up and which evaporates from the leaves. Plants are incredibly efficient at pumping water from the deep soil into the atmosphere. You can't stop them from doing that. You can have an infinite amount of mulch and still have the soil rapidly dry out. Back on topic, IMHO, I view tillers as convenient powered hoes. But they just don't do the job I need to get done. For example, they don't contribute to soil improvement at depth, but just make the soil more conducive to germination of seedlings....See MoreGlasses for 'grass stress?'
Comments (16)Nice post HORTSENSE.... It's these "Im going to give you a basic lesson" type posts that can make this place irritating at times. Did the original poster ask...."Does anyone know a way to identify drought stress WITHOUT buying those stress glasses?" No. Perhaps you should have authored your own thread on identifying stress through turgidity that would be helpful to many. Not a condescending post about satellite watering. I gave background info on what those glasses are modeled after. Nothing more. The OP asked if anyone had experience with the glasses. Nothing more. Frankly I'm surprised no one posted something along these lines.... "Hello Dave... Before we discuss the glasses, may I ask you to remove the tag from your seed blend and post a picture of it here? This way we can determine if you have the optimum cultivars for your area and maintenance habits. Also, please give me your Zip Code and answer the following questions. How often and for how long do you water? How often and at what height do you mow? How often and at what NPK ratio do you fertilize? Most importantly.. when was your last soil testing performed? After we get these answers we can discuss the glasses." You guys slay me. What I wouldn't give to see photos of the lawns of half of these so called experts on this site. I'm sure they would be enlightening....See MoreCultivating corn, pancakes and nine dollars

Does spraying with water help frosted plants?
Comments (25)THIS IS THE WORST ADVICE EVER! I hosed everything before sunrise....and they turned into mush. Absolute distraction, unrepairable. And guess what? Everything else in the neighborhood (not hosed down) survived with only minor impact. DO NOT HOSE OFF FROSTED PLANTS! It seems the rapid unfreezing actually does more damage than letting them unfreeze naturally. Back to my graveyard of a garden...never seen such dramatic destruction....See More- 15 years ago
